What kind of graphics style do you enjoy? (poll version 2, more options)

vveaver_onlinevveaver_online Member UncommonPosts: 436

Okay by popular demand here is a revised poll with more options.

And of course its on a game to game basis, I know that, but we are talking about what your natural preference tells you you would enjoy.

**EDIT**

Realistic = game looks like real life does (yes i know no game does that yet, but imagine if it could.)

Stylized realism = It looks like real life but has over-exaggerated features.

Stylized cartoon = Its got a cartoon feel but leans towards stylized realism.

Cartoon = Its fullblown overthetop visually colorful and has left the realm of realism totally.

Please discard my attempt at tying current games to the different styles and imagine a perfect game with all the features and mechanics you want, oh and its fun too!

Im aware that this thread has derailed somewhat due to me being unlcear to begin with. =/

**END EDIT**

I'm still in the All of the Above camp, but could you give examples of those last three?

How would you have all of the above in one game, that would be impossible, if you mean you enjoy all styles in different games, well yeah, me too, who wants limits? But if I ask you what your favorite color is your not gonna tell me you chose the rainbow as a color, cause its not one color, its all colors. Anyways, ahah im gonna give some examples.

Realistic games would be, DAYZ, COD, BF, ESO and the likes.

Stylized realism would be games like "the walking dead", "Borderlands" and games like that.

Stylized cartoon would be games like Team Fortress, WoW, Wildstar, and Pixar looking stuff.

Cartoon would be games like Naruto NinjaStorm, Zelda & most Nintendo produced games.

swtor for example would be a game walking the line between stylized realism and stylized cartoon.

Having hard time distinguishing, what exactly are your criteria? Borderlands are pretty much a cartoon, Old Republic looks like something out of Cartoon Network. Explain please.

There are very few exceptions in gaming industry, where developers tried to go realistic, but a vast majority is just a cartoon. Are you making the line between something that looks like a cartoon for 16yo and a cartoon for 12yo? Then naming is a bit off.

Well for me it depends more on what type of game it is first. Then i choose if i like there type of graphics.

Reason i say this is games like cod or battlefield, etc. needs realistic graphics. But when it comes to mmorpg's i like stylized cartoon or stylized realism or even cartoon if the game mecanics are good. But i think the realistic graphics for mmorpgs does not have its place. It makes game look old fast, i should say real fast.

So where do my colorful, anime high fantasy Korean games fall into that poll? They don't... there's ugly realistic fantasy aka Elder Scrolls, and then there's happy pretty Fantasy that you see in games like FFXIV, Aion, and TERA. WTB another category.... ;(

well most asian styled games would fall into the stylized cartoon category. some of them go stylized realism like age of wushu.

That's important to me. I for one didn't like overall brightness of WAR. If it used TES pallete, it'd have been so much better. Meh.

    (what a nice Mint colour!)

So you could not see a batman game that is based of any of the other version then the most resent movie?n thats a bit odd.

Well if most assets draw inspiration from the real world but is enhanced by a cartoon mind its goes into the stylized realism, but if its leaning more towards a straight up drawn 2d world its stylized cartoon. that's why swtor would be somewhere in the middle between the two, that's also why i only had three options in my first poll.

If you make up your own definiton of what "cartoon" means then it is fine, but it has no reflection in reality. Everything that is handpainted in a semi-realistic way is a cartoon and that applies to almost every game you mentioned. There is very little use of photos in game textures, everything is painted.

If you really wanted to make a distinction, you could split cartoon into semi-realistic and non-realistic, but it wouldn't be of much use, since games are in huge majority semi-realistic.

My whole point is, you make the distinction yourself. If you look at them objectively for one second, you realize you judge by content, not graphics. Borderlands placed in your "stylized realism" category is just as cartoonish as Wildstar. You just judge by mature content, and "cool" looks, just like kids do, and they are still kids watching cartoons.

Ok, well if we can't even agree on what is cartoon and what is realistic how could we ever agree on playing the same kind of MMO? The whole point of this thread is to show the community that we will never agree on anything when it comes to MMO's so we might as well stop arguing on features and style and accept the realistic fact that there will never be one MMO to rule them all, I'v been trying to find a MMO that all my friends would play together, but I have come to the conclusion that even if its a great game, has all the features and mechanics that we all agree on, we still will never agree on art style, so even if graphics in games do not matter, they matter if everything else about the game is a  perfect fit for what we want.

I made this poll originally with three options, but apparently people wanted more options, I tried to explain how I in my own personal opinion would place different games, this is by no means the only way to interpret art styles, as with most art its in the eyes of the beholder, that's why art is called art and not anything else. If you want to place borderlands in the "cartoon" category, you are of course free to do so, it does not change the poll though. I was answering a question in the thread based on my own opinion on whats what, you will have to make that call yourself of course.

The poll is still valid how ever you view art. We could continue this thread with that exact discussion though, cause I find it just as interesting as the poll itself, what is what when it comes to art styles, and why is the reason some people want realistic looking games while others want cartoon looking games.

My personal opinion is that I would not be able to play a game if it looked like real life even if it had all the features and mechanics I want in a game simply because I find realism boring and dull, I want vibrance and pop in my colors, I have always been more inclined to chose a colorful palette over a more homogenized one. So that's why I'm asking and doing this poll.

We are talking about a MMO with all the features you want, in a sense everything is perfect for you and all that needs to be chosen is the art style.

Of course you will prove your point, but there was nothing to prove in the first place...

People will always discuss if yellow is better than blue, or oranges better than apples. Polls like this only lead to more pointless discussions like this, because one color will be always voted higher, and dumb people will start using this result as a proof to how superior that color is... it is giving the opposite, than your intentions are.

Not sure I proved my point but I'm sure there was something to prove, that me and my friends will never play the same MMO again. We did in the past because there was a lack of options, I started playing WoW with them because SWG went NGE on me, if it had not done that I would never have played WoW with them, these days there are games for each one of us, so we do not have to play together. Wich is both a sad thing, and a good thing, we all get what we want, unless we compromise, and you should never compromise with your own enjoyment? Or maybe you should, I'm not really sure.

Either I get new friends that enjoy the same kind of games as me, or I play games that I do not enjoy for my friends sake, or I stop playing games all together and go do something else with my friends, but I thought I was a gamer so its a difficult position to be in whatever the outcome of this point.

LOL only 6.5% want cartoons (I'm not one of them). Realistic here kthxbye.

Luckily, i don't need you to like me to enjoy video games. -nariusseldon.
In F2P I think it's more a case of the game's trying to play the player's. -laserit

I do like stylized realism but I could like any of the other 3 as well, it really depends.

For example I would really like a MMO with the cartoony graphical style of the manga/anime series "Black lagoon" while I avoid stuff that looks like it was made for kids.

Show me a few screenshots and I tell you if I like it....

I sort of like any type of graphic style but it reaches a border when it becomes to "flashy" example while I love the feature's of Wildstar it's just to "flashy" for me.

This might be my point too, going forward, mmo's will have all the features we could wish for, and they will either be simulations slow paced featured or arcade style fast action features, realistic or cartoony, they could be arcade realistic or simulation cartoon or vice versa, but we are heading towards a time where realistic games will soon look like real life, this will divide gamers even more considering we are where we are now its a good time to come to this realization so that we can agree that we will never be united in one mmo again.

I think this thread proves this beyond a doubt.

  • AeanderAeander Member LegendaryPosts: 8,060

    Stylized for sure.

Realism tends to lean towards dark, dreary, and hideous in video games. See the Elder Scrolls series.

Cartoony tends to lean towards aesthetically unpleasing, bulky elements (see WoW or Firefall).

A good stylized artstyle is clean, sleek, and dynamic. The best ones ooze passion and creativity. It's easy to grow attached to a stylized art style, regardless of whether it would be classified as "stylized realism or stylized cartoon," as both tend to do a good job of fixing the aesthetic weaknesses of the more extreme styles.

The title of your poll is "What kind of graphic style do you enjoy?"

The answers people choose pertain to that question.  To answer "all of the above" simply means that person enjoys all of the graphical styles you listed.  It does not mean they want them all in one game.

Guild wars 2 art style, what ever that classifies as is one of my favorite art styles.
