Point being ... no one is forcing anyone to pay anything.  Everyone can wait for release and play to their hearts content.  Beta invites are not guaranteed to anyone.  You can apply for a beta invite and if you are lucky receive an invite, or you can pay and be guaranteed an invite if you are the impatient, or must have, type.  Entirely up to you.

Maybe we should just keep every game P2P and exclusive beta invites to test.  In this way we wouldn't have all of these threads from freeloaders complaining that a game is not really F2P, or that beta invites are too expensive.  Apparently, having options are a bad thing for so many of today's entitled gamers.

    SHOW ME THE MONEY!

As long as people pay up the green and continue supporting these founders packs for early access, it won't be going away anytime soon.

But that's the problem. Most of this p2w, pay..for anything, crap is coming from people who actually think a game has to be 100% free and can only charge for things they don't want.

As vocal as they are about it...no one is taking them seriously. Games have to make money and if people will pay the game will charge for it. If that means a bunch of outraged hobo's on a forum ....oh well.

It's all part&parcel of the crony-style "capitalism" of our diseased "society" with the cult of infinite greed. These paid alphas are more then getting out of hand they are entirely obscenely out of hand, they never should exist in the first place it's a disgusting disgrace. These people should be ashamed but there is no shame in a corporate-fascist society. Only the cult-of-infinite-greed.

It's not the greed of the companies that is at fault here.  It is the stupidity of the consumers who pay to play unfinished games.  I say play because probably only 10% are testing and sending in bug reports ect.  The other 90 or so percent just want to play a game and be able to say I alpha or beta tested it which in their minds means they are better than everyone else when in fact the ones that waited are the smarter ones.

I say this as I have been testing games for years.  I even had a paid testing job in Redmond, WA. at one point in my life.

Just a side note to the OP whole idea of capitalism is what made this country a success it is the socialist, communist, etc. that are causing the major decline of the western society.  In a true capitalist system when a company fails it shuts down it doesn't get bailed out by the government to keep going and lose more money.  Socialism and communism are great on paper but can never work due human nature.

Dude chill out.....welcome to gaming in 2009 where alpha acces can be bought with cash.

Welcome to the free to play era where these players want everything for free and studios are forced to nikel and dime you or go bankrupt.

But you seem to have some big mental issues man, go outside and forget about gaming for awhile and get laid or hang out with some friends ?

Maybe i am missing something, but isn't the game really just a glorified smartphone app, complete with in app purchasing options. If anything i am surprised that they intend to release it on PC too, that is, assuming it doesn't go all vapourware on us. Either way i really don't see why all the fuss, apps like these appear on itunes/google play all the time, after a few weeks, if that, they're just replaced with something new anyway.image

What's with all the people thinking something can be free nowadays?

Do you really think a company can invest 3 digit million $ on a game for YOU to play FREE? No, seriously... how do you think these companys work?

Start using your brain here folks, nothing is free.

You are only free to log in and some games even let you play some for free. Want the full experience? Pay! Want to get in early? Pay! Want something shiny? Pay!

And while we are at it: Would you rather pay your phone bill per megabyte spend? Or have a flat? Exactly. You usually go for the cheap flats and are happy to save a shitton of money. Now why in the world do you want to pay by feature for games?

I seriously don't get why FTP is even a thing still. It is way more expensive to get the full game, i don't want to play a game with half features. Stop calling it FTP because it is not. And stop thinking it can be free, it can not.

MMOs finally replaced social interaction, forced grouping and standing in a line while talking to eachother.

Now we have forced soloing, forced questing and everyone is the hero, without ever having to talk to anyone else. The evolution of multiplayer is here! We won,... right?

Yes because P2P never had more than 15$ per month to charge. Get real and live in the present not in the rose tinted past.

Except you NEVER had to pay to test a game, they basically had to beg people at one time.

All that has happened is we have gained a large number of irresponsible spenders and the devs see it and leech off of them.

Yes we blame SOME of the consumers but not all of them, matter of fact a VERY small% are ruining it for everyone.

SOE learned very quickly that they could make more money per player rather than worrying about big numbers and larger expenditures.

Sadly ALL of these games are going to be designed to cater to having lots of free loaders ,so the entire quality of the game and graphics will be low.

The genre seriously needs a really good  effort  by some developer and ONLY sub fees no other lame gimmicks for money.I think a lot of gamer's are so fed up they would fully respect any developer at this point who doesn't play head games and just lays out quality and nothing more.

If you can't pay the going rate, wait your turn until the price is something you can afford.

Both will likely be F2P someday, if that's what you want to pay, wait until the right time comes.

It won't happen - there is simply not enough money in sub model to warrant it.

Cash shops can be far more profitable when combined with any other model because putting in a limit on player spending makes no sense.

MMOs are a business so naturally they will want to maximize profits - limiting income to a set amount per player is financial suicide.

No real reason to focus on only one payment model, if a company can get away with getting people to pay up front with a box fee, then a sub, and then spend even more in a cash shop they've probably achieved their finanical goals, to maximize revenues and profits.

This title was the first thing I read when I woke up this morning... Guess it's just business as usual @mmorpg.

Devs seem to regard this transitionary period between hard development and release as a sort of get out of jail free card to outside scrutiny. Bugs, shoddy programming, game-breaking mechanics... well don't worry: "It's beta." No, it's a marketing tactic to cover up rushed development.

They're charging money for the service, they should be judged on the experience, not the potential one we might get months/years down the line. Except they're not. We go along with the sham and come up with justifications for the price.

Free to play after we sell the pre-alpha,  then the alpha, the closed beta,  beta, and the pre-release  -Smed

edit - It's hard for me to blame the little guy though.

Did you just start playing MMOs? AA is not the first even close to do this. This is a long running trend that started with preordering on console games...

Just wait for the release date? I don't see the issue

So, sure. Why not blame them for setting the trend? Even though others have gone there before. image

This site has always allowed an appropriate amount of profanity.  Your post starts to push that limit though.
