Why? It's rich lore and story. The quests mechanics are so well covered by the great little stories, incredible voice acting, superb delivery. I've found that something as simple as deliberately not reading the quest dialogue and watching the voices breathe life to these characters has done wonders in adding another layer to this already sublime experience.
One may argue that it's not necessarily a role-playing game; well, even during PnP RPGs, there were those that didn't role play either. Playing an RPG does not mean one has to engage in RP. Yet, if no one else is going to give me a rich story so at least I can.
I've only been immersed in story in two other MMOs....SW:TOR and The Secret World.
If you passed this one up, or rushed through and are considering a go at this one, give it a chance if not for the story alone. That's well worth the admission (or readmission) price.

I'm sure others may not, but I do agree with you here. For me thus far it's one of the more addictive titles in an RP sense, more so than any MMO since I left SWG.

I agree. Even the bland quests were fairly entertaining.
I left because of the never ending introduction of more new bugs per patch then they fix, and the apparently re-introduced memory & FPS bug.
Other then that its a very entertaining game.
I bought the game just for the reason of voiced quests, immersion etc. After SWTOR I could not get immersed in any other MMO except TSW, which I like a lot. I did not get above level 8 in ESO though... combat killed it for me, combat and not being able to darn click on stuff on screen. I hated it so much that I just stopped playing after just few days.
I desperately tried all classes up to level 8 to see if I can maybe at least tolerate combat in any of them, but combat just bored me to death. I am not a fan of action combat, I love old fashioned tab combat of EQ2 and SWTOR. Even TSW combat is much closer to these games than ESO. Same reason, why I did not last long in GW2.

Just looking at the combat, I am a fan of what ESO has done, its a good blend of arcade. Like you though I did not like GW2's combat. But what intrigued me was you said you like TSW and thought that was more like EQ2.
For me TSW had the worst combat of all the games you have mentioned, It reminded me of those old Beat em' Up games where you just mash buttons. TSW is a fine game for questing and the like, I would put it in my top five for that, but for combat it was awful.
If you are not a fan of action combat its going to take awhile to get used to and some just never enjoy it. My wife was exactly the same way actually quitting the game around level 8 or 9. Then after a couple of months of watching me pvp and enjoy it and not jumping around mmorpgs like i did so much in the past she gave it another shot and actually tried really hard to learn the combat systems. Now she wont play another tab target game again because she says they play way to slow.
Moral of the story , Ive seen plenty of your posts from SWTOR , you are pretty level headed here. Give it another shot , I think if you really try hard to master the combat you will eventually really like it. The cool thing about ESO is you do not have to dodge roll like GW2 and TSW . Your right mouse button blocks attacks with any weapon. Also you can hold block and hit your left mouse button and thrust , knocking things off balance when they try their power up moves etc. Also hotkeys are your friends in this game 1-5 E and R is all you really need and Q occasionally. once you train your hand in the end you will probably enjoy this sort of combat.
Sorcerer and well Archers too have a soft-lock which pretty much feel like Tab-targeting to me.
I think part of the problem is that magic in ESO is very poorly done, its more about using staff's and tbh, overall the combat is a bit boring, easily mastered granted but, not really enough there to make it interesting enough, so far though i have levelled up an archer to level 11 and a sorcerer to 12, currently a templar/tankadin type to level 10, but it just isnt all that interesting, and forcing myself to work through them just isn't fun.
I picked the game up cheap from amazon, £11. so i don't feel as though i wasted my money, its just i don't really see the game having any long term appeal at all, i should probably have waited longer before activating the game, maybe in another few months, maybe 6, it will be time to check out the game again, but i have to say, until the combat improves, i don't think i will.
I had similar feelings when I first bought it. Of course, I came to these forums and reading post after post about how "awful" the game was really must have convinced me on some level it wasn't a good game.
Yet, after Wildstar I resubbed for some reason. I feel that Wildstar gave me enough distance to form a new opinion on the game and I'm loving it. Perhaps the same can happen to you.
When I first started playing ESO I also had high hopes. However, I just never felt as drawn into the lore of Elder Scrolls as much as I was in say Skyrim. Perhaps my time with Skyrim just jaded my outlook or expectations. ESO just never measured up to what I was expecting to see. Yes, there are reference to things in ESO that IF YOU WERE PAYING ATTENTION you might understand. However, it was too easy to just get into that same ole MMO grind mode where you just ignore the story and trudge on through. There were reasons for me to pay attention. So, in the end, I just judge ESO as pretty much like every other MMO.

Well at level 10 you have like 4 skills and no passives. You probably don't even have an ultimate. At level 10 you are playing with less than 2% of the combat skills. I agree it was pretty boring for me back then too
Since then ESO developed into the most dynamic character development and combat system I've had the pleasure to play.
ot- There is certainly something about the TES lore. Even the mighty Warcraft (lore I loved) pales in comparison. To me, it's my generation's Lord of the Rings. Truly timeless stuff.
Well I have only tryed the game out and I do think it's a good game, if I ever find a reason to quit GW2 and get my friends with me then ESO would be the game that I would play. After GW2 I can never go back to a tab target gameplay and the pvp in this game is awesome.
So you just might see me logging in a few years from now cause it's seems good.
GL all ESO players hope your game lives long enough for me to buy it
I heard the exact same thing with WOW, with LOTRO, with AOC, with SWTOR, with GW2...yawn. I say the same thing I say with every MMO. Most MMOs are as solo as you want them to be. Though some of the grouping mechanics in this game have been horrible, they have improved them since launch (like traveling to the group leader). They mentioned just a couple of weeks ago grouping issues is their priority such as knowing when in a group exactly what leg of a quest someone is on. Anyway, I have had zero problems forming groups, finding others to fight with at the anchors, RPG fun in town, socializing in guilds, teaming up with others in dungeons, finding folks jumping in to help with world bosses, just tried PVP for the first time and it felt very social to me...so maybe people just need to work on their social skills.

I guess it all depends on one's RPG background. If a person played Final Fantasy and other CRPGs where the player is going through the motions of unlocking the next chapter of the main character's story, then it seems very true to that path.
I'm from another branch of RPG gaming. ADnD, MUDs, rogue-likes, Telengard, the Ultima and Wizardry series... all of which are far more freeform. While I find games like WoW and ESO to be great games with entertaining stories, they really don't capture the essence of the style of RPG I am most familiar with.

When I saw this topic I came here to post that there were two others who did story in an MMORPG very well too.
But apparently you've already beaten me to that.
So instead I'll just go with nicely said!

Nah, we just need to convince the devs that forced grouping is the way to go! Death to solo play! Group or GTFO!
According to some of the posts I've seen on these forums in the past that's the golden ticket to making the most successful MMO evah.

Nice send up, but grouping has been lacking in MMOs for years. 'Forced' grouping is no different from 'forced' soloing which is where we are today.
While I enjoyed the quests in ESO, by level 35 I was getting pretty burned out on them, and when I realized they expected me to complete the other 2 factions to reach VR 10 I opted out. (I realize there are other, more exploitive paths you can take)
Just not the style of MMO an old EVE player like me enjoys.

I recently resubbed and my personally thoughts on the games biggest flaw as an RPG is the level locked content. This goes so against the Elder Scrolls theme. A system that would have allowed all content to scale would have been nice. GW2 was spot on in that aspect.
Level locked as in you going back in lower level zones and your level scaling down to the zone? Or do you mean that they should have opened up the game as TES games normally do, so that you can go to different places right from the start?
Cause if it's the latter, then last time I checked GW2 also didn't allow you to go wherever you wanted. You had to level up to get to higher zones, same as ESO.

nah it falls short against single player rpgs that put all their efforts into the rpg and story of it. It doest probably better than other mmos, but nothing close to the sp rpgs (including TES)
