It always showed both sides but pvp for castles and naval combat were always the main selling points.

It was always about conflict between the races and even the lore if filled with race  wars.

So yes it has always been about pvp and conflict.

No. It was just one of the features they push. The main one is:

    " Player-Driven Economy

Gatherers, crafters, and traders: You are the engine that drives ArcheAge, and its economy is yours to control. Master diverse skills to craft goods and homes, galleons and castles. Transport and trade materials across the realm, braving danger and piracy to support your allies in wars that will change the fate of the world."

Followed by the PVP and Naval Warfare previously mentioned.

The majority of the content is based around PvE activities such as questing, gathering, mining, farming, crafting, trading, fishing etc. PvP is entirely optional much the same as it was in SWG. The difference is where SWG used a flagging system, Archeage defines each area as PvP enabled or not. The vast majority of areas in your home continent are PvP free at all times, some of it PvP free most of the time. Only a small amount is PvP enabled most of the time. None of it all the time.

The ocean is permanently PvP enabled, as is most of the northern continent. Most of your opposite factions continent is dangerous to you but even there many areas regularly go into peacetime and it's safe to go there then.

Archeage was, and still is advertised as a sandbox game. You do whatever you want. If you dont want PVP, there are safe zones, and even high lvl PVP zones have a peace periods during which you can explore, quest, do PVE and whatever you like in them. Game doesn't force anything upon you, if you want PVP, you do PVP. If you want PVE, you do PVE. If you want Farmville, you can focus on your personal farm, and you will gain as much experience, if not more, from crafting/farming/gathering activities as you would from PVE/PVP. Entirely feasible to level entirely through crafting, and not kill even 1 mob, there is only 6 quest chain in game that is sort of mandatory, because it gives you your scarecrows (small and big one) that you use to claim land, and these are non-combat trading quest, in theory doable by even lvl 1 players. Rest of the game content is entirely optional, and most of it is not even level-restricted.
