I just wanted to throw in my 2 cents, since there doesn't seem to be too many alpha players posting lately.
I played alpha with a friend, hit max, did the crafting, trading, ship runs, pvp, etc.
I lost count how many hours we put into it.
The game was pretty nice, with a pretty in depth crafting system.
The game was somewhat grindy with crafting in terms of getting the best gear as there was a lot of RNG in proccing the crafted gear to a higher level. The gear even had a chance to proc DOWN, and it had to be of a specific type to be able to proc to a higher level, but I won't get into that. The materials to get weren't that cheap either. Also some rare materials had ridiculously low %tages and it basically made some vehicles like the farming wagon/tractor or w/e somewhat rare (because it was such a bitch to make).
Plots of land were constantly taken up, and it was difficult finding a nice plot of land. Sure, some people said you could find some secret plots etc hidden away, but honestly there just wasn't enough land imho (That just may have been me). You'd have people writing down the dates of when certain plots would free up when the owner didn't pay their taxes and then hope to be the first one to plant your scarecrow or w/e first before the 5+ other people waiting to plant theirs as well. Not fun.
Then the patch hit. As if the game wasn't already pretty grindy, and it just made it an even longer grind. They tried to make it so that getting the guilda stars or w/e a super pain in the ass to get and upped the cost on a lot of stuff, while nerfing a ton of money making trade routes as well.
Don't get me wrong, we had quite a decent amount of fun farming, crafting, pvping, killing shit for a good while. Once they threw in the patch it kinda put a damper in it for us.
Anyways, take this with a grain of salt, but I haven't noticed many alpha players posting on these forums anymore either. I dunno if they just left, got bored, or what. The game up front seems really cool and I can see the hype from the Closed Betas. The nice thing is if you started in closed beta, you may or may not be okay with the "grindiness" that the game is currently in.
Lots of good stuff in the game hidden behind the generic questing (and the labor point fiasco) kind of made it less fun for me. Limited time betas arent enough either. I will definitely dedicate AA more time after launch (or open beta) in order to have a better assessment of its fun factor for myself.
Totally unbiased question. Not interested in cost, the opinion on the game store, or problems that the game has at the moment. I am genuinely interested in the question: Are you having a fun time playing the game?
//\
If your having trouble answering this question, or would like to expand; here are some specific questions myself, and I am sure others would like to hear if you have time to post:
Have you lost track of time while playing, if so; how long?
Have you encountered a "memorable" moment?
While at work / school / or doing a chore, have you found yourself thinking about getting to play ArcheAge?
Have you stopped playing a different game in favor of playing ArcheAge?
Would you recommend this game to a friend?
I appreciate your feedback and I am sure others will read what you have typed as well. Some may even base their opinion of the game or if they will play the game on what you say. I greatly and sincerely appreciate honesty both positive and negative.
Having a blast even as a F2P player in CB4. I will deffinitely be subbing for launch though.
Lost track of time? Yes, could have sworn it was only 11,30pm the other night but it was1.45am lol.
Memorable moment? Yes, whilst waiting for some quest npcs who spawn at certain time of the day/night cycle in a small group....went for a smoke and came back to find my small group suddenly had over 45 members lol. Spent the rest of the time waiting for the spawn chatting, dancing, duelling and stuff. Was a right laugh.
Thinking about AA at work? Yes, hence I am posting now.
Stopped playing Wildstar and SWTOR in favour of subbing to AA upno release. It also looks likely to make a big dent in my Dark Souls 2 time....that alone tells me I am seriously enjoying AA
Have already reccommended to many friends
General statement: Yes, I am having a ton of fun even as a F2P account in CB4. The game reminds me of UO crossed with SWG somehow and that is a GREAT thing
I enjoyed my weekend with AA, but I think LP are alittle over the top, I understand the purpose for it in crafting, gathering, farming and such but use LP to open alittle purse is odd.
Would be better of they put in a loot table for mobs, I really loved the loot table in EQ2, when all of the sudden on a random mob you find a fable item.
But all in all, I will sub to AA when it goes live.
Having played CBT 2,3 and 4 i started off as a free to play, but i found that with how i enjoy to gather and farm in the game, that was not for me, so i got a silver pack. And i enjoyed the game much more. Tradepacking and Money making might not be for everyone, but the game lets you do a lot of stuff thats silly and funny.
I've lost a 3-4 hours of time, my stomach told me it had been time to eat 2 hours ago when i got my time back.
Memorable moment: Getting my first harpoon clipper and dragging it on to land, hanging it from the airship Tower, where after shooting and hitting an airship and getting dragged along by it in the air, i laughed my ass off.
While at Work, yes, guess where i am?
Have stopped playing a differnt game? Nope, because i don't have anything else worth playing right now.
Already recommended it to a couple of friends.
One big thing, to me this game feels more like Eve Online than any other mmo i've ever played, because it is sandbox with theampark elements added in, and the theampark elements are not that great. It might go with out saying, but playing with other people is what makes this game fun, defently wouldn't recommend this to people who play an mmo as a solo thing.
Yes, genuinely the best MMORPG I have played in over a decade.
I am not saying that it is perfect, I don't defend everything about it, but IMO only an unhappy fool demands perfection in an MMORPG.
Ultimately, it's about a balance... Does the fun outweigh the irritations for me as a long term player that wants to invest in the game and it's community? The answer is a firm yes.
The game is nostalgic and brings to mind some fond memories of other Open World games I've enjoyed over the years. The levels are easy to obtain by questing and that alone is where tracking time slips away. I want a payback for my effort that leads to results, but I feel I'm at the mercy of developers. I'm being pulled through the game by these quests but there is little satisfaction in getting where they want me to be by a certain time or level.
Crafting is always a welcomed challenge in MMOG's. Some people are amazing at what they accomplish over time. I am not one of those players. The RNG associated with quest rewards and crafting is going to cause some frustration in my mind. I get that the uber players will have tried, failed and succeeded in crafting the best of the best. Resource management is key and of course Labor Points.
PvP is a thrill in Open Worlds. We are not forced to fight in arenas (puke) or guided to playgrounds to kick sand in the weaker player's face. This is a huge plus for me. I've spent years playing OW PVP and find every level of it superbly enjoyable. I see the PvP model in AA as one with a built-in honor system. Becoming criminal has penalties and drawbacks. One player wrote that they were ganked, 'trust killed', and spent 20 minutes hunting down the player until they found them. The player got lucky. In future scenarios, you might not ever find that player and will have to deal with that road when crossed. It is a part of the PvP world.
I see many avenues that lead to 'end-game' where communities will be thrashed by players who woke up early to play vs those players who have gone to sleep. Having a diverse, worldwide guild is important in surviving those midnight PVP Raids. It's been done before. No one wants to lose and AA has a few ways to lose without even seeing another player. Albeit, if you are a 'hardcore player', one willing to obtain the labor points, grind the crafts, and spend every waking moment trying to be the top tier player, the game opens faster and time invested will have a huge net return in terms of survival and social worth.
The game takes away from grandeur in terms of finding a few things enjoyable. Our eyes, wide open, want to progress in the mundane activities (farming, crafting, trading). While these actions are easy under protection of being a lowbie, a player with need to deal with being resource starved once powerful guilds develop these type of restrictive plans. There are no heroes or heroines, just survivors who will eventually move in the shadows and avoid player contact.
All these things I love and enjoy. A game that delivers thrill is a game I like to play. However, the biggest and most important part of gaming is loot. The game just lacks the DnD feel. What is wrong with a level 15 being able to easily craft a decent set of armor or weapons? If they go criminal, they will eventually suffer that consequence. So let the system manage it. I feel that players are being penalized twice with the inability to craft earlier and the taxing Labor Point System.
I'm not asking for a carebear world where rainbows and unicorns flourish. I'm hoping that the old school time-sinking is placed on the back burner where players can immerse just a bit more before starting a life of heroics or crime.
No. The game lacks both immediate and long-term enjoyment. There is little to nothing that is nextgen or remotely close to the kind of MMOG's that last more than 90days live. When developers fail to realize that return on investment doesn't mean a thing to gamers, we will see better games that listen to the voices of those whom support it.
Nothing is free... and we don't even care that it is.
I was actually having quite a bit of fun during the CBT's, vastly more so in fact than another recent beta test and release that, in the spirit of your unbiased question, I will not name here.
Have you lost track of time while playing, if so; how long?
Every time I login to just "rotate crops" and "do errands". It's always bedtime when I look up.
Have you encountered a "memorable" moment?
My first rowboat banana run. Winning "scarecrow roulette". My first mass off-grid farming attempt. Making my boat. Getting kidnapped and taken for a submarine ride. Cresting the hill into Villanelle the first time. Discovering the undersea magma crater. Finding a farm house spot.
While at work / school / or doing a chore, have you found yourself thinking about getting to play ArcheAge?
I'm at work now....
Have you stopped playing a different game in favor of playing ArcheAge?
Not really, I was taking a break from games for a bit.
Would you recommend this game to a friend?
Recommended it to several, two are now completely hooked.
In answer to your question. A resounding yes!. Have had fun in all the CB events that I have plated in..3 of them. I am going to drop a Sub to another game to sub to AA. It's an odd game..it has an old school feel in some ways..but with some newer elements. I haven't rocketed to "end game" I don't pay that way..I like to take my time. But I AM coming up on 30..where OWPvp starts..am going to see how that goes.If it turns into a "gankfest"..well...but..if it is like early UO with PK'S and Anti-PK'S then I'll suit up...and join in with a will...tho I am prolly the world's worsts PvP er..doesn't mean I won't have fun. And That's the thing..I AM having fun..and as long as I do..the game will get me money..when it ceases to be fun..me will stop. oh..yes...I have indeed "lost time"..am "retired"(yeah, me am an OLD gamer...LOL!) so don't work BUT yeah..I've found meself thinkin bout AA when not home. And yes I have recommended this game to folks! All I can say is Get into a CB..or open Beta when it comes..and try it for yourself..don't believe the "hype" OR the "negativity" either way..get in try it..and see for yourself! ==(:*D
I've had way more fun in the closed beta tests than I ever would have anticipated.
I'm part of that growing number of grumpy old gamers that haven't had found an MMO worth playing 5+ years. I started Archeage hearing that the game really gets good by around 30+, and it definitely came through. First 20 levels (a few hours of grinding) were typical shitty hub quest grinding but everything from the class system to the pvp to the exploration and numerous sandbox gameplay spheres make this game really incredible.
Basically clicking away text windows ruins every MMO, try to have fun instead of rushing things. Without story and lore all there is left is a bunch of mechanics. Reply Add Multi-Quote
During the second day of CBT2 i found a 100+ secret tree farm in my "not so secret anymore" spot. There was a dude in AKF mode and all the trees were ready. I left the dude alive since i was already stealing 100 trees from him; but decided otherwhise at some point since he was 12 lvls above me and i still had many trees to harvest.
Ended up with 700 logs which allowed me to make my boat and build my scarecrow within half a day. Since i had remorses i bought all trees i could with the money i had and sent him. I had enough money only for 30 trees though XD

Not atm, im not a founder so cant play it now .
Waiting for release so my fun can continue
Having fun every second i spend in it.
Have you lost track of time while playing, if so; how long?
Nope; when i play i keep my clock near the monitor to avoid playing for 24h.
Have you encountered a "memorable" moment?
Plenty. The first time i played it through 50 i was excited for many little things as i lvled up XD

Probably everyone's reaction when they boot up ArcheAge come launch day...
On launch day I will be in some corner unconscious of too much coffeine over the last 96 hours :P
