Just a quick write up of some thoughts that have been clicking around in Da Skull.
So, remember when you were a kid and you got your hands on some beer. It was like, "oh man its BEER! lets go drink this beer, it'll be awesome!" And hey, it was awesome! it was BEER!
remember what you were drinkin back then? I remember my first beer was a rolling rock. soon after I experienced milwaukee's best, PBR, Bud, the silver bullet, natty ice. All the beers that you drink when you're younger.
Well i'm .... er past 30 now. I LOVE beer... that much hasn't changed. but you would have to pay me (in better beer mind you) to drink a rolling rock again. I still can't believe i loved it back in the day. Well, now I know, I like Marzens (like sam's oktoberfest) and unfiltered wheat beers, and the occasional good IPA when i'm eating something sweet. I don't think of beer just as beer; i have refined my tastes... and to a real beer snob i'm still a newb ofc

Remember when you first played EQ, WoW, Uo, Ao? the first MMO. It was like "oh man its an ONLINE RPG! Let's play this online RPG, it'll be awesome!" And it was awesome! It was like a pencils and paper rpg 24/7!
Now, you can't find a game that suits you. I think you can see where this is heading... i'll skip to my main point
My point is this. Why is it that with beer, we don't go "man why don't they make beer like rolling rock anymore, nothing has captured the rolling rock experience, all i have now is this icky imperial porter" But with MMO's we essentially do?
my theory is this. we are sitting there with sam adams oktoberfest in hand, but we pine for mmo rolling rock! MMO's have not become worse per se (there are truly hideous MMO out there just as there are hideous beers) but they have become distinct. just as a beer lover differentiates beers into 5 billion different categories, we now have an MMO for every taste. you want sandbox PVE? (landmark) sandbox PVP? (eve) would you prefer your sandbox pvp in fantasy instead of sci-fi? (Albion, DF) Would you like your themepark small group or multi group (Lotro, Rift respectively)? YOU GOT IT!
when we pine for the old MMO days we pine for a time when we only had a couple choices and they suited the tastes we didn't know we had yet just fine. We pine for when beer was just beer. We pine for the past, not because of what beer (or mmo) was, but what we were.
...
enough of the misty eyed crap now go the heck out there, spend some time and figure out what your tastes really are in an MMO, then do a bit of research and find one. Heck you have a job and half these games are freemium; find two. Chances are your MMO match is already there for you- or at least it's in paid alpha phase *grin*
and of course when there's downtime, come here and complain "if rolling rock ever makes another progression server i am SO THERE, MAN!!"
Thx for reading. thoughts??
