Blizzard has "six or seven" World of Warcraft expansions planned

World of Warcraft director Tom Chilton has revealed that Blizzard have “six or seven” expansions planned for their iconic MMORPG. While the expansion that will arrive after Warlords of Draenor is already in active development, a number of others clocking up “10 years worth of stuff” are being discussed.

“I think it’ll be quite a while before the financials indicate that it’s just not worth doing anymore."

----

Speaking to Gameplanet, Tom Chilton confirmed that they’re already thinking far into the future of World of Warcraft. ”There are about six or seven different ideas for expansions that we can take elements of and say, ‘You know what? Let’s take that and put it in this one for our next expansion after the next one.’ Or we might shift the timelines around from what we originally envisioned. There’s easily 10 years worth of stuff that we can draw from – more, really.”

blizzard has mentioned this in the past, and its not really that surprising that they would plan out they're overarching story implementation years in advance.

Its their IP, they can continue to add as long as its profitable.

Think the problem right now is to add new class.... they need new class and race to make the game more interesting, i feel.

Making a billion + a year . I too would milk if forever. No point in ever making a wow 2 . People will play that game till they die or they unplug the servers. Can't hate WOW for that.

    Good for them. :)

EQ1 is still making expacs, no reason why a great game like WoW cant keep on going with more.

    Something Awful this way comes.

  • rodingorodingo Member RarePosts: 2,870

I can easily see them doing it.  One thing for sure is that there will always be people who are willing to buy what Blizzard sells.  Plus now that WoW is a getting a facelift, it will continue well into the next decade to squeeze in more expacs which will likely include yet another facelift again in another ten years.  Then the cycle will just continue on, and on, and on...

People might not like it but Blizzard has the talent and experience to keep turning profits with their games.  It's as simple as that.

Come on man you have already made it clear you hate wow and have no intention of ever playing it. So why troll every news about the game? you can certainly not speak on behalf of others.

You don't know me at all.  Because if you did, you would know that I have played WoW for a great number of years.  But you just assumed what you typically assumed.  I never spoke anything on behalf of others.  But read into this what you will, it is what you do.

I have read your previous posts and you have made it clear many times you have no intention of ever playing it again. I don't want to go through your post history but you know it as do i.

I really don't care either way but i find it strange that people would continue to hate on game, which they have been very loud on forums as to how they will never touch it again.

If you were saying it is a snoozfest for you for another 10 years then again like i said you don't even play the game anymore. let it go?

Why does every post about wow has to turn into pissing contest?

Who started the pissing contest?  You did.  I just made a reply.  You saw it as an opportunity to argue.  That was all you.  And now look where we are.  Derailing a thread so that you can hash out nothing.

I simply asked you why would you continue to 'troll' the game you have no intention of ever playing again. I find this behavior very strange and that is the reason why these forums are the way they are now. I dislike several MMOS here, but you won't see me jumping on every post about those games and make comments just to get a rise out of people.

I stick to games i am playing.

The thing about WoW is this, they not only do a facelift, or new class or race, but they also add new contents, like garrison in this coming x-pac.

They re-do old spells animations, node, pet battle, revamp talent tress ( good or bad watever) etc....

This is the part which other mmo fail.

Other mmo dont look back and polish up their old contents, or add new things to their mmo. Just put in more quest, levels raid.

So as wow grows older, their contents get richer and richer...

Who's know, next x-pac we may have housing, sea battles,  or even 3 faction ?

Understand this, new mmo is going up against current wow, and not wow of 2004, if players and dev fail to realize this, than their themepark mmo will forever fail to grab the throne away.

As soon as I can stomach the terrible dungeon community this game has nurtured I will go back. It has a lot of content no denying that.

If they ever add Murlocs to the playable race, then I'll play WoW for the next 30 expansions :)

That's not to say I wouldn't play it for the next 30 expansions without Murlocs.  It's still the best MMO out there in terms of fun, but haters gonna hate.

Warlords is changing too much too fast....Lets see how it does, then care afterwards. I just have a feeling this expansion isn't a good idea.

I wonder if any WOW player considers a further 10 years of WOW with excitement.  Now if Blizzard were to say they were actively developing WOW 2 (new world, 60 levels, new skills, new lore etc) then yes.  Playing WOW in 10 years time would be the equivelant of playing Arena or warcraft orcs v humans today.

    rpg/mmorg history: Dun Darach>Bloodwych>Bards Tale 1-3>Eye of the beholder > Might and Magic 2,3,5 > FFVII> Baldur's Gate 1, 2 > Planescape Torment >Morrowind > WOW > oblivion > LOTR > Guild Wars (1900hrs elementalist) Vanguard. > GW2(1000 elementalist), Wildstar

Now playing GW2, AOW 3, ESO, LOTR, Elite D

If they didn't keep improving the game, I'd agree with your last statement. However, they make tech changes with each expansion, and even with some patches. They are improving old race models, making the new areas look better with each expansion, etc. While the core design of the game will always remain the same, the look and feel of the game can be improved over time.

I'm actually interested to see what they have planned for the next number of years. EQ1 and WoW seem to be the only two games that have actively developed their games well past the usual time that mmos tend to slow way down. Which is also probably why both games still have a very loyal fanbase. Ironically, each game was/is the western king of mmos in terms of population for their time.

They don't improve the majority of assets with every expansion. That asside, what would you rather see, another 10 years of incremental changes, or a new game after 15 years (being the earliest possible date if even then)

Everquest has been going on for how many years now? and they have hardly made any big changes to their game over the years like Blizzard did with WOW. So another 10 years for WOW means nothing really it can easily go on for more.

Everquest is pretty much a perfect example of what I am talking about.

...we just got a new race/class last expansion. Don't get used to it every expansion lol.

Besides, following their track record so far, we've gotten a new class every other expansion. So the expansion after WoD will likely give us another new class. And we've gotten a new race the last 2 expansions. There isn't a new one this go round, but they're at least updating the graphics and animation on the rest of the old races this time around.
