What is your role in 'The Trinity?'

mgilbrtsnmgilbrtsn Member EpicPosts: 3,430

I thought this would be an interesting topic/poll.  I've played numerous MMOs and when trying to find a group, there were usually rules of thumb depending on zones, dungeons, levels, etc on what roles were most likely to be picked for the group. I'm curious as to what the general distribution is between the categories and why you prefer one type over the other.

To be clear, I'm assuming the standard definition of the trinity.  (DPS, Healing, and Tanking).

I personally prefer a distant DPS type of character, followed by Healing.  Both of which are distance based.  I don't really care for the hectic movements of direct combat classes.

I self identify as a monkey.

I have been playing mmo's for 14 years and have been healing for the last 10. I guess I prefer watching health bars and buffing over kicking butt and taking names.

The funny thing is, you're doing the exact same thing as a DPS, only instead of spamming your skills on the boss or trash, you're spamming them on your party/raid members.  I've done both roles, and they are identical short of the targets.

In PVE games with dungeons I usually roll a tank because I know how and plus the wait time to get into a dungeon is nearly non-existent since more people would rather be pew pew dps.  I also sometimes play a tank in PVP games due trying a sword and board forsaken in WoW several years ago and had a blast being nearly unkillable.

I've traditionally gravitated towards DPS specs. However, with multi-speccing now, sometimes I'll change it up and try "other DPS". But yeah, otherwise, I'm typiclaly a DPSer.

"Yeah............. but did you see the Damage Meter???????"

If the tank dies.........."It's the healer's fault", If the healer dies......."It's the tank's fault", If DPS dies............."It's DPS's fault"

Or, to break down the trinity into basics that DPSers can understand.....

Roles work as follows..... You hit stuff (DPS), or you help someone hit stuff (Tank) or you help someone to help someone to hit stuff (Healer)

Wait....what??? Support roles? Strategies? Tactics? Whassat? I thought I'm supposed to just hit what the tank hits.

It would have been nice to add the other types of players to the poll, there is more than just the trinity. You should add a "utility" player option at least.

In DAOC I played a Minstrel. Not one of the trinity.  I liked Controllers in CoH, not one of the trinity.

In the "Quadrant" I prefer support roles such as bard if there are any. Following that in a typical "Trinity" game is long range dps. I usually always try to be a long range dps in new games to learn most mechanics easier and faster, helping me level other jobs easier through first hand experience versus research every aspect of a game.

My favorite class was the Paladin in DAoC. It was hell if you didn't macro your chant twists, but a lot of fun if you did.

Sword and board allowed me to off-tanks while bringing along buffs for the group (endurance, resistances, armor, etc.) At the time, you couldn't "twist" all your chants, so you grouped combos into different macros and used the one most appropriate for the situation. Beyond that, you were many times the off-tank.. Back when there weren't (dare I say easy-mode) AoE short recharge taunts to make things simple. Mobs peeled off if the DPS hit too hard (or used AoE inappropriately), a mob resisted a CC, or the healer had to burst heal due to any of the above or a tank making a mistake.

In short, I had to pay attention to the situation to ensure the squishies were protected and I was twisting the appropriate chants to benefit my group according to the current situation.. Which ended up being a shit ton of fun (mixed in with DAoC's weapon style combo system). If I had to pigeonhole it, I guess tank would be the most fitting.. Though that doesn't nearly describe the role accurately.

Kinda surprised at how even the distribution is.

Dedicated healer for life, GW2 can go suck it.

    Something Awful this way comes.

The Trinity was the worst game mechanic ever introduced into mmorpgs.  It leads to uninspired gameplay where everyone sticks to their comfortable little niche like a limpet, terrified of thinking out of the box.  It's why I like to play solo instead of grouping up and playing a set role that is apparently carved in stone.

I think the class/game I enjoyed playing the most was a Bard in Eden Eternal where I supported everything.  I buffed, I threw in heals here and there when the healer couldn't keep up, and I added DoT to the boss.

I chose DPS due to the lack of true CC roles these days.  I absolutely love playing something like a bard and buffing my group while also CC'ing mobs and keeping them alive.

Tanking i refuse to do anymore with todays impatient playerbase.  Healing is something i'll never do because i like watching the flow of battle instead of staring at hotbars.  Much respect for people that enjoy either though.

Lots of healers, wow. Me too. My main was a tank (Paladin); but I enjoyed the decision making and group-completing abilities of the cleric. A cleric has more at risk, too. If the cleric messes up; someone dies.

Luckily, i don't need you to like me to enjoy video games. -nariusseldon.
In F2P I think it's more a case of the game's trying to play the player's. -laserit

So what's your Guild Wars 2 trinity role?

    Damage

    Control

No need to list “Other classes”.  All classes are defined by the trinity.  All CC classes are healers.  All CC spells are damage mitigation spells, aka healing spells.

In DaoC, the Minstrel was meant to be a dual spec DPS/Healer.  Data confirms that DPS players play this kind of character as a DPS.  Healer type players play it as a Healer.  There are no other or “Utility classes”.

Same is true for CoH / Controller.  Meant to be a healer by designers, but played as a DPS by players.  Not a utility or other class.

F2P means you get what you paid for. Pay nothing, get nothing.
    Even telemarketers wouldn't think that.
It costs money to play.  Therefore P2W.

The Trinity wasn’t introduced, it is how our brains work.  There has been some talk of other class types.  Let me assure all who read this thread, there are no other types.  The way your brain works will shine through the BS and every gamer will play their role in the trinity.  Because that is who they are.

A DPS player will not think, now it is time for me to do some healing.  They will gear, spec, and play as a true DPS  regardless of the game mechanics thrown at them.

Well, there is no role I hate, but to me tanking was the most fun.

    - You are the one who approached the big bosses while the rest of the crew was hiding behind your back.

    - It seems to be the most challenging, in matters of equipment and skills.

    - Since fewer tanks are needed and there is less room for error, you're not just one of the hundreds of DPS classes, where it doesn't matter that much whether you play average or good.

Let's play Fallen Earth (blind, 300 episodes)

Let's play Guild Wars 2 (blind, 45 episodes)

tanking is usually the least challenging role.. it's just a matter of if you are willing to take the lead or not.. and even that is'nt mandatory to fulfill the role.

I had fun once, it was terrible.

Ive been a tank since i started playing MMO's 15+ years back.

I feel like the Tank is the most important job out there if you screw up people notice, mobs flying everywhere etc. I always got compliments on my tanking back in the day :) the defenition of crowd control:)

I find other classes too boring too play. but i have to be honest ive never tried a healer ever. I dont like the idea of messing that up and having people die on me. As a tank i can stilget the situation under control. as a healer dead is pretty much dead.

EQOA tho is the 1 game wich i enjoyed other classes in. Ranged DPS in the form of a necromancer and magician.

And support as a enchanter (buffing mesmerizing dps)

my enchanter was the ultimate mana distribution machine. I focused so much on intelect and wisdom thats i totally ignored my stamina. The result was that i had 800 hp on max level. Lady vox's aoe would instakill me i had to hide behind a ice pillar the entire duration of the fight and have people come to me to get their mana back :)

    but im derailing lol.

    Tank it is :D
