Gameplay: As of right now the two things to do in game are craft and slay the 5-8 mob types over and over again. Crafting isn’t intuitive at all. Had to pull up several guides to get any kind of grasp on it. Combat feels very clunky and not smooth at all.
These are the very first few lines of your review and they confirm my worst fears. They plan to charge a sub fee in less than 2 weeks for a game in such a state. At least I will get to see for myself shortly as an MMORPGer was kind enough to grant me an Alpha key.
They are supposed to have a big update this week, so lets see what happens. I'm not a big believer in the Jesus patch though.

It's in Alpha state my friend. Got to take it with a grain of salt. Keep in mind this isn't a triple A game at all. It's what I would slot in the Indie atmosphere. The possibilities and things to come is why I am continue to support it. Features and Mechanics will come.
That being said if you want everything right this moment it honestly going to be there. It's probably best to wait till whatever feature excites you gets implemented to jump on the ship at that time.
I'm biased though cause I am fan of the tabletop universe Pathfinder, and I can start developing my character right away once EE starts. I'm also part of a great settlement (guild) community called <Kabal> so I am already invested in that community so I have more motivation to play the game sooner rather than later.
They push out updates on a steady basis. And I don't think anyone has coined this the "Jesus Patch" as you coined it. It is a pretty big patch granted though.
Not trying to deter you from the game. You just seem to have the bar set high I would lower it and go into the game with that mentality instead.
I appreciate you taking the time to read my review though.

The problem is that this is the LAUNCH of a game which borrows much from EVE Online. Time = Experience and they are NOT wiping. So yes you can wait 18 months to join and be a year and a half behind in an open world PvP, territory control based game... but that doesn't sound like the ideal environment to start a new character either.
Edit to add: if this were a normal beta with the expected wipe I could better understand. Even if they charged a sub, those who paid would do so knowing their progress was lost at the end.

You could call it launch I suppose. Real "launch" isn't till sometime a year later after early enrollment ends. Yep there are no wipes and nothing stopping you from making a character paying your monthly sub and load in Day 1 of Open Enrollment real launch to have tons of xp to spend so long as you have the feat reqs met.
It's a choice. Paid Betas aren't anything new. They have laid out the road map pretty crystal clear so there is no hiding what you are getting yourself involved/invested in. The choice is yours to make on when you want to join us on that road.

If you launch a "beta", accept payments and carry all progress to the released game after "launch", then the day that so-called beta opens its doors is the de-facto launch of the game.
You can start paying now, or wait until launch day, but if you only start paying to play the game after it is launched, there will be people with 18 months of XP on your server. No pressure.

18 months of experience for those people in a timed based progression like eve?
I was intrested in this game.. not anymore tho lol
Alpha gets a wipe (and I believe started at the end of June and runs on most weekends.. not 24/7)
They are not calling the next phase "beta" but Early Enrollment and no your character progression (XP) will not be wiped when it goes to "Open Enrollment" in 2016...

Well to be fair they are giving lot's of keys out so it's pretty easy to get into the Alpha if you want without paying the $1000. I'm looking forward to seeing it this weekend.

1.) The Alpha Account is not the Same as an alpha invite. The Alpha Account cost 1,000 clams cause it comes with bells and whistles and you will continue to get bells and whistles through out the life cycle of the game that is why it has a high price tag with it.
2.) The Alpha Invites is just for alpha and comes with no bells and whistles just alpha access.

from what i have read
no more wipes after Early enrollment starts this month
A couple of personal opinions regarding the "early enrollment" (EE), time based experience and the possibility of later joiners to make a meaningful impact and enjoy themselves (from someone having followed this project for a couple of years):
There is not going to be much of a "game" in the beginning of the EE besides very basic functions such as basic combat and crafting so the people deciding to pay subscription fee from the start of the EE are in reality going to fund (to a significant degree) the development of the game. In (my estimation) 12-24 months we will know whether Goblinworks is able to pull off some of the key systems such as player controlled settlements, points of interest and territory control/siege warfare.
If this game is going to be a success, the (early) EE players are going to be an insignificant minority of the total player base. I would not be surprised if we would be starting with less than 10,000 total players. How many of those initial "founders" are going to still be playing the game after 24 months is anyone's guess.
The experience cost to buy more powerful abilities is not linear but it increases exponentially. This mean that you can buy a lot more "power" with the experience you are going to earn in the first few months of playing than you can later on (so you have diminishing returns of sorts for long time subscribers with a soft cap around 2 – 2.5 years).
The conflict in PFO is (at least if Goblinworks can live up to their promise) going to be more on a social structure level than on an individual character level. So the fact that some older organizations may have (a few) older and more experienced characters is unlikely to be relevant for the stuff that really matters (such as which settlement survives in a war and which perishes).
It is what it is. This is the only way this game can be made with the funding Goblinworks has been able to secure. Everyone has to decide whether they want to support the development by paying a subscription fee for what is clearly not the finished product (or depending on your point of view any kind of product at all) or whether they are more comfortable waiting to see how things turn out.
