Looking for a game me and my 10 year old son can play.

He watched me play Skyrim and thought killing a dragon was so cool.  He wanted to play with me. Any suggestions?  I've played since UO and most mainstream games up to SWTOR.  Things to keep in mind.  It's for a kid, fantasy setting, epic feel.

Simple, KingsIsle's Pirate 101.  It has a loose pirate theme but is more fantasy.  It is also fun for all ages, with child friendly chat systems.

It will require 2X subscriptions to access all areas.

Neverwinter Online? You also get to slay dragons there, and the controls are pretty simple (only a handful of skills to use).

Oh, and other big monsters like giants as well. =P

I would suggest Lord of the Rings Online. It holds a lot of respect from the kids because of the movie, and has a great story the two of you could share together. The community is top notch, probably the best online of any mmorpgs. There isn't any disgusting chat like in most of the games available today, and most folks tend to stay in the topic of the game when playing. The combat is simple enough for him but not boring, and there isn't anything to epic that the two of you shouldn't be able to conquer together as a team.

Death is nothing to us, since when we are, Death has not come, and when death has come, we are not.

I agree with lotro, another possibility would be GW2, tho i heard they screwed new player experience in the last update

Agree with the details Amjoco wrote about LotRO, but if you want to strictly play by the rules, it's worth mention that LotRO is pegi12 :) I'm not saying it isn't kid-friendly, actually I know parents who play with them - especially on festivals, because those have more laid-back and fun gameplay (like running around and picking flowers on the Spring one, or standing by the lake and fishing now at the Farmer's Faire)

If you want to fit into pegi limits, PioneerStew is right, Wizard 101 and Pirate 101 are directly designed for playing in a team with your kid, even have a family subscription for supporting the shared gameplay and both are fantasy-themed.

I play on Landroval RP server and I have dealt with nothing but respectful players and you never see vulgar/childish chat.

    What about Wizaard101?

A fantasy based child friendly game.

  • Azaron_NightbladeAzaron_Nightblade Member EpicPosts: 4,829
Isn't he a bit young to enjoy those stories? My buddy's kid didn't care much for stories at that age (not in games at least, and especially not text based ones which I assume Lotro has?), and would much rather fight stuff. That's pretty much why I made the Neverwinter suggestion.

It depends on how your kid plays games. If they find an area they like and stay/return there often, then GW2 is great for that as it scales your character to the zone, so you can always progress. If they like the idea of being part of a story and like LotR, then LOTRO is a great game to play.

PioneerStew mentioned Pirate101, which is pretty fun for both kids and adults. You have teams of characters that you manage, decent advancement whether you like grinding or leveling, and some cool storylines/quests. It's free to play but costs some money when you start getting more into it, but if you've been playing a month and still enjoy it, the price is worth it.

If they are more into hack-n-slash then Path of Exile, Torchlight 2 or Diablo 3 might be a good choice.

Honestly, I would suggest a split screen game on a console if you have one. I think a modern mmo that young might be too much instant gratification for a kid. I played UO when I was young. It was hard. I struggled. I grew. It was a massive journey and achievements were hard and I fought for them. Just remember that your kid is developing a lot of mental muscles at this age, and you should be weary how and which ones you train.
     I've been here a while...

How old are you if you have a son that's almost 90????

There are alot of family friendly mmo's you can try, You should research them as you know your son better than we do. And alot of the mmo's people are posting have bad communities in them. Unless your son will only play when you do then i would say ok to them. Wizard 101 and pirates 101 are two of the most well known family friendly games.

It's not quite dragons and pirates... but you two may like playing ToonTown Rewritten together. It's a fun game that involves playing a Toon and using "Gags" to destroy evil corporate robots :P

Open Beta starts 9/19/14. It is currently in "Semi-Open Beta" which involves a rather short queue system.

Note: This is a non-profit, FREE, remake of Disney's ToonTown Online. Usually around 1,500 "Toons" on in the prime time XD

    Enjoy!

Be careful of WIzard 101/ Pirate 101, or anything Kingsisle.

    1. They are a greedy, greedy company with incredibly underhanded tactics to suck money out of people. They are much, much worse than EA yet somehow fly under the radar.

    2. It is not family friendly, even though they advertise as such. There are barely any kids who play that game and the community is extremely volatile (the worst I have seen in all of my MMORPG experiences). People taunt, swear, call each other names all day long and the language filter does nothing to stop them.

    3. Kids do not play these games, even though you would think they do. The majority of the game is played by old adults who started playing these games to enjoy time with their children. However, the children lose interest in this game quick and what you get left with is an entire 'kid game' played by adults who got left behind by their children. The Adults stick around because they are addicted, but the children are long gone.

    4. Drama. Tons of it. Really creepy people play these games. People that are bordering on insanity, manipulation and pedophilia. I am not joking. The people in these games are nuts. The worst I have seen in any game.

I second SWTOR. Even though I don't like that game.

Final Fantasy XIV, Elder Scrolls Online, Guild Wars 2

Marvel Heroes is a good choice for kids and its fun to play for adults, plus its free.  Theres also a more kiddie Marvel game, the name of which escapes me now, that I've heard is good for kids.  It's free, too.

    Guild Wars 2, easily.

It's got a slightly cartoony style without being cartoony.. it's proper fantasy. Seems mostly child friendly. Should appeal to kids and adults alike. It's a great MMO to start someone on.

Rift is a safe bet to try as well if you want the more traditional style MMO... since it's free.

I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

GW2 very flexible play style, good story line, open world so you guys can just go off and explore together, easy controls.  Lord of the Rings would be my second one but it's a little more complex.  Rift.

I remember reading somewhere that Skyrim had a multi-player mod.  Might want to look into that but I hear it's a pain to setup.  Or perhaps look at RPG co-op games.

  • i suggest archeage with chat turned off, the other players get mad alot, or bots whatever they are, and say beyond fubared stuff. It's free to play with optional pay to win stuff but if you get in early you might be strong enough to with stand most repeated spawn kills, most spawn killing repeatedly raiding parties are going to be 2 - 5 players at most, but as long as Archeage is going to be around and with so much stuff to do at the beginning levels there will probably be little to no spawn camping repeated stuff for the first 3 months or so.  there's skype to chat if you're far away, you just need a mic.  or a password protected irc chat room.  i plan on playing the game without a guild though so I have more freedom but it starts in 4 days and 2 guys doesn't seem like much of a hold up so if you need an extra guy then feel free to send a private message, i don't cuss like a cat getting done either lol

So Archeage for a 10 year old if you turn off chat, don't join a guild, play it for free so you are limited to what you can do, and play solo. And since he is 10 his motor skills will not be developed to their fullest so he will be annihilated after level 30.  Sounds exactly like what the OP was looking for.

hehe, I think your heart is in the right place, but there are possibly slightly better more family oriented games for a father and his son to play.

Death is nothing to us, since when we are, Death has not come, and when death has come, we are not.

Well The Elder Scrolls Online is basically Skyrim Online and if the mature theme from Skyrim dosent phase him then you should be good to go.  The game has great content and much to do.  Ive been having a blast playing it with my relative we just play it little by little and explore its alot of fun and runs well on most rigs.
