Wind of Luck: Arena

Naval combat is becoming increasingly popular in video games recently. This is the sole focus of Wind of Luck, a downloadable game designed to kill opponents with ships on the open sea. This game features an interesting type of PvP. Even if one is not familiar with naval combat, the controls and features of this game are generally easy to learn. You choose from a list of provided ships and begin a battle with multiple people to a team and sink opposing ships. There are no rules to this game, only battle, which is what some players look for in games. With each victory, players earn money to buy new ships with better stats such as durability and speed. It is also possible to upgrade weapons like increasing available cannons and ammo. After just a few rounds, the game’s quality is clear and will only increase with more play time.

Just curious, as the name says, "Winds of Luck: Arena", does that entail that here is going to be another version that's not going to be arena PvP?

I heard the devs are currently working on a new MMO that is a vast open world but with the same type of gameplay. It'll be called Wind of Luck: Pirates.

this looks really cool, going to give it a shot. are the ships customizable like, flags/banners and stuff?

There are no available options like changing the colors or anything along those lines. The only customization available is adding different types of sails and weapons for more speed or damage output.

Downloaded and had a shot at it. The game clones nearly everything from world of tanks, so if you've played WOT, you'll instantly know the UI and "general" mechanics. (Lot of stuff is different in some areas as we're in boats and not tanks.)

Sadly I was unable to play a game, as only 8 people on EARTH are playing the game right now, and it takes 20 apparently to even start a match, so zero people are technically playing the game right now. Also there is only a european server atm, so ping for US players is going to suck badly if the game is fast paced. (Not that I would know, since no matches can be played.)

I'll check back in during US primetime (6pm ish) and see if the game has enough at all to even be played. I really might end up loving the game if it doesn't have the armor penetration mechanics, as that is why I HATED world of tanks, so if this game removes that I may end up having a new favorite game.

Oh and lastly, just browsing over the controls, I gotta say this game uses 3/4 of the entire keyboard, great for strategic gameplay for experts, a damn nightmare for a new player to learn, I wager it'd take me a month just to learn the 100 key functions you have to use, with the "}" used to command the captain to pick his nose. (The nose part is an exaggeration obviously, but there really are over 100 keybinds for every single thing you can imagine.)

To find an intelligent person in a PUG is not that rare, but to find a PUG made up of "all" intelligent people is one of the rarest phenomenons in the known universe.

A bit of correction. Now game is 3vs 3, not 10 vs 10 battles.
I have played a lot of battles, and despite I often see the same players, there definitely enough players for a battle. http://www.windofluck.com/famous-players.php at least shows that there are some playerbase :)

There aren't any armor penetration mechanics, and you basically have to use WASD, Numpad 6/8 for shoot broadside cannons (2 - for front cannons, if your ship have them) and mouse - a 20 keys map isn't so much needed :).
F1 brings in-game help that covers basics.

Most active hours are European prime time (4 am - 8pm atlantic time), but I know some american/canadian players and they are good with ping (game not so fast-paced, and you clearly see incoming cannonballs)

Some guys opened a skype chat for WOLA players, I can ask them to invite you if you interested.

    Here are some video tutorials

    Some sort of.
There are flags, different sail colors, and you can place achevement symbol on sails, if you have got corresponding achievement.

Ok, well the video on the game's main webpage said it was 10v10, and still does, they may want to fix that. I waited 35-40m for a match and never found one, but then noone at all was using anything below tier 3 ships, so even if I could play that match, I would be a floatsam anyway. Good to hear there is no bounce mechanic, that's at least one thing better than the competition. I found some video gameplay, and gotta say, the control mechanics are awful looking sadly, could be done much better, and easily. Also you listed only the most basic keys, you also have keys for... (takes deep breath) drop anchor /left/right, look left, right, forward, back, crew to sails, fire, cannons, something else, use special 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, use mortar, change sails, and like 20 others I can't recall off the top of my head. It was NOT user friendly. I did check in both during EU and USA primetimes, usa primetimes had between 4-6 people online, EU had between 6-10 people online, this may be a mmo that could claim the world record for "smallest" concurrent number of players online at a time. (Kinda funny given the world of tanks motif of the game systems.) Good to hear about the pacing, but I'm going to pass on this game, I'll check back and see if anyone plays it still in a few months. (I really hope people do, and the game fixes some of it's gargantuan issues like it's controls. I could use a good naval warfare game since archeage was so damn awful.) Sorry for lack of spaces, this damn website has recently gone bonkers and is conflicting with my software somehow preventing spacing between paragraphs.
