Best MMO of 2014 and its not even an MMO ?

Rush84Rush84 Member Posts: 62

Well im rank 24 now on Destiny so i have played it a lot and i have been playing mmo's now for over 10 years and this game seems to me to be a MMo regardless if bungie says it isn't

and furthermore its the best one i  have played in what seems to be a decade lol

It really lives up to the hype (for me at least) i have made some really good friends already and the community is awesome!!

You really need to play with clan/friends to enjoy the game to its potential though imo which is  good for me because im very sociable.

So for me i vote this game , not only game of the year but mmo of the year, ITS AWESOME  and there is no other game like it

I agree with you completely.  I've played al the mainline MMOs and I've never been a big shooter fan either, but this game has got better and better with every mission and every level.

I can only think that those giving it poor reviews just haven't played it enough to see all that it has to offer.

The movement, weapon-precision and ease of getting into the game are excellent, as are the graphics and sounds.

The really exciting thing for me is that with the number of sales they have made, they gave will continue to grow and be developed, with a lot to look forward to.

No doubt you'll get a hater or two on this thread, but I have to wonder how much of it they will have really played?

As I said, I'm not a typical shooter fan and enjoy the fantasy games most typically, but this game has got me gripped.

    how is this an MMO?

*its a serious question* as i dont have PS4 yet, and i do love the game so far ( by watching people streaming )

i plan to get PS4 next week and the 1st few games i will buy is Fifa 15 and Destiny, i love playing with 100 other players together, i dont mind that the raid can be only done with 5 people, but i do want to see 100s of players on the open world

    :D

    Thanks before

    So What Now?

This thread is moot to say the least.

Destiny is an always-online FPS game with multiplayer aspects. It has very little in common with the MMO's we play.

Enjoy the game for what it is, a very good shooter.

Well it's a Online persistent world multi-player shooter. To put it in correct terms.

I like the game a lot for what it is and just enjoy it.  That's all that matters in the end.

I just arrived on Mars last night and this zone is by far the most impressive one. It's Sparrow heaven! :)

( Tho Venus is also amazing. )

The problem in trying to define Destiny is that while it shares many aspects that are common in MMO's, it's missing others. There is a persistent shared world, explorable zones, robust progression system, dungeons, raids and even rep/gear grinds - all very common MMO features. On the flip side, there's no economy, player trading or in-game text chat. I think it's a matter of what someone chooses to focus on that makes them define it as an MMO or not. There's no denying the family resemblance, but Bungie is probably correct by avoiding calling Destiny an MMO although it often feels like one.

I cant play Destiny because i m not having a console, but i ll wait for a pc version of the game.

As for the mmo aspect, my definition is that if it fills my mmo needs. If i m playing Destiny and i don't feel the need to play other mmo's like WoW / Rift / WS / SWTOR etc, then Destiny is an mmo for me.

According to some on this site.. MMOs are any game that connects to the internet.

It seems very much like an mmo to me , better than most, exploring in this game is rewarding, strikes(dungeons) raids , events like in gw2, uncommon, rare, legendary loot, chests, lots of players, pve, pvp, a town hub(the tower) , mounts, post boxes, they have mentions allowi g trading at some point, rep grinds.. What more do you need lool, haters gonna hate

its not an MMO though, it is multiplayer, although you can play it entirely solo, but even in terms of multiplayer its only a few people at a time, at most 6. It is really more of an online shooter with optional multiplayer, and pretty much emphasis on the 'optional' multiplayer, but its a game you can add your friends to, if they happen to have the same platform as you at least. It is what it is. i think what you need to get your head around is that saying a game is not an MMO is not in any way a negative factor, the game does stand on its own merits, and it even works at launch which is something of a novelty in itself, but the OP is right to a degree, although whether its the best game of 2014 is a matter of opinion - the competition hasn't been great though so who knows, but it is regardless, not an MMO.image

Is it massive? Is it Multiplayer? Is it Online? It is then an MMO.

    er, No, sometimes and yes.

so no, it is not in fact an MMO, but why harp on about that one fact when really should just be concentrating on what the game actually does do rather than what it doesn't image

I agree with those saying that it's not an MMO in the true sense of the acronym. I think that where the line blurs nowadays is that the majority of MMOs out there don't really act as MMOs themselves. I mean if destiny put 100 people in the hub city, then you could classify it as an MMO? Yeah? I mean with shards and instancing galore, many people playing through MMOs solo, and content just not being tuned for multiple players, I've got to say, apart from a hub city filled with hundreds of people, Destiny does do a LOT of "MMO" things better than what current-gen MMOs do.

So, I agree, not really an MMO, but some of today's MMOs should take some pointers too.

MMO is just a term and it seems we can all argue til the cows come home.  The term was created in the industry and can mean different things to different people, as we've seen on this thread alone.

Setting aside terminology, people can already see what the game does and what it doesn't do - so surely play it on those merits (or not) rather than get hung up on what the label is.

There are often more than 6 players in the same world instance. Especially in Exploration mode.

Strike teams are limited to 3 People (and 6 for RAID / PVP). Tho I hope they will reconsider upping it to 6 in Exploration mode as well in near future.

That's just a group size limitation set by Bungie, just like with Dungeons in MMO's.

In The Tower there are often 20+ People in same instance and during prime time even more. Pretty much on par with other instanced MMO's.

    Good post.

Destiny does indeed do many "mmo things" better than multiple current-gen mmos.

And it does a lot of stuff that is common to both mmos and fps games much, much better as well.

With raids and unfettered PvP to come ... could be very interesting. A serious wake up call to the (often solo orientated) "mmos" that are left.

"Content"? It is still opening up.

People? The old interaction thing? Outside of hubs you see more people than you do in many "mmos". And as far as hub areas go in WoW people mostly only interact with a) their guild b) semi-interact with people they are put with to complete a scenario / dungeon / raid.

There is a discussion that could be had about how easy Bungie have made said interaction. Different issue though.

so how do you chat with other players if there is no text chat? you have to use mic? is that the only way?

    Massive budget perhaps image

When we look back in history, I believe the spirit of the term "massive" was in defining the amount of concurrent players you interact with in real time during regular gameplay.

Now some might like to twist the term to include lobbies, amount of content, map size (zone size) and such, but these type's of dynamic's existed at the time the term was coined and to the best of my knowledge were not included in the definition.

When I played my first MMO, many moons ago the term definitely meant that you could and would be playing with hundred's of people in a single game world at the same time. Your FPS was definitely wanting.

    Feel free to disagree image

I feel sad people have forgotten what 'massive' meant.   I guess only Koreans with their godly internet can still churn out games were 500+ players fight on the same map over a fortress at the same time.
