Not every single company has the capacity or knowledge to do so. EVE Online, some NCSOFT titles (published or developed), Zenimax, Blizzard... are there other titles or companies that use megaservers? I’m not sure if SWTOR would count.
XL Games reduced their 25 Korean servers down to 4 and then upped them to 7 recently (just a couple of months ago). If they really had the tech, they would have implemented that instead of doing the traditional server merge. Has TRION ever talked about megaservers for RIFT?

Blizzard don't use megaserver, swtor is not using megaserver. and all the servers in Rift which are in same region; for example eu; are interconnected like WOW's cross server so they are not mega servers.

again, how would you account for land?
I think you are suggesting that they just have "layers" or multiple instances. But that sort of defeats the purpose of having one world where everyone is vying for land and resources.

This right here.
One of the more exciting (to me anyways) parts of this MMO is that there is scarcity of resources...land being the most important.
Scarcity causes conflict and war which also IMO is needed in a PvP game. Otherwise...what are you fighting for?
One of the things that has ruined MMOs in the last 10 years is making sure everyone has everything which leads to boredom and no feeling of accomplishment which IMO is needed long term in a MMO.
A mega server (especially one like ESO) would remove the scarcity. Also having a great deal of group orientated content a mega server would ruin that aspect....just as it makes it very hard in ESO.
Now if they could increase the land mass in the megaserver with dynamically created land (has to be interesting and unique) in a certain ratio to players with everyone being in the same instance then that would be a cool experiment.
I dont see MegaServers, layers, channels, whatever other equal systems working in AA.
The core of the game is controling economy, trade routes, territorys wars, etc, wich include player interacting in a high level.
Using that tec only works if farms/housing was instance, trade routes were instance, zones were instance, sea were instance, etc, but thanks god thats not ArcheAge.
they could make mega servers. BUT they would need to have huge housing zones like in daoc. currently there is no land, and all the housing is in the pve and pvp zones so there is no room.
so you would have to port to a housing zone where its just tons and tons of houses and farms etc.
IMPORTANT: Please keep all replies to my posts about GAMING. Please no negative or backhanded comments directed at me personally. If you are going to post a reply that includes how you feel about me, please don't bother replying & just ignore my post instead. I'm on this forum to talk about GAMING. Thank you.
People keeps bringing up the shortage of land in AA related discussion but isn't this core of their game? shortage of land, shortage of gild star, those who control these ultimately control the entire game? i personally like the limited amount of land for housing and farming idea, in this very forum people keep asking for "living breathing world"; specially those who are asking for sandbox game, so let me ask : do we have unlimited space to build house in our living breathing world? who decides whether we can build house in our living breathing world? what kind of people have too much land and too much of everything in our living breathing world? you guys asked for living breathing world AA is giving you living breathing world. you want land? well your bad luck you could not log in to the game to claim a land and someone else too all of it. you are saying you are paying subscription? well you pay taxes in living breathing world too but do they let you have everything you desire? You sandbox people asked for living breathing world in your game, here is AA with living breathing world in your sandbox game. now deal with it.

Thanks for the clarification for WOW. I haven't played in such a long time. Totally forgot about cross servers.
And finally here is the link with the announcement, made on July 9th of this year, of the 3 new servers (which matches from the 3 on the right hand side on the status page).
What I want to know (if someone knows Korean) what does the bottom chart from the first link say? I found a couple of other links that ties to this. I want to know the specifics as to what XL Games did in detail. One important note that I found is that XL Games did allow free transfers for a period of time.

I have always said the reason I pay for subscriptions is to maintain (at least the illusion of) equal opportunity. But here, that went out the window on day 1.

Guilds controlling the entire game is one of the reasons why the game is failing in other countries. It's all fun and games thinking of a competitive open-world PvP where guilds can band together and gain in power via territory, resources, and gear until they "control the game", but what happens once a guild actually DOES that? No more land for the other players and it's impossible to gain in power to fight them because every time you try you get ganked. No one likes playing as a sheep to a pack of wolves for long...

Yep, i've played MMOs before, where this is the "endgame". Mega-guilds that span across multiple MMOs, with websites and resources, will end up controlling the server.
Megaservers won't work in AA, and neither would Overflows (such as in GW2). As others have stated, acquiring land is one of the main features of AA.

Guilds can't block other players from claiming land.
They can stop them from getting castles and land right around the castles, that's about it.
It's easy for Eve to do "megaserver" because space is boring and easy to procedurally generate, especially Eve space (as compared to games with planetary detail).
Archeage has detailed hand-built cities, you can't just "replicate that".
That said, games are increasingly looking toward runtime procedural terrain (and even architecture generation) so that kind of idea may not be far off.
EQN Landmark is an exciting example of client-side procedural terrain generation, though they choose to make fixed sized islands currently.

Maybe it is a proprietary technology/algorithm that they are charging an other companies/competitors an arm or a leg to use it?
Maybe, don't know, but if so they above sounded like a likely reason.
Originally posted by Tyranosin maybe a stupid question, but why don't they put all servers in one and make one huge server like Eve ..?
EvE actually has two servers.
There are MMOs with non-instanced player housing and player cities, real time combat - and single server for Europe, or single server for both Americas.
But what seems like single server for players - is actually server cluster, with different physical machines handling different parts of the game world. It is a technological challenge, something that has to be planned for from the beginning of development.
AA was in development since 2006 - and IMO it is a reason why it does not have megaserver. Such solution did not seem important enough back in 2006.

GW2 is NCSoft, they'd never sell that technology, especially not to XL Games (former NCSoft people).
More likely is, that ArcheAge was too far into development by the time XL Games learned of what ArenaNet had done with GW2's overflows.

GW2 doesn't have some super secret tech that nobody else understands.
The overflow server is just a common temporary instance of the game world. It CANNOT be used in AA, because of persistent housing.
The only way AA could have an "overflow server" is if it was an instance of some game region that didn't contain any housing at all.
In GW2, the game world on each server looks identical. In AA, the game world on each server is unique, because the player-built structures that fill huge parts of the world are placed differently on all the servers.

I was on the Dread server in Shadowbane. It always seemed like one guild had half the server as subguilds. People tried to unite to break them, but failed, even with GM help. So people left the server, and eventually there was no one left to fight, so the server died.
Comments
Because there is a finite amount of land in ArcheAge, unlike EVE which has limitless potential space because of the star systems.
The problem is simply that there are too many players and not enough servers at the moment. It will be a lot better in a couple of weeks.
hmm, yea gonna play in like a month hopefully alot people rq then and the queue is gone hehe
0
Im keep waiting for that RQ, allready see a few around but still not enouph to reduce queues
Never thought in my gamming life that one day i desire so much ppl quit playing my current mmorpg, i will regreat this one day, im sure i will

That is what worries me. XL Games just did the traditional server merge from 25 down to 4, although they recently opened up 3 new servers.
On June 2nd of this year XL Games announced that they were consolidating 25 servers down to 4.

Note the top diagram shows the 21 servers and the bottom arrow pointing to the remaining 4.
This is the current Korean server status (if you notice the 4 on the left hand side matches with the 4 from the previous link).
