WildStar: New State of the Game Addresses Player Concerns

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

The latest WildStar State of the Game letter has been published on the official site. In it, the team acknowledges that there are issues of grave concern to the playerbase, reassures the community that the development team is listening, and outlines several key areas that will be improved going forward.

Here are a couple of the big ticket items that you’ve probably already seen, or will see, in the game:

1. Attunement - The raid content was designed to have players actually play it. We adjusted the attunement process to help get players into raids, where the real challenge is. Getting in is one thing, being prepared is another. We are currently implementing a training dungeon that will help train and prepare players for the epic challenges that await them in our dungeons and raids. I want to stress that we’re not nerfing raids, we’re just giving you the tools to succeed when tackling them.

2. Elder Game Itemization – We got a ton of testing and feedback on the early leveling content in beta stages, as that is what gets tested the most. Since launch we’ve tried to respond as quickly as possible to the concerns about elder game items based on direct feedback from the thousands of players playing the live build, something that got little interaction before launch. We’ve been making positive changes related to rune slots and how desirable the hard content rewards are and we’re not close to finished yet.

3. PvP – Early PvP systems incentivized toxic behavior and play patterns. While updates to the gear and matchmaking system have gone a long way to mitigate this, expect further updates and adjustments in the future.

Too little too late, the ADHD crowd has moved on.

Carbine has let down a lot of players, with bug infested patches, mega-servers slated 7 weeks from now, and Drop 3 release in NOVEMBER. They still haven't fixed balance issues or addressed the Warplots fiasco. I can not say in all honesty that the game is worth the subscription fee. This is level of inexcusable incompetence even if it were change to a F2P game.

By ADHD you mean people with families and job? i have been in few guilds for 2 months that i played WS and guess what was the average age of the players? 30 to 40. Al of them busy with work and families who have no interest in carrying around the tag 'hardcore'.

No I am refering to the group of people that jump on new MMO's play them for a couple of weeks till they burn out, start complaining and move on, or what I call very short attention span or patience.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder - has nothing to do with familes/jobs/age etc.

    And woooooshh!!!!

I know what ADHD means. I was being sarcastic because you assume that Wildstar empty servers is due to ADHD crowd leaving. When in reality majority of players who i knew quit were not ADHD.

These look like good improvements. However, i don't know how much time left Carbine has to turn the tide. They need to implement said fixes and the mega-servers ASAP, before WoW's next expansion goes live. It is certain that a number of players will return to Draenor and although they may not stay there for long WildStar absolutely can't afford to loose more subscriptions, even temporarily. The EU realms bar one are empty and rumor has it that a second top tiered guild is about to follow Voodoo's exodus.

We'll see how I feel after playing some non-MMO games. I gave a bunch of money to Steam and hardly played the games I got in return. If they can fix the combat so it's not too busy and the game so it doesn't feel like work and have a better system of fast travel, then we'll see.

Ok I guess I have to spell it out for you as you cant read between the lines, I am not saying everyone that quit has ADHD, I am saying their behaviour shares alot of similarities with ADHD. *sigh*

I dont really care or even mention why the rest of them left, but its a well known fact that theres a big crowd of people who pick up new MMO's, play them intensively for a few weeks, burn out and move on to the next new one.

Ok i will say it in very few words this time... 'you were generalising'.

And you were using anecdotal evidence to counter his generalization. Good job both of you. Great thread.

people who don't want to play an inferior version of a 10 year old game = ADHD crowd

    good to know

Then please enlighten me the correct way to approach generalisations?

He used ADHD crowd as a reason for saying 'too little too late'. I simply reminded him that there is large portion of people who quit due to the so called hardcore end game. And not because they suffered from ADHD.

If they follow Arenanet's scheduling this game will be 2 years old before they even consider that there's a balance issue, or design holes in progression. I don't hold much hope considering that NCsoft has too much control over both of these games.

The more I've thought about this today the more I believe NCsoft is just gonna pull the plug. My concern is are they just lying about a drop in Nov to pull in a few sub payments, then cut it . Some kinda poop storm is brewing .

It's damn clear WS will not make on Subs anymore.

Maybe NCsoft will let them give F2P a shot, but that will just be a huge money grab for a couple months.

Not good, not good at all.

Not saying you're wrong here but, how exactly do you know it cant make it on subs as it is? Where are you getting numbers on what it takes to run the game and the income they are currently getting?

Personally, I doubt its losing money as when that happens you can bet the plug is pulled instantly or they immediately go into damage control to reverse the problem, neither of which have happened yet. It is MORE likely that its running a a profit currently, just not a very big one which may result in a closure anyway (see city of heroes).

One thing to keep in mind is that they seemed to sell a largish number of CREDD in the first month. There was way too many available and rediculously low prices - enough that people like me managed to get ~20 of them - and I never even leveled to 50.

CREDD allowed them to get premium monthly payments (20 bucks instead of 15) from people that otherwise pays for their subscription normally (or didn't pay at all). Although this isn't a longterm solution (influx in credd revenue must have dropped as much as subscription income I gather), it might have given them some leeway in actually getting the game to a stable enough playerbase.

I still suspect that they are in major trouble based on the populations I've seen on my server using an addon that scans using the /who command. The number of people detected in a single /who is limited to 50 people. On my server in the evening I've never seen it hit that limit. That's crazy.

They're gonna wait to release their 'big' drop of patches and content just before the release of Warlords of Draenor.

NCSoft should take charge after all, those in charge clearly don't know what they're doing.

Do it in smaller parts, especially the fixes, content being delayed isn't as bad.

I been running guilds for 16 years and yes this does happen, my guilds average game was 5-7 years back in the day, now ist like 30 -90 days... So it happens because people leave .... Not always due to a bad game people find reasons to leave..Again, this is why MMO's will be gone in 5 years... Watch and see.

Not a single word on performance. I guess it's just SUPPOSED to run like shit. WildStar is officially off of my list of games I will ever consider returning to.

Ok, although referring to the crowd ADHD has a certain descriptive accuracy, over here on the left side of the pond we refer to these kids as "content locusts."

Is there larger trouble, in general, for NC Soft West? There have been no updates for a U.S. release of Blade and Soul in a long time. Guild Wars 2 seems to be neglected, no plans for expansion, WvW design issues and lack of developer interest, fading community interaction and information. It's reminding me of Mythic all over again.

"3. PvP – Early PvP systems incentivized toxic behavior and play patterns."

My opinion, obviously, but this should read "PvP systems incentivize toxic behavior and play patterns."

I beta tested the game, never grabbed me, I knew it had it fans and who knows it may get enough to hang on for them, but I am not surprised the game is not doing well, had a lot of features but no meat on the bone..

Solely based on NCSoft's past treatment of western developers, I'd say you may be right. Carbine was absolutely bat-shit insane to sign anything involving them. I've heard of deals with Lucifer turning out better.

AN' DERE AIN'T NO SUCH FING AS ENUFF DAKKA, YA GROT! Enuff'z more than ya got an' less than too much an' there ain't no such fing as too much dakka. Say dere is, and me Squiggoff'z eatin' tonight!
