What makes you want to play an MMO?

I know that I'm asking a generic question, one that's probably asked a lot on here.

However, I'm currently doing some market research for an upcoming indie MMO currently in pre-production- we're hoping to get an Alpha Demo out just after Christmas.  I'm not here to advertise it or shove it down your throats- all I have are Questions!

So I'm just going to jump straight in:

When looking for a new MMO to play what draws you in?

The ability to have a virtual life in it with optional or no pvp, a well fleshed world that you can be anything in, even just a fisher, cook or beggar if you want and having an environment and avatars that don't hurt to look at helps.

What do you like when it comes to UI/HUDs? Got any examples of what you would call the perfect UI experience?

None are perfect, just prefer unobtrusive to my window of the game itself with the ability to move it to where I find it most comfortable.

What do you hate about MMOs that you wish they would just stop doing? (Just so we know what we can try to avoid!)

Stop forcing the group/guild aspect, I live in a neighbourhood but you don't see anyone insisting that we all sit and hold hands to do stuff, instead make the game so that you want to play together to make winning your objective easier or for greater rewards/achievements.  ie.want to get that area opened up, then have it tied to a large percentage of the server contributing to it whether with mats, gold or completing some other task/s.

Make it a truly player versus environment contest instead of a gank your neighbour to prevent them from getting there first.  For pvp, make it a true faction against faction, no infighting sanctioned and anyone wanting to just create havoc(probably schills from the other side anyway) gets booted from society and any benefits to belonging to it(no npc's, no land, lesser rewards from hunting, etc)

What is your all time favorite MMO, and why.. if you can explain it in words.

UO, my first love, but it did allow for pretty much everything a person could want to do in a virtual world.

Now if you want to know what I would love to see as a mmorpg, it would be based on a book like Clan of the Cave Bear by Jean Auel.  Everyone starts out as a savage(think Broud in the beginning of the story) and slowly learns how to not only survive against the harsh reality of the environment but also with the different societies you come across as you travel the world searching for your own place in the world.

You learn crafts/trades from the peoples you come across, including specialty type things like fine leatherwork, weaving, basketweaving, carpentry, stonework, metalwork, tattooing, cooking, hunting methods(new weapons learned, sling, bow, dagger, axe etc), cooking and alchemy(new recipes learned and the ability to process new materials), the list could go on forever.

Once you find a place you want to settle and begin your own tribe, a new world of festivals and mass hunts etc will open up along with housing(only tents for shelter while traveling).  Pvp could even find a good place here as tribes could battle for certain rights/privileges.  The festivals would be the only time you can trade with other tribes or have members from them join yours, there would be group hunts for large beasts(mammoth, whales, etc) and competitions among the different crafts/trades etc.  with ingame achievements/prizes awarded for those who complete them.  Anyway, you get the gist of it.

I believe that's all I have for now, but I'm sure more will follow.

Thank you for your time, and I'm looking forward to your answers!

Just revisiting the discussion.  I agree.  It's just distraction and something to bog down computer performance.

A really, really, really big map to play on.

    No bullshit

Proper environmental effects, like rain, proper snow etc. Preferably seasonal changes.

Not the bs rain seen in Arma/DayZ.

Environment! That was another question I wanted to ask about.

How many gamers here actually like that? I personally enjoy weather changes if the environment calls for it such as snow on a snowy mountain, but I think a whole season change would be pointless unless materials and mobs, possibly even quests change along with it- that's going to be a lot of work, but could create an amazing immersed game.

I agree.  It's just a distraction otherwise that may bog down computer performance.

P2P is a must, been playing P2P MMO's since 1994 and never looked back.   F2P MMO's with P2W tagged to them is stupid and a waste of time, it always feel like you need to dish out money on a cash shop to actually be good at something.

One MMO that I really love / loved is Atlantica Online, it's so unique but at the same such a major money sink, 1,000$ on the cash shop in a year is no where near enough to be anywhere good, hell, it barely gets you started.

FF14 : ARR was another title that I really like but the RNG is so awful and the grind sooooo boring that it feels like EVE-Online but on land.

You want the perfect MMO? Just look at Atlantica Online, remove the stupid P2W cash shop and make it P2P 5-6$ a month and boom you destroy WoW and pretty much everything else related to gaming in existence.   The main complaint about P2P is that 10~15$ a month is too much, so let's say FF14: ARR has 3mil subs, if they drop the sub fee from 15$ down to 6$ they'll have 15mil subs in a heart beat, do the math. Enough profit that you don't need to destroy the game with a game breaking cash shop enhancements AKA P2W.

The perfect MMO is so easy to create, but all the stupid devs besides Blizzard, look at short term profit instead of long term profit. Example : Star Citizen, nuff said.   Imagine if WoW was 5$ a month...  WoW haters will be QQ'ing for another century.
