No T5u upgrades for mirror ships But...

I heard you can use alternate skins on certain ships .Is this true?
I kinda had my heart set on a upgrade for my mirror assault cruiser,but no such luck.
I was told i could buy the refit assault cruiser and simply select an alt skin.
can it really be that simple??
