People complain about "open world gank fests" but if there wasn't open world pvp.. it would get extremely boring extremely fast.
Are you hoping the devs will see your complaints and change the game to "Life is Rainbows" ?
They prefer fishbowl style dungeons/raids in which they spam the same button over and over again until the boss dies to the unpredictable nature that is PVP. Imagine if the boss just willy nilly attacked whoever in the raid just for kicks... it would be exactly like open world PVP. But you can't handle that, you prefer your safe sure bet style of combat... which really isn't combat at all, unless you consider attacking peeps who've had a lobotomy, combat.
Not even in the general ballpark. I can think of mulitple problems with what you are saying.
I think the most apparent, obvious thing to look at when using UO as a basis for why PVP is and can be successful, is by comparing it to EQ, Anarchy Online and other PVE centric games that came out right after it. These games stole the steam from UO.
Even the PVP'ers much touted DAOC's traditional server only had battleground PVP and New Frontiers...they had a seperate PVP server for all out slaughter.

I think many of us who have decided to skip the game are not trying to make a moral statement, market prediction or flaming heat. We are just saying no-thanks.
Additionally many of us LIKE the idea of PvP we just dont like the idea of non-consensual pvp.

Here is the problem with this game and anyone can demonstrate this if you have the game and the time to do it.
Make a sword, or a piece of armor. See how long it takes you. Now compound that time with a full set of armor, does not have to be metal, can be just leather. Add the weapon time in and now you understand the difficulty with replacement when it comes to full loot loss. Sure, banding together will lesson the time somewhat, but you are still talking a significant amount of game time.
New equipment has to be easily made and readily available for a game like this to work. Not happening in this game ATM. Full loot pvp and long complicated crafting just do not mix unless of course the producer intends to do most of the development and server funding themselves.
Here is what happens on a server like this. Initially everyone starts out looking for others to group with. Works for a while, then one of the groups gets very aggressive, they take out some of the smaller groups and now people are thinking, probably better to join them rather than suffer the same fate. It ends up with the aggressor group being the dominate entity on the server and most of the others just leave and eventually the server dies.
I have seen this happen time and time again. I kind of naturally gravitate to pvp servers in games that have them.
And of course we have not even addressed the battle the game masters will have with the cheaters who will inevitably ply their versions of game play on the unfortunately souls who run into them. Go look at the problems Trion is having with them in ArchAge.
I would love to see an indie developer come along and make a good pvp game, but they have to be aware of how these games are played and come up with solutions to counter what usually ends up happening.
... Full loot pvp and long complicated crafting just do not mix ..
Exactly.
There is nothing wrong with crafting games, in fact I like them, but complex crafting games with progression in a pvp open loot game is well...stupid to be frank.
Ultima Online got away with full loot PvP because crafting was simple and replacing your gear was easy. And even Ultima Online needed a nonPvP mirror world to save it anyways in the end (Trammel).
I am still wondering why so many people who love PVE and meaningless pvp where you just respawn as a penalty are still talking in a thread about a game ( that mentioned multiple times) that is full loot open pvp game.
What gives? You guys are trying to change the game, yet if you want to play the game you need to change you style.
Learn to pvp and get good/survive or join a zerg or get rich and hire people to protect you, it really is that simple.
And people who say this game is soley based on PVP Is wrong, and your whole concept of what a true sandbox is as well.
Some people want to survive in a brutal world as a trader, spy, or a explorer of resources, or a terraformer, or to specialize in a crafting area, some want to be the master Hunter of PVE or the protector of carebears( most of you, no offense), the solo pvper, the best group at pvp, fighting outnumber pvp, mercs, pirates, bounty hunters, whatever.
This is what a full loot open pvp games offer, pvp without meaning is meaningless hence it dies out and gets old, proven time after time.
No full loot open world open pvp sandbox game has been really successful besides to a niche because the dev team are small and no backers, or they are just idiots and steer the game in a wrong direction.
THERE IS FACTS THAT MASS AMOUNTS OF PEOPLE WANT ONE THAT IS DEVELOPED CORRECTLY, this is proven from past launches of such games. Just no developer have done it right.
Listen stop wasting your life trying to change the game, and either MOVE ON or adapt to the game, holy crap, this reminds me of babies asking for candy but they didn't get their flavor. YOU ARE GROWN MEN, go out and get your favorite flavor yourself don't blame the candy company who made the flavor you hate.

for the 3rd time having me explain this. It started with a simple response to the topic of 'oh wow this game looks great but I am sorry the PvP rules seems a little harsh for me so thanks anyway'.
THAT WAS IT...
everyone else then started in saying we are trying to change the game, don't understand, don't see that pvp is very popular and on and on and on.

at least that is my take anyway
I am trying to think what makes you think I was directing this towards you and not the other 50 people who posted here uhhh? lol But if I was you, I wouldn't be wasting on a time that isn't your cup of tea, I mean I don't post on WOW forums and telling them what makes me dislikes it, I simply read what the game features and move on if it aint my cup of tea.
But either way, good luck to you bro, hope you find your game that YOU are looking for, as I am still searching for mine and this is one of them in my top list
Originally posted by Zackxm Could you create your own server and then only allow yourself and friends on it?
Yes you can and password protect as well.
But will that last?
I was under the impression that the current system is only in place until they can get their full MMO thing working, and you're forced to join the gankfest.
Something which I found a damn shame, because it sounds like the kind of game I could've enjoyed otherwise, provided there's actually things to do besides building and PvP. I haven't heard much beyond those two though.
For now I'm sticking with 7 Days to Die, which has all the features LiF has, minus the ganking.
I would love to see a medieval/fantasy game like this. But I'm going nowhere near it as long as it includes open PvP, full corpse looting and stat loss upon death.
Here's to hoping someone will eventually come up with a more PvE centered version.
My SWTOR referral link for those wanting to give the game a try. (Newbies get a welcome package while returning players get a few account upgrades to help with their preferred status.)
