I like that one too. I think it's the music in the other one; Dinah Washington's This Bitter Earth with Simon Poole's editing and the visuals is just a potent combo for me.
I envy those of you that find value and enjoyment in this game. Sadly, my time in beta with it was the quickest out of any MMO I've ever either beta tested or played at launch. One hour is all it took. And looking several months post launch, and now a few years...for me it was the right one. It has the absolute worst combat system in the MMO market and unless you are a sandbox MMO, combat is nearly everything. Rift and WoW have better combat. At least the animations in WoW are fluid and responsive. Not to mention you use more than two abilities. I watched several videos of gameplay...everyone had the same machine gun that fired three rounds. Most people then switched to a mechete of sorts when the mob got close. It was just that....3 rounds, mechette, back and forth.
And Im not a WoW fanboy. I don't even play WoW, partially because its combat is too slow...and Im here saying WoW has better combat that TSW.
But again, envy to you guys that enjoy it because the them of the game is like no other. Wish it would have been made better. I would love to get into a paranormal MMO with an actual fear factor. The sounds and ambience look great.
This mirrors a lot of what I think about the game. I feel like I should like this game, but if I had to choose between this game and say, WoW, or this game and plenty of single player games, I'm going to choose the other option. They have gotten the load times down so the game isn't a burden to play, but that's apparently not enough.
I think the quests are good, better than most, and the pace of progression seems fine. The environments and general theme of the game seems really cool too. The graphics, while not the best, are not bad. Certainly "good enough". Strafing left or right looks pretty weird, but it's something I can get over.
I am reluctant to even bring this up, but for me, it really comes down to the combat. With RPG combat, games can tweak two difficulty factors. Either setting up the character for combat can take time, or the combat itself can require a lot of paying attention. TSW chose to do both. Players have to select skill combinations to be effective, along with gear, as well as combat that is designed to be a challenge. It's too much. For someone (like me) who wants to focus on the quests and the stories, finding out you've borked your character with AP/SP selections is a real disappointment. The subject matter of the game doesn't seem to be something with a broad appeal, and the combat mechanics just reinforce this.
That said, given that Funcom is refocusing on mid-tier gaming and multi-platform stuff, maybe it's OK that TSW isn't going to have a broad appeal. For people who want challenging content and game play, TSW provides it. The reasons I don't like the game more (combat) seem to be reasons that other people really like the game. *shrug*
The learning curve is steep, no doubt about it, and I think most don't have the patience to stick with it and figure things out. I remember my first build being pretty darn weak, and getting owned by some pretty lowbie creatures in the first zone. I figured at that point that I was doing something wrong, but it was before I started reading up on the forums, so at that point I switched over to some of the pre-built decks in the game for blade/chaos (Martial Artist I think was the first -- this was even before they created the simpler starter decks). As soon as I switched over I noticed a pretty significant improvement in my combat -- was downing stuff much more quickly.
After that I really started getting into the active/passive synergy stuff and the improvement was huge, and I started experimenting a lot more with the passives from other weapons. I actually got to the point where I was having fun with the combat, swapping decks around and trying different strategies against different mobs/bosses. Even in my early days I was never a 1-1-1-2 spammer, but I did have a rotation down, with the occasional special ability (Chaotic Pull is one of the more fun abilities, by the way... )
Which makes me think -- maybe we should start posting some of the more fun builds on these boards? It may just be that folks never got to experimenting, and putting some out with some reasoning behind how they work might help. Sure, there's a ton of TSW build sites now, but maybe some of us have some cool combos we've created along the way worth posting here.

I really really don't see the point of this complaint... Anyone who decided to start with an assault rifle got the same starter model gun, so? Any noob character with (the same) AR is firing a 3 round burst. Yes, it's called "Safety Off", the very first AR ability you get when you choose to start with an assault rifle. And yes, most people like to use a melee weapon to fight at melee range, and a blade is a popular choice. What is your point?
Yep, it just makes me wonder if most people just didn't get past those first few starter abilities to a better set of combos. A lot of people thought (again, bad tutorial here) that one weapon can work fine, not to mention no clue about active/passive combos.
1. Because for 3 years nobody said "u no english".
2. Because your Char is Forever.
3. Because is kinda fun when you put wrong glyph in wrong talisman.
4. Because there are 9 dungeons, and you are ready just for 4 of them (ok, 5) [ok, all] {ok, none}
5. Because there are no updates
6. Becouse updates breakes yours build.
7. You get lucky!
8. Becouse of events, one by one.
9. Becouse of combat animations.
10. Becouse....wait...10... jaki to numer?
Take the game as is. It's not part of the best MMO's because of clunky combat/animations, lazy small world design, repetitive grindy content, non-smooth GUI, buggy client, long loading times, inbalanced PVP, no world evnts except during Halloween and the anniversary etc. etc. The list why TSW isnt the best MMO around can be long.
Players who do research will know it. Fanbois will ofc ignore it. You buy TSW because you are interested in a MMO with modern day horror setting with some nice cutscenes. It wont be epic. It wont take you on a journey. It will give you some nice quests with interesting backgrounds. It's not WOW, it's not GW2, it's not SWTOR.
Check it out if you see it on Steam at discount price. It's worth every penny. Full price of $29,95? Then know what you are buying, because TSW is a game like EVE Online, it's not for everyone.

I don't see how creating threads related to TSW builds could hurt. It certainly does seem to be an aspect of the game where more discussion could be beneficial, especially to new players, like the people in the MMORPG.com Cabal. :-)
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.

Chaos/Blade for Tank, AR/Blood for Heals, Pistol/Shottie for DPS. You can swap your secondary for sitiuations where you need more DPS as a tank or healer.
I'd advise you to go check this site: forums.thesecretworld.com/. There are quite helpfull threads in there which form the cookie cutter builds you want.
No need to start your own build thread if you want to make a build that does a proper rotation (yes 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 2, 3 spam) with at least 3k DPS.
One positive point about the game that I think has not been mentioned - the level of developer interaction with the playerbase. It's refreshing to see the game director respond to player threads and questions. It's nice that they support player run events and provide extra rewards.

not you again....dang.
Anyway, you obviously didnt play the game very extensively. those are 3 of about 20+ builds for different places in different situations and with those builds are several different weapon combos....hammer/blade, fist/chaos, hammer/shotgun, full elementalism..etc etc.
Wanna do the easy thing and use other people's MANY builds, there is a comprehensive list here: tswdb.com

Oh my, it's the guy who is calling everyone who is critisizing TSW an inexperienced player, haha. You got PVE and PVP. For PVE the builds are set. That you need specific counter abilities for some bosses dont make it flexible. Don't make me start on PVP. Buildwise it has more flexibility but... lol.. Yeah, not gonna go there.
Those dungeons are a laugh as well. So broken exploiting it was considered normal to finish it. Then they threw a fix in and now 50% of the dungeons arent even played. Yeah, keep it coming.
The "solution" for lairs is just funny. "Wait, are lairs a grind? No, it isnt! We will put an extra boss in, so more people do the lairs! Why cant they see its fun?"And still nobody does lairs.
Scenarios are grinds youre better off doing solo or duo (depending if you do group elites or group NM) and the aegis is just another cushion of DPS to remove.
You know i can blast you with solid reasoning why this game is average at best. TSW should take a look at how GW2 does game mechanics.

My vote would go for this one http://youtu.be/4A4i12-yhAA

Heh. I liked this one too -- first I ever saw: http://youtu.be/lsLXQEeLiI0
In all of them I especially like that the vibe goes against the typical heroic grain, and yet it somehow feels pretty darn heroic.

I self identify as a monkey.
