LOL. I spend SO much time on character customization, it's pretty bad. :P

Mostly this. There are a few good games with customization, but CoH I think, still wins. I'd spend hours just creating the character, and then hardly play them lol.

I've never had more alts than I did in that game.

SWTOR's getting pretty good at it these days too with all the different pieces from the Cartel market, FP/Op drops and different factions, but it's still far away from catching up to CoH.

That site's all about making custom looks. It's always fun to see some of the cool things people have come up with.

Wanted to post a shot of my Guild Wars 2 elementalist in her dungeoning gear.

Edit:  for some reason I'm having difficulty posting an image.  Can someone help me so I can make sure I'm doing it right?

Character creator was a huge downer in TSW. Sometimes I'd wish to create a melee bruiser character, but you lack the option for muscular character, so I have to pick ranged since it just feels stupid running around as some wimp with a 2h hammer.

Probably the number one reason I quit playing TSW after 18 months or so.  While it was possible to get an acceptable looking character, the decision for everyone to have the same body type to reduce lag was a poorly chosen Devil's bargain.  I could play a fat bounty hunter in SWG. For me, currently, ESO is the best on the market n this regard.

I'm satisfied with ESO's character creator and also with the variety of armor I can craft, only thing I'd like is to use some of the lower tier armor at higher levels and upgrade it to be on par with stats of the high level armor, but it's fine since there's so many different styles anyway. The game runs very well too with all the different sized characters.

Some of the sliders in ESO's char creator could have a bit more impact on the character, but overall it's good.

Visuals matter in video games. If they didn't, then we wouldn't play video games, we'd play pen and paper games due to the depth and freedom of the gameplay.

However, people have different thresholds of acceptable visuals.

On the "post page", you can click the "Add Image" icon, (farthest right). It will ask you for a web link. I use imgur.com. Others use Photobucket or other pic hosting sites. Did that help?

    [EDIT]
PS: I think the "pixel width" of the boards is about 600. Larger than that and you get the handy "scroll bar" underneath :)

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.

I always thought it would be interesting to see a fantasy MMO employ a similar customization system to CoH.

Neverwinter being made by Cryptic, imagine if they had done that instead of the normal gear system? Oh man... that would have been crazy.

It just would not work. Fantasy MMOs are "gear based." Your armor/weapons change often. CoH had no gear. Your costume was the same from level 1 to 50, with 3 more costumes added into the mix :) The costume did not affect the character at all, like fantasy MMO armor would.

The only "loot" we got was "Influence" (money) and "Enhancements" (power slot modifiers). Not until later did "crafting materials" drop. Can you imagine the mindset of usual MMO players with no gear loot? The crying would reach whole new levels :)

Those who post above that only gameplay matters and looks don't, are, one feels, people who just want an action/combat game along the lines of Unreal Tournament. Even then, I think if you gave them a stickman avatar with high stats, they would not be 100% pleased. For anyone who looks on MMOs as role-playing games, then of course looks matter, and the more customisation you have the better.

EVE character creation, best character creation :-)

One of my favorites for Character Customization is The Secret World.

There are zillions of options for character and clothing, and sine the appearance of the clothes has nothing to do with armor value you can dress your character any way you want.

I'm currently playing The Elder Scrolls Online and It has a good character creation system as well.

    Age of Conan is Good.

Guild Wars 2 is not so great as far as character style or animation.

Nice pics, Mike. I found myself wondering, though, "How much did those outfits cost you?" :)

I still carry a torch for AION, and TERA's texture work on the armours was to die for. Simply amazing work.

Far as I am concerned, gameplay trumps graphics any day of the week!
