My WoW guild is full of a buncha peeps I don't know, with notes that are like a teenage boy wrote them (lots of swearing), everyone in the bank was dancing (not one of the party poppers.. like LITERALLY dancing)....
Ugh... 15 bucks wasted... I should just write myself a note to permanently ignore that account. It hurt.
The weirdest reasons you guys quit MMOS over... i know someone like you who quit ESO over naked dances and human centipede. Who cares really? if i start quitting MMOS over such minor annoyances i won't have one online game to play.
Now if you quit over rampant hacking, cheating or botting i would understand but this?
If they can go from 7.4 to over 10 million, then yes, this will indicate that WoW is growing again, otherwise it's still declining over the long term.
WoW never had a "pre expansion bump", at least not one that was in a press release...all the numbers you are quoting are post expansion launch, except Today's (the xpac is still a month away).
Expect the number to jump a LOT once the xpac actually hits. Put your hopes of WoWs collapse on hold till then good sir
what? every pre-expansion is a bump in subs , to check the "incoming" updates , talent changes and preparing for expansions....
i always comeback in those patchs , but no this one tho :P , happy waiting for FFXIV 2.4 :P
(p.d will probably try the expansion on the long run but not on release >.>)
Ill pass...no matter how much u beat a dead horse with a stick its still a dead horse......games crap since Cata and there is nothing that can save it...Blizzard needs to put the sick horse down and start something new....

And why on earth would Blizzard do that when they're making HUGE money from WoW still?
I got there last expansion didnt stay for a week, this time not going get there expansion, as still a good game, just grown out of it. And still dont like there pvp system.

Interesting considering int he last couple weeks WoW gets more RESUBS than some games have in total subs in their entire lifetime.
In little over a months time WoW will be 10 years old. It's been more than a decade since we posted our first impressions from the closed beta.
a bump of 600.000 subs is nearly twice the population of Iceland. That is crazy for such an old game. I have to admit, I want to see the improved character models, UI improvements animation improvements as well.

Of course they aren't officially labeled "pre-expansion" numbers , but that doesn't make it any less true. Just look at the chart. The evidence is right there. There is a rise in subscriptions for every pre-expansion patch, and a steady decline post-launch since Wotlk. The numbers don't lie. WoW is declining each year. As i said, if WoW is growing, it would have to pass 10 million subs again. If that chart doesn't indicate a collapse, then i don't know what else to tell you.
I have no intention of going back, I also said that with mop until I found a ce in a throwout bin 3 weeks after it released played it 3 months did a few raids got my rated pvp fix and took off. So who knows maybe I will pick it up.

Well, it sounds like Ikeda was more disappointed with how far the player base in his guild had declined in terms of maturity than any real issue with the game itself.
Perhaps looking for a new guild would be a better answer than quitting the game totally.
On a note related to the OP, my son who has been a long time WOW player (since launch) but on a recent hiatus plans to return for the expansion, so like others said, expect the numbers to go up by at least 1 more.

A 200k drop in Q1; an 800k drop in Q2 and no expansion in Q3 .... the possibility of more people taking a holiday + people not returning until October/November was, I believe, very real. And another drop would have sent a "WoW is dying" message - however big the Q4 bump from WoD was.
The goal now will be to finish the year with "7.4M" subs. Headlines like these matter - especially to big companies / major products. And the forthcoming patch schedule will reflect this.
And I believe it will be an challenge. Once a long term subscriber leaves then - even if they come back - they are more likely to leave again once they have played through the new content. I think that will be the new worry.
Anyone who hasn't played WoW in a while because it's too easy, I suggest you give it a try. The new update completely changed the dynamic of everything in my opinion. Difficulty was upped
Not surprised, they promised a lot with this expansion. Talk of trying to bring back the feel of tbc. Also stat changes, new story back to the gritty WoW that we know, along with other things. I will be trying it out hoping it won't be like how i felt after 2 - 3 months of MoP.
I would say wait and see after 3 months to get an idea.
Originally posted by Mr.SeriousGuy and LOL has 27 million active players at peak this month . sure LOL is a moba not a mmorpg but if your just going to throw numbers around like it means something it puts it into perspective . alternately 17 million people tuned in to watch amc's walking dead season 5 premier thats not counting any one who watched it on the amc web site for free or a pirated stream
and WoW still makes more than double the amount of revenue that LoL does. *golf clap*
We really want to get to a cadence where we can release expansions more quickly. Once a year I think would be a good rate. I think the best thing we can do for new players is to keep coming out with regular content updates.

Succinctly, you are correct. They have a lot riding on the expansion. They knew MoP received bad rep, even their guy ghostcrawler said "no more happy pandas". Why they ever went that route, I dont know. Caused me to leave the game, pretty much for good.
If the flavor of WoD is that of TBC, I could return. But I was I think 24 when TBC came out. 30 now, married, kid, house, career. Less time to raid, less time for all that social positioning within the guild to get a raid spot. If I came back, it would be purely for LFR or some ultra casual guild that only raided flex.
I'm sure I'm not alone for the reason of re-subbing last month. I only re-subbed to get credit for the horde mount and to test the changes of 6.0.2 (which I was hoping they would've implemented the restore deleted character option but looks like its on hold). However, I have no plans of re-subbing again until WoD goes on sale and after a few months of content have been put back out. Many people I have talked to are not comfortable with the stat-squish though and have no plans of returning as long as its in place. So only time will tell to see how well the game does after WoD but I don't think the numbers are going to go as well as Blizzard thinks.

Every single number in that chart, every single number increase you are quoting, is post xpac launch. You are comparing pre xpac numbers to post xpac numbers in some attempt to show "see, less people are coming back for WoD than past xpacs".......otherwise you wouldn't be comparing pre xpac subs to post xpac subs.
How about we wait until the xpac actually drops before comparing to past xpacs and making some weird "lets wait till 10 mil before claming WoW isnt dieing" statement, no?

When I said i had "time", i meant virtual time, i got no RL "time" for you.
What a big surprise.
There goes every argument that the game's dying, again.

Just shows how desperately we need AAA P2P mmorpgs.

The numbers will drop quite a bit after one month, and a lot more after three.
Expect WoW subs to maintain its 6.5mil to 7 mil base. I don't see it ever going below or above that on a consistent basis.
