If this weren't associated with Halo it wouldn't nearly do as well.
Do you still log into your favorite game because of the initial hype you had for it during launch? Or do you log into it because the game its self still fun after a month or how ever long you have been playing that game? Because about 3.2 million players are still logging into destiny after a month. The hype which is the initial excitement you have for the game dies but it doesnt mean your still not having fun playing the game.
Does the people who still play WoW after many years still feel the same hype as they did when it launched every time they log in?
And for that last logic you made, why isnt star wars the old republic super popular than?

News flash for ya buddy:
Destiny release date = September 9, 2014 (which is a little over a month ago).
This fits in the Initial hype phase. The true test of a game is whether it can stand the test of time. THAT is my point. You can't judge the game on its initial reception. We've all seen the spike and tank time and time again. It may continue to do well or then again it may not- time will tell.
Now on to your second criticism. My logic is extremely sound. It is well known that brand familiarity markets better. I can point to data but I'll leave that for you to google yourself. Never said the game was bad, only saying a large factor in sales is Bungie's relation to the Halo series. Your SWTOR example actually supports (rather than refutes) my statement since it was actually very popular at release (again, some brand name recognition). But we all know what happened afterwards...
Pretty much sold off Bungee's name alone. Shame it doesn't live up to its own hype at all (which to be fair it would be extremely difficult to ever live up to that). Its amazing how games can sell just based off who developed it without much thought of what it actually offered. Blizzard did it with Diablo 3, Bioware with The Old Republic, and now bungee with Destiny,
If this weren't associated with Halo it wouldn't nearly do as well.
do you know why AngryJoe is so popular? because its a hater nothing more..
Doesn't matter. Some (I said SOME) of the points he makes are true and valid. Plus you can easily see from other reviews that it hasn't been all positive. Just telling it like it is.

Brand recognition goes an especially long ways on consoles. The CoD franchises, the Madden franchises, even the most haphazardly developed entry will sell millions.
The fact is that Destiny is a solid shooter with RPG elements, but it was nowhere near what Bungie claimed it to be prior to release. If it becomes that over time, then kudos to them and I will probably pick it back up. As of right now I only play if my brother on the other side of the planet wants to play so we can chill and catch up.
It was a solid game released by a well-known FPS developer in a next-gen drought with a lot of hype. I'm not surprised it sold so many copies. However, I think the reviews are spot-on. It's pretty, it has the polish of a major FPS developer, but it's repetitive and fails to create a likable narrative. It's multiplayer options are strangely spotty and cumbersome. Hopefully Bungie patches and creates and expands and it becomes something worthy of the hype they gave it before release.

Your comment indicated as you said the hype wont last, and you are right the hype doesnt last and that goes for any game good or bad. And the hype for destiny is gone because its been a month now which is long enough because people have seen all the reviews out for it, they played the beta before launch, and they played it after launch long enough to see if they like it or not. And the people that were disappointed already moved on by now.
And so my point is that after all that, presently the game has about 3.2 million daily players logging in. Usually a new mmos population start out with that much at launch and go down to 400K after a month.
Theres someone like you saying things about the test of time for every game on this website and those very mmo are still being played after months and even years with a lesser population than Destiny, they usually start out with a million or two and go down to 400l-500k in less than a month which is still good. On top of that those mmos did not even receive as much success and popularity as Destiny. Just to name a few examples, Final Fantasy XIV (which crushed the naysayers expectations) ESO, and Secret World.
Whats more is that Destiny has been spitting out content updates and new in game events like its nothing before the first month even finished, how many mmos can do that in its first month? instead most mmos go through a shit storm in that first month and have no time to make content updates. And even on top of the content updates, bungie is still improving things like balance and fixing minor bugs.
Not on PC so means nothing, I would spend the money a console would cost on hardware for my PC. When its about options and there are less of them its a fail IMO usually.
Originally posted by Raquis ja right just like eso was topselling till everyone saw what a disappointment it was I did not even bother buying destiny after I played the beta.
Everyone except the 3.2 million daily players currently. Its been a little over a month and majority of the disappointed people are already gone and now its just the people who enjoy the game that remains and the number is just going up slowly from this point on. And on top of that bungie just keeps making patches that fix small bugs and balancing issues and content updates every week with new in game events. Most online games at that early point in their life span are going through a shit storm trying to fix game breaking bugs and performance issues.
Also I dont know why so much hate for ESO as well, since the game has come a long way in such a short time and they also have been making content updates that came out on time as planned. The ESO population is pretty damn healthy, I would say a little above average and I cant wait for it to be released on PS4.
Currently? As of right now - ??? The news was peak numbers during launch - I very seriously doubt that they are anywhere near that today.
I doubt it - show me the data - all of my friends who bought Destiny played it for 2 weeks and none play it anymore.
Also ESO population is pretty damn healthy - what does that mean??
A little above average??? What is average - what does that mean exactly?
They averaged 3.2 million players logging in each day for the first month.
The thing about that number it doesn't show the rate of which players left.
Some facts.
Activision only report of cash made off of copies sold to customers (not shipped to retailers) is $325 in the first five days.
Assuming the base price $60 per copy, that equates to roughly 5.4 million copies sold in the first five days.
Even being generous and taking the "3.2 million average" as actually equaling 3.2 million players still playing. that still leaves Destiny with a very steep drop off in player retention.
2.2 million players have already stopped logging in, a player loss rate of over 40%. . .
. . .great start to what is sure to be a 10 year epic franchise.

Doesn't look like you have read what Bungie said in full. The numbers are impressive. There is a thread about it. If you give it a read you can come back and claim an even bigger drop off - since the numbers point to sales far higher than 5.4M.
Destiny however is not a subscription game. It is b2p. You buy it, play it, put it away. Like Civ5 say. Stop playing - for a while - but you don't "leave". And when you want to play again you do so. And if an expansion comes out you consider buying it - and if you had fun you may well do so.
And that is what makes the numbers Bungie released impressive for they suggest a lot of people have been enthralled enough to put an awful lot of hours into the game.
“Last September, Take-Two announced worldwide retail sell-through [sales to consumers] for [GTA V] of over $800 million on day one and over $1 billion for the first three days,” Pachter wrote in a note to investors. “[Those are] both industry records. This September’s biggest release, Activision Blizzard’s Destiny, had day one sell-in to retailers of over $500 million, a record for a new franchise, with sell-through to consumers of over $325 million in its first five days.”
ever since halo 4 i refused to fall for the hype. I still remenber 343 making so much money off the halo 4 name and everyone saying how its not a bad game.. i watched the population start off at about 1million peak players on the first day by the end of the 2nd month it was down to about 25k players. i don't think its going to get that low for destiny but i think this game is like a substitute until the big games start coming out in the next few months. I looked forward to this game myself but they cut out so much i'm glad i didn't fall for the hype I'm sure with updates and such it will be a great game tho. Ill probably purchase this game when i can get all there lame dlc deals with the game for cheap considering i've heard the disc has alot of dlc on them already -.-

But, 3.2M players a day doesn't mean 6.5M people logged in to begin with and half of them stopped playing. You're making an assumption of the habits of these console players. 6.5M people could be logging in, but only every other day. The time frame for the stat is limited to a day, not a week or the entire 30 days. These players could also not be playing Destiny exclusively. They are mostly console players after all, not One Game To Rule Them All MMORPG players. :-)
The $60 average price is incorrect. It's more like $65 to account for the people who bought the "special" versions of the game. We do have VGChartz reporting that the sales after 30 days is something like 6.5 million boxes sold. This seems pretty inline with the $325M dollar number after 5 days if the vast majority of sales occurred early.
Any numbers given by a developer need to be taken with a grain of salt. You'll notice there's no good way to take the numbers given, and then tie them together to get more information about the game. This is probably deliberate on their part. Sales for the first five days + the average players per day = ??? They give out only the information they want people to see.
Besides, the numbers by themselves really aren't important. These numbers are only important relative to something else. Bungie is comparing their new franchise to an existing franchise that is itself very successful. Destiny is performing better than than the franchise that got them the $500M in the first place. That is impressive.
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.

*ahem* I believe that it was just released that Borderlands had the same issue. No big hype surrounding it, though. See, if people knew what they were actually talking about, then they'd understand that the DLC isn't even ready. There's even a YouTube video of someone getting into one of the new areas. It's completely empty! This content was NEVER played in beta or alpha because you couldn't access it. The fact that there are placeholders in a UI or even a doorway that you can glitch to gain access to a level is completely inconsequential. The fact of the matter is that the areas aren't populated and the work of creating those levels is still in progress, and isn't trivial. However, it is completely possible that art assets, etc. are already on disc.
You show me a video of someone playing this unfinished content in the current version of the game, and you win.

What is "it's current state", like release?
I actually own both games and there is a massive difference. You're basically comparing apples to oranges. That being said, I have a lot of love for SoM. I love the game mechanics, complexity, etc. However, It's still number 3 on my list at the moment. Currently it's Destiny, WoW pre-launch, SoM.
The problem with most of the "haters" is that they expected something that Destiny wasn't really intended to be. Destiny is an episodic adventure. The majority of people were expecting a more definitive conclusion to the story. That's not what they're going for at all. They probably, definitely, could have executed on the story a little (lot) better, but it's not so much that, but the expectation that I tend to laugh at. You don't hear people complaining about every single Tell Tale game on the market, do you? Shoot, they've got like 5 or 6 "episodes" with every single one of their games. You don't hear people whining about it being incomplete.
That being said, there are a ton of people who do "get it". So I don't really see, or expect to see, any real decline at this point, as long as they are keeping people interested. Even if there is, it'll likely be similar to what we see with games like WoW, with people playing other games during breaks between expansions.

It's funny really he is a MH veteran from '04 and that franchise copied the same franchise that Destiny copied. Now MH originally was okay , the font brown on brown background could of been a little bit better and the carrying of that bloody egg for 25 mins only for it to fall over a ledge , could have been designed better. O the game they copied ? Sorry got carried away , PSO obviously. Destiny does it totally better than MH ever did.

But we can see the habits of destiny players: the article that lists the 3.2 million players daily also lists that the average amount of log ins per user per day in that first month was 1.8.
So it is reasonable to assume that the varience of the daily log in numbers will be low.
And the point is Destiny as a franchise has no staying power, because the game is shallow, repetative, and lacks meaningful story.

Monster Hunter since '04!

Cheers,
BadOrb.
PSO 4 years , EQOA 4 months , PSU 7 years , SWTOR launch ongoing , PSO2 SEA launch ongoing , Destiny 360 launch ongoing.

But we can see the habits of destiny players: the article that lists the 3.2 million players daily also lists that the average amount of log ins per user per day in that first month was 1.8.
So it is reasonable to assume that the varience of the daily log in numbers will be low.
And the point is Destiny as a franchise has no staying power, because the game is shallow, repetative, and lacks meaningful story.
just look at Titanfall, same problems.
