Anarchy Online for slowest levelling is my pick. Never got my Fixer past 217 and that was with Shadowland Missions. Getting from 199 - 200 was a PITA, too. Can't remember what AI level my main had, but it was hard to level. Ah, those times. Too bad they turned Fixers zu mini Soldies. -_- *curses WOW for drawing away half of his org back then*
EVE is definitely the slowest, takes like 28 years or so to get all the skills.
You know.. I was just thinking.. I'm surprised more MMO's don't use a similar formula for progression as Eve uses.. Real Time, and not some artificial "kill" XP.. This way your character(s) are progressing while offline.. We could have multiple areas of progression as well.. such as: It might take 3 days to learn "Dodge II", that would increase your dodge percentage, or maybe you wish to spend a day (23 hrs) doing physical weight training that increases your strength 1 point? Killing mobs then are not your focus of character progression, but are a means to loot coin, mats and faction standing..
PS.. Only one character can progress as one time.. So you can not have 10 alts all training at the same time..
I am on my second tour of really trying to like EVE Online. But, I probably won't resubscribe when my membership lapses again. For me the time in based leveling gets in the way of actually playing. I feel like if I go through 7 worm holes in a row and survive all that they have thrown at me. I shouldn't come out empty handed in a limping ship because I went in with skills that were a little too low to actually deal with anything in there. I should be rewarded for my effort. I should come out stronger then I went in. And, that is where the game looses me. By rewarding me at fixed intervals regardless of weather I put more effort in. And, I think EVE is especially niche because of that.
I don't want to be...cruel in talking about the kind of people that play EVE. But, I have had a lot of conversations with regulars. Most of them are much older then I am. Some of them retired. And, I tend to think of it as a game for the elderly more then anything else. They have the free time to micromanage painfully long processes. And, just the amount of energy it takes to sit in the hangar and ship spin while they do it. Even their epic battles takes days to pull together and hours to actually finish. It's simply too much of a slugs pace for me. And I think a lot of people might feel the same if the formula were more widely applied.
Wurm Online is extremely slow which is good and bad. Its good in that it makes your gaming and the property you work on more like a long term hobby its bad it that it takes..well..forever.
There is also a shit ton of workable content however it takes a lifetime to get into it however to be honest I like that.

I agree.
To be honest CCP has gotten more money from me just having my account active and gaining skills much more than me actually playing the game. From a business standpoint its a brilliant system
Before I gave up on WildStar I reached lv38 in about 2 months of casual play and intentionally holding back to avoid leveling so fast.
In Neverwinter I reached max level in 2.5 months of casual play.
Star Trek Online, max level in 5 months of casual play (with a big push towards the end so I can beat a self-inposed deadline).
City of Heroes, about 9 months for each character but it was a FUN 9 months.
Yes, it did seem like the time to reach max level was being cut in half for each successive game. Something is definitely up with the industry in that respect.
Fastest was undoubtedly Neverwinter for me. It felt like every three or four quests led to leveling up.
Slowest has definitely been EVE. Although WoW felt pretty slow to me as well. I guess because it tends to be pretty repetitive and I would take regular breaks from playing.
Most are easy but for me fastest was probably star wars online I leveled two 50's so fast that I didn't even remember doing it, it was effortless.
Slowest for me anyways LOTRO I have been playing the shit out of that game off and one since launch DAY ONE, granted I have two characters but the hunter is still level 45 the burglar is 69. I just don't get why I cant level in that game. And what the level cap is going on 100? I will bang out quests for 3 hours straight and my bars moves a couple bubbles. it took me literally months of endless pain and suffering to get through the convoluted maze that was Moria. It was easily the most painful experience and worst expansion I've ever suffered through.
Maybe part of it is travel time, its the most confusing thing in that game, most of the map names don't coincide with the stable list. I'm unsure how anyone knows how to get anywhere, its like you have to keep your own legend of names of stables because they are not on the main map. Only some are like Bree for examples. Others the stable masters name isn't on the main map so how do you even know where it will take you?
I've pretty much given up on ever getting a character to end game in that game. so basically gave up on the game. And like in other MMO's when they raise the level cap they raise XP on older levels, they don't seem to do that in LOTRO. So catching up is impossible, for me anyways. Every other MMO I've played leveling is more or less effortless.. And I've played most everything out there expect the Korean F2P messes.
Wow. I had the exact same experience as you haha. I have a forty something hunter and a sixty something warden and have been playing off and on since launch and also had a terrible time in Moria. Had a lot of fun over all though.

what other mmo does this besides WOW ? (making old content give more experience)

Same I have some GREAT GREAT memories of that game. Some of the most immersive questsing and struggles shared with with my friends and clan mates. Everything just felt epic. I just cant seem to level faster than the content lol!

Maybe none, but if any game need to do it its this one.
I would agree that DCUO has the fastest base leveling, but that's mostly because the leveling is little more than an elaborate tutorial. The REAL leveling is grinding out all those skill points via feats.
For the longest - In the early days Asheron's Call 1 effectively had no level cap. So I don't know how you can get much longer than that. But in reality, once you were using "Level VI" (or later, Level VII) skills and spells, you were really getting up there. As for the time involved for that? Maybe around two years of fairly hard core play back then. I'm sure today's attention deficit disorder crowd would be having fits...
Note: AC1 was my favorite MMORPG "world"(although for many reasons other than leveling, too). It wasn't just the metaphorical equivalent of a Kleenex that you sneeze in once, and then throw away.
For the shortest - Does any MMORPG take more than a month or two these days? Some of you guys mentioned Aion, but I'm personally not aware of any. And myself, I'd consider EVE old school.
Originally posted by Abaxial Thread title says it all, I've not progressed very far in any game except WoW, so I'm interested in opinions. TERA seems relatively fast and Allods relatively slow. What do you think of the levelling speeds in different games?
Did not know QUALITY of the game is judged by how fast one level. Only thing I'm interested in is having FUN. But sure, leveling itself is fun, getting new spells and rest ... so there must be some good compromise. I personally like pace of leveling of Wow (but not for older expansions where is too fast) and Swtor, would prefer faster in Gw2, Rift acceptable, CO too slow, ...
Slowest : Every PWE title in the early stages after release.
Jade Dynasty has 150 preasc and 150 post asc levels. getting to 150 would take something like 3 months in the earlier days, then when ascension came out, it would take like a year to get to +145. Then 145-150 would take around 3 months/level. The game leveled so slow, that 2 years after release of ascension, I still didnt see a single 150 asc.
The new one : Swordsman, I was amongs the top 10 levelers at release till I quit, it took us 2 full months to get to 72 out of 85, where every 3rd level was already double the effort of the last one.
Fastest : Guild Wars 1&2, SWTOR.
Basically : Chinese games are usually VERY slow, western games are VERY fast.
I'm the hardcore player, the one that rushes lvl cap before you even finish the starting area.

Somebody, somewhere has better skills as you have, more experience as you have, is smarter than you, has more friends as you do and can stay online longer. Just pray he's not out to get you.
Webzen's Mu Online is the slowest leveling game without buying cash shop items. A friend of mine had been playing for around 5 years only to get to level 400, which isn't even high. Don't get me wrong, he was playing everyday for around 14-16 hours per day each day.

It isn't. Levelling in WoW today is much faster than it was back in vanilla, but that doesn't mean it's better. Blizzard presumably think so.

Mmmmmmeehhhhhhh, I don't know about that. I think that there is a different culture these days about things like power levelling/speed levelling.
Remember that the first level 60 dinged on like December 3rd (like 10 days after release). So I'm not sure what the in-game time spent on that was, but it's still pretty quick, even by today's standards. I do know that, in general, it was a more lengthy process, though. However, I think that as your game ages, you do want to decrease that levelling curve. Otherwise, you're just creating barriers for new players, right?

Also an old asian game called dragon raja was very slow, it was so slow that nobody on the server had max level and the server had been around for like 3 years. And that is just the combat level, it also had weapon skills, trade skills etc etc.

DaoC you can be level 50 (max) in anywhere from 2 hours (or less) power leveling to 8 or 9 hours using battleground quest/PvE quest hub method.

This, from my experience. You can see the sights, even hang out in the Watchtower browsing gear, and get to max in about 10 hours, if that.

ArcheAge has the fastest leveling I've seen in a game. Doing just about anything gets you xp. Slowest was probably LOTRO.
