LOTRO had a really good community, I haven't played it in a number of years, but it used to be top notch - I would rarely run into an elitist or jerk. Of all the games I have ever played, this would top the list as the best community.
I hear Vanguard was even better, but c'est la vie. Also, City of Heros was really tight-knit - RIP.
FFXIV was a bit rough when it first re-launched, but now that most of the people who wanted Yet-Another-Treadmill to burn through burned through it, those who are left are good folk. Of the games I've played lately, this is far and away the best.
There are good people in WoW - but it's very server dependent, and there are just so many people, and so many elitist jerks, that it was extremely caustic to me. The community was the #1 reason I stop playing that game every time I try to pick it back up. I like the game, can't stand the community.
Eve surprisingly has some decent folks. It has a lot of folks that will backstab you and pee on you while they do it, but it has some pockets of humanity.
EQ1 - that was my first MMO. I have a lot of friends there still, and most are really helpful, but most have just been playing so long (and have their own army of alts/second/third/fourth/tenth accounts) that they all pretty much do their own thing. They are happy to talk, and give advice, and love new folks since they are so rare, but that's about it.
Rift, SWTOR, GW2, Defiance, TERA, EQ1/2- all rate as average.
Most of the PWI and Nexon games, in my experience, are full of churned rot (including the Cryptic ones). Nexon has some fun games, but PWI titles are mostly carbon-copy clones with a different skin, and everything is either extreme lottery cash shop, or pay-to-win cash shop.

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse. - FARGIN_WAR
Lineage 1, DAOC, vanilla WOW, LotRO as the best I've played (see the pattern?) and currently playing EVE (almost 5 years now)
I actually enjoyed the community we had in AA during the founder period, especially on the alpha server, if they hadn't taken it down I'd have stayed playing on it.

i dont have an mmo community i could say its the best. All mmos ive played are full of toxicity, trolls, jerks, kids, and also nice people.
I have to say that i laugh when i see people claiming WoW has the worst community in history of mmos. I've played the official WoW on various servers since Cata released and based on my experience its one of the less toxic communities. Either most of the trolls matured or left the game, but the numbers are low compared to most other mmos out there (new and old, sub and free). EDIT: on the open world that is.... in pvp and dungeons there are definitelly idiots.
I didnt play Path of Exile much but when i did i rarely saw a troll in global chat, which is a good thing IMO.
So, I was discussing with a friend about MMO communities, and how it's so seldom that you see people in MMORPGs anymore who are open and helpful to other players - not just their friends or guild-mates, but people in general. So many keep to themselves, only care about themselves, or will outright try to screw over and take advantage of others, creating a cold or even hostile environment, it's difficult to know where these friendlier, more outgoing communities are.
For example, helping people through notoriously difficult content and not asking for anything in payment/return. Rather, helping because they can, and asking only that the recipient pay it forward by helping others similarly when they need it. I mean true interaction, people doing things for others for the sake of helping a fellow player enjoy the game "that much more", making the community that much better by doing so.
I'm curious what MMORPGs people here play, or have played, where they felt the in-game community was the friendliest, most helpful, etc. Again, not just people in your own guilds, personal friends, etc. I mean people in general.
If you could give an example of such interactions, that would be even better. It could be something done for or by you, or something you witnessed being done for someone else.
Thanks

Some mmos take more time, this kind of people are normally more quiet and unnotorys, sometimes luck is need to find them.
In OWPvP games is where i find more this kind of people, i thing because its more easy to see the diference between this players and the others that dont worth create any relations.
I know DayZ mod is not a mmo, but its a online survival "game", and sometimes extreme one and it was amazing find a nice group of people in the midle of that nightmare where everyone is paranoic killing anyone.
My answer: this people are in every online game, sometimes we are luck to find them, sometimes we dont, sometimes they are just quiet while the trolls make the most noise.

Of those I've heard about, these usually don't come up when discussing the best communities. Glad things have changed.
