I honestly never got the appeal of this game, and that's coming from someone who started their mmo "career" on FFXI's NA release and enjoyed that game a lot for a few years. But this game just feels so, so, so linear and -small-, with invisible walls everywhere and very, very boring level grinding (uuuuugh FATES or leves constantly after you finish the quests on your first class or two? UGH UGH UGH). The crafting mini-game was still vastly inferior to EQ2, and ....I just didn't think it was a great game. It's weird to me that games are becoming more and more linear, more closed off instead of open world, and LESS RP friendly as time goes by, rather than more of these things.
Ah, the age of the brainwashed console gamer I guess. Oh well. Hope the expansion does well for those that enjoy the game, and I understand it's popular.... I think these games are just moving in a direction I really can't enjoy or get into the mentality of. Cest la vie

Why are so many open world and non linear games so popular on consoles than? Why are games like Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Assassins Creed so popular in the console market if they are brain washed like you say? Witcher 3 is about to become a hit as well on consoles. Dark/Demon Souls has been a hit on consoles and soon Bloodborne.
Was a huge proponent for this game ever since 1.2x and onwards into Alpha and Beta. Supported it in large when it was released and made many threads and guides regarding it. Though it seems that I will continue to boycott it on the basis of limited housing availability and pricing structure, even as someone who has had every class maxed out since the first version (and hundreds of millions of gil going into the game).
They screwed RPers over by promising their own named RP realm in 1.0, but went silent despite constant inquiries. Whatever. Not too big a deal. But then they -- through lack of translations (which I think is an excuse) -- said housing would be more available and far more affordable for people in 2.3.8. It wasn't. In fact, it shared the same system that Free Companies do -- who proceed to buy up the cheapest housing in general. "People buy eventually" is kind've a moot point when it's shared between companies and individuals. Many of my friends all quit in 2.3.8, and I don't blame them; I joined them despite making around two to five million gil a day in sales with two accounts and 64 retainers at my disposal (not to mention multiple Builders of the Realm, since once you have one that can craft everything HQ, it's easy to level up another).
Bought two of my Free Companies large houses when they came out; though trying to do the same for a friends list that is pretty much full is ridiculous. They can't afford it, they just want to play the game and experience housing; the rooms just aren't what they were looking forward to when first getting the game. It was the story -- which they finished in a month -- and then the Housing system.
In addition, I have/had about eight characters that are my "mains" in terms of gameplay and RP. This game hates Alts more than MoP did with WoW; you have to have a second account to do anything, because you can't mail to yourself, and the system, naturally, requires you to level everything up. I was hoping housing would be affordable and competently (accessible by everyone) made for many of my characters. The prospect of "people can save 50+ million gil) or whatnot for a plot is no valid for the casual player. It becomes a job of a main feature. This is what WoW itself realized with their Garrison Features in both making it available to everyone at the start, as well as alts all contributing to achievements that unlock the final tier of buildings. You still need gold on each character to build up to Tier 2 and Tier 3, but it's no where near the prices found here.
That said, the whole prospect of "saving and working for" is something that is missed from past games such as UO where you had to buy a plot from someone. But the Average MMO gamer nowadays has a family and responsibilities; it would be much better if it was tied to challenge and not just spending months working a job to make gil after coming home from working a job to support your family. Level requirements, item requirements, and a small fee -- in addition to a separate area or at least differentiation between Free Company Housing and Personal.
This and the marriage system were my two most wanted features. Though this as a whole has caused most of my friends -- including my s/o and main RP partner -- to quit. There's nothing left for me anymore. Not to mention that the game isn't very friendly to solo players.
Guess I'll just sit on a pile of gil until a rainy day. I just find many of their bait and switch tactics to be immoral and have quit on that personal belief; it is an opinion that I and many share as we move onto other games. Though I hope the game continues to do well and that the expansion is fantastic for those who just play to enjoy themselves; perhaps I just worry about others too much, as I could probably afford houses on all my characters, and make new friends. Though I also pretty much owned certain sections of the market at the time. 99% of the people struggled to make 200k gil in a month's time.
Due to frequent travel in my youth, English isn't something I consider my primary language (and thus I obtained quirky ways of writing). German and French were always easier for me despite my family being U.S. citizens for over a century. Spanish I learned as a requirement in school, Japanese and Korean I acquired for my youthful desire of anime and gaming (and also work now). I only debate in English to help me work with it (and limit things). In addition, I'm not smart enough to remain fluent in everything and typically need exposure to get in the groove of things again if I haven't heard it in a while. If you understand Mandarin, I know a little, but it has actually been a challenge and could use some help.
Also, I thoroughly enjoy debates and have accounts on over a dozen sites for this. If you wish to engage in such, please put effort in a post and provide sources -- I will then do the same with what I already wrote (if I didn't) as well as with my responses to your own. Expanding my information on a subject makes my stance either change or strengthen the next time I speak of it or write a thesis. Allow me to thank you sincerely for your time.

And what exactly is a non linear game in the mmorpg world?
And if there is one a successful one??
Yeh exactly.
meh as someone whos played since launch I do think its alittle to linear. Ever since the hunt came out i havent found myself doing any dungeon because they are so boring and the same. I'd like for them to find a way to change them so every time is a different feeling... This is prob the only game where im not thinking omg im so overwhelped this is so hard but instead i think.. God i wish my teammates could understand this scripted crap after 1-2 wipes. Love the game still.
For me the biggest issue being a fan of a PVE themepark world is that after playing SWTOR and now ESO I just hate voiceless walls of text. Also the NPCs in this world are very lifeless and just stand around moving their arms. It just feels like such a step backwards. FInally the way the cities are divided with loading screens is very immersion breaking. Regardless, I may give this game a go again at some point since I only played in beta for the first 10 levels. I did like how beautiful it looked and it had the typical Final Fantasy charm. If a world is missing charm, it doesn't matter how many features it has, it will fail.
