....how does ESO compare?

I've been playing Fallout 3 flat out for about three months now. Awesome game. Love it. Love the freedom of exploring. Love the rush of entering an abandoned building not know what is behind that door. It has that little bit of a scare factor to it which is thrilling.

Last year I played Skyrim for maybe a little over a month. Eh, it was ok I suppose. There was just something missing. To me, Fallout 3 is FAR more entertaining. Perhaps its the setting. I don't know.

Recently started looking at ESO. I've learned over the years not to take all the reviews to heart. But as far as the gameplay, is it anything like Fallout 3 where its a near open world? I can explore caves, structures, and entities not knowing what each contain? Or is it more structural, go here, collect eight spider legs, go there, collect six pink socks, return to me for a reward?

Thanks for reading.

    It doesn't!

The game is still relatively fun but as a lover of all things open world, sandbox style exploration centric content ESO falls way short.  While you can still explore, for the most part your relegated to smallish zones meant for your level.  Which has a tendency to feel too linear for my open world tastes.

Sandbox means open world, non-linear gaming PERIOD!

Subscription Gaming, especially MMO gaming is a Cash grab bigger then the most P2W cash shop!

Bring Back Exploration and lengthy progression times. RPG's have always been about the Journey not the destination!!!

This is what I thought would happen.  I don't think you can take a game like Skyrim (or Fallout) and squash it into the limitations of what an MMORPG has to do with many people.

That's sort of what I figured. I've loving Fallout 3 and I don't mind not having a chatbox full of trolls and gold spam. I'll stick to single player gaming for now since I feel burnt out from the online scene.

    Thanks.

the amazing thing about Fallout 3 is that it actually makes you feel like you are one of the few people left alive in a post apocalyptic world, and that danger is at every turn.

this is incredibly hard to replicate in an mmo with literally thousands of people all running around like chickens with their head cut off. all spamming chat with LF this and LF that. Fallen Earth tried it and failed miserably.

the only multiplayer game i have ever played that even got close to the feeling of danger/loneliness/survival which was the staple of Fallout 3, is the original Dayz mod for Arma 2. if you have never played Dayz i highly suggest getting it. of course Dayz is a zombie game, but the combination of few players/large map, full loot free for all pvp, scaveging to keep your hunger/thirst/sickness in check, and the hard to kill zombies is fantastic. bar non the best survival/apocalyptic multiplayer game out to date.

i cannot comment on the standalone Dayz game because i haven't played it, but from what i read it's not as good as the original mods for Arma 2.

OP, Skyrim (and previous TES titles) wipe the floor with ESO, so if SKyrim was not entertaining enough for you then ESO probably wont be either. It has nothing similar to Fallout. I dont like Fallout games but i love TES games and ESO is the weakest TES game out there.

You might still enjoy ESO if you like the TES Lore and if you play it as a regular mmorpg, but dont expect it to blow your mind like a full fledged TES single player game would do.

Yea, I can't explain why I like Fallout 3 so much better than Skyrim. After a few weeks of Skyrim, I wasn't impressed like I am with Fallout 3.

The good news is Fallout 4 is on the horizon. Hopefully next year.

    Cant wait.

    it's 2 quite different themes.

Fallout is the "mad max meets Alien" experience. Skyrim is the "Game of Thrones rated E for everyone " experience.

If you like Fallout 3, you should also give New Vegas a run.  Highly recommend.

You should have bought the game guide, would have told you what was behind every door, under every rock, and exactly what you should do to optimize your playing experience.  Then you could have wrapped the entire game up in about 6 weeks like I did and it would have been exactly like a MMORPG.  image

But I do agree, I enjoyed Fallout 3 much more than Skyrim, but I have a fondness for the franchise that goes way back.  Something satisfying about combat shotguns and chain guns.

I wouldn't say ESO is really much like either game, it's more of a traditional theme park MMORPG than anything else, just my opinion.

    Thanks everyone.

As far as Fallout 3, I do have the GOTY Edition so I have all the addons. I'm going to finish this up then purchase New Vegas. As far as ESO, I think I'll pass on this one.

Not sure what has happened to my love for MMOs, but I'm having way more fun in single player for the time being.

    Thanks again.

You are comparing a single player game to a MMO, and you have focused in on one of the areas that single player do best. Not surprisingly then I can tell you ESO does not compare well. But even the old big beast MMOs that gave you more area to explore are going to struggle when compared to FO3.

Not saying you cannot make comparisons between the two game formats, but this is an area where MMOs are never going to win.

That's what everyone is thinking, But its not grounded anywhere in reality.
I'm convinced its not even in production.

Postapoc can work in an mmorpg settings. It fails because most people don't want virtual worlds they want a theme park. Which is why i will be endlessly waiting for one..

I agree totally. Kind of a strange question to be asking imho. Fallout is an awesome game, but it would be like comparing The Witcher 2 with Eve...they aren't really close enough to make plausible judgements.

A single player rpg like FO3 will never win when comparing it to questing with friends, or crafting and trading with others.

Yea, I know it is a far comparison. I only asked because the Elder Scrolls and Fallout series have the aura around them as games that offer going off on your own and exploring. Whether it be an abandoned mining shelter, a rusted out bus, grocery store taken over by rebels, or caves inhabited by bandits. I was curious if ESO had a similar allure to it. It seems more like go here and collect these items and move onto the next zone. Yea Fallout 3 has its quests, but it more like find out what is causing "X". You go there and you end up in a flooded out subway killing off a queen ant, or show up where friendly forces are fighting off mutants only to have to jump in and help them. I don't even know how an MMO could incorporate something like that.
