Honestly, stop crying over spilled milk. You got burned. Caveat Emptor. Live and learn. There are other games out there to play. There are other games on the horizon. I suppose all those people who bought into lifetime subscriptions in other games that went F2P certainly felt burned too... they learned there lesson. Now so have you.
This is not the game for you, you know it, I know it, everyone reading this thread knows it. Get a refund, don't get a refund, but really, you're not convincing anyone to play or not to play this game... it's 15 minutes of fame has already left the building. Those who were going to play it, already have. The rest, probably never will.
WoD releases in like two weeks... prepare to praise it and bash it, it's the next one on the chopping block. You can complain about how $65 is a bit steep for so little new content. You know, the usual. Come the new year we have several titles looking to be bashed as well. Fear not, your opportunity to be fleeced is endless, it does not end with just one game or one developer.
Rejoice!
For starters Blizzard has never done anything unethical in WoW's 10 + years, yes they have bastardized the game from time to time but they never promised a monetary compensation and not delivered. This post isn't about what a shit game AA is but rather about a business promising one thing and then not delivering.
Not sure if anyone else noticed they took back the extra month patron status they promised us during their botched release. I logged in one day and it said I had until November 16th then the following day I went to log in and my patron status had expired along with losing 3k labor. I contacted them two weeks ago and still haven't heard back.
Trion is a shady company that disguises their unethical business practices with incompetence, which is even worse. They screw you out of a month that they promised then post on their site "There was a glitch in our system and we are working on it!" only to never hear anything else on the issue.
In less than 2 months:
1. Charged $300 for packs that I never ordered. Took weeks to get a response and the only way I heard back was sitting in chat support for hours. "Oh it looks like your account was hacked by an Asian IP address"... ok so why was my account allowed to be accessed by an overseas IP address? Most companies will suspend your account when an overseas IP address tries to access your account, you are notified via email and until you verify the email the account is deactivated, not Trion.
2. AA release, need I say more. Paid money to play a game that I couldn't log into for days.
3. My month free patron status that I was promised because of their piss poor release disappeared two weeks ago, I put a ticket in, still no response.
4. Last week I purchased a $10 Apex pack from their store, my account was double charged. They did refund this one after I submitted a ticket. However, my GF watches the account like a hawk, if I were in charge of the finances I never would have caught it and they would have made off with an extra $10, how many other people are they doing this to?
When I look at these things I say to myself Trion is either horribly incompetent (however I played Rift at release and none of these issues existed), or they are scam artists. Either way not a company I want to do business with let alone have access to my credit card.
Honestly, stop crying over spilled milk. You got burned. Caveat Emptor. Live and learn.
Unethical business practices will never change if people stop crying over spilled milk.
I've yet to see a single unethical business practice ended by sending a scathing letter to ones Aunt May. There are better avenues to bring about change, this forum certainly isn't one of them. Aunt May didn't even play the game, she's a retired old lady on a goat farm.
This forum isn't sending a private letter to Aunt May. This forum is posting something to the public. Biiiiiiiig difference.
If anything, posting about these sorts of things to a publically read forum with a large reader base has higher potential than complaining privately to the company (where only they will hear you, and likely brush you off) or, in some cases, complaining to the Business Bureau (where it might be difficult for them to understand exactly what happened, and also where "unethical" doesn't always mean "broke the law" anyways. ....though informing the BBB isn't a bad idea either in a lot of cases). Certainly I imagine it'd probably be a better chance to influence things than writing your local congressman (at least without back up)
Posting to a public forum and getting your voice heard is the first step you should be taking when it comes to these sorts of things. Everything else, be it everyone mailing their congressman or speaking with their wallets in large enough numbers to get the company's attention or having enough people to file a class action suit (not that this would necessarily lead to that. .....maybe) STARTS WITH GETTING YOUR VOICE HEARD BY THE PUBLIC.
10% discount or a rebate of at least the same value... It doesn't make much difference to me. But then, I don't use the cash shop pretty much at all anyhow.
Well played. You should be a professional journalist. The mainstream media could use a person with your skills.
My reading of Scapes post is that the 10% discount will not be put directly in the marketplace but rather Trion will implement a solution on their side. It seems completely obvious to me that what they will be doing is giving periodic 10% refunds on all that is spent by patrons. This kind of solution would be equitable but not exactly ideal in that you will loose access to some of your funds until they are refunded. Everyone knows that rebates are not the same as direct discounts even though they theoretically get to the exact same point eventually.
I suspect that Trion is simply trying to figure out what they should do in addition to giving month end rebates to truely make the deal equitable. Will the rebate be larger than 10%? will you get bonus gems back? will you get bonus loyalty points for what you spend? Who knows. but I will bet it will be something more than the base 10%
I am a professional journalist, in fact. I don't get paid to write on here, and neither do I try to post material that would be paid for.
Your reading into what the post says is speculative. Nothing in the post indicates what you suggest as far as I can see. If Trion does offer something that is truly "equitable", then fine. Given their track record on this, I'm not willing to assume that.
What Trion said was "We've decided on an alternate solution that Trion Worlds can execute on its own. This equitable solution will also be granted retroactively."
Yes, I am speculating on what the solution may be to illustrate that "an alternate solution" can in fact be "equitable". Further I think that your statement that "Trion's now confirmed on its forums that it won't honour this..." is inaccurate and near libelous. That to provide an "equitable" solution is the same as an attempt to honor the agreement. Now we don't know what that solution will be or if it will in fact be equitable, but clearly Trion thinks it will be equitable, Therefore, to say that they confirmed that they "won't honour this" (your words) is more than speculating that they will fall short but is in fact a lie.
And it neither surprises me nor impresses me that you are an "professional journalist."

What is true is that they've said they cannot implement what they said they would, and they will provide an "alternate solution", which by its basic definition, is precisely that. Calling me names isn't going to make your point stronger, either.

The 10% discount on all cash shop purchases for patrons AFTER RELEASE was widely advertised in all of their promotional material right up until launch and for a full week after.
Everyone quite naturally assumed this meant as soon as the game was released and when it didn't happen, it was though to be just another annoying glitch.
Trion who appears to have promised that without XL's approval, was then forced to backtrack and spin "after release" into "at some point in time after release" when XL obviously said NFW to the idea. For the past month Trion has been trying to get XL to honor the 10% discount and change their mind. It seems that they now have a definitive "NO."
This is a PR disaster for Trion who now look incompetent in being unable to come through with it. It's XL who is at fault here but Trion either can't or won't be completely honest about it.
This. It's a shame but I'm guessing Trion didn't do their due diligence on how to implement a third party production for the West. Trion is very responsive with Rift and Trove, so not being able to change the code has to be a major pita.

And it is completely reasonable to be skeptical that their "alternative solution" will in fact be equitable. And it is absolutely accurate to say that they will not be providing what they originally promised which is why I think they are characterizing it as an "alternate solution". But to say that Trion "confirmed on its forums that it will not honour this..." is to mis-characterize what they did in fact say.
And I am not sure what names I have been calling you beyond "professional journalist." I apologize is that is considered an insult where you are from.

Support people are the lowest paid in most companies, and with good reason. They're not paid to think. They follow SOPs provided by a retail/ops team and send out canned statements written by an editorial staff.
Your request came in. John, the support dude, had a high case count that day. He skimmed over your correspondence and saw the word "refund", followed the SOP and you got your refund along with a nice canned response the SOP told him to send. He was able to quickly close the case which makes him happy since his performance is tied to case resolution. I highly doubt he even fully read your email.
But by all means, go on with your life thinking your "threat" had some effect on the outcome. It makes for great entertainment.
You let hollywood and tv shows effect your judgement too much. Customer service most certainly is not a " mindless drone " type job. Even if they do have a set of responses for customer replies someone most definitely did read and make the decision to refund their money.
If nothing else the Trion employee probably had a good laugh if they had a sense of humor.

It's actually even worse than that...
Originally Trion advertised it as a straightforward 10% discount with no disclaimer. You can see this all over the place in the press release reported by sites (including this one):
They then added "after release" to the Patron information on their website, and only when people complained about the lack of 10% did they backtrack saying it was supposed to mean "at some point after release", which was clearly a PR spin to try to get out of it.
Yeah, you're right. The initial mention of the 10% discount was unqualified.
I still think this went down as I speculated above. This 10% discount for patrons is common in the Trion F2P model for the games they have full control over. The Rift F2P model actually has gotten a lot of praise from the media and fans alike for being one of the better ones. It must be really awkward for them to have to run it all by the developers and not be able to run it as they like. Oh well, they're lying in the bed they made...
I also think a lot of the discussions behind the scenes centered around whose profits the 10% rebate would come from. Obviously Trion lost that argument and whatever "equitable" substitution they come up with is coming out of their pockets.
A rebate + a couple of thunderstruck trees would suit me fine

Yeah, I'm a long time player of Rift myself, and so have used that 10% discount many times.
In this case we have to remember that it was Trion's responsibility, not XL's, to make sure the 10% discount would be in place when they sold it to people. That's the law. It looks like what it comes down to is XL will charge them more than they're willing to pay to implement it, and their contract doesn't cover it as it should have. If they do end up giving back the exact equivalent, that'll be great. The wording of what they said suggests it won't be, but who knows.

It's been reported on a few sites that Trion still hasn't provided the 10% discount on marketplace items sold to Founders and Patrons in ArcheAge.
Trion's now confirmed on its forums that it won't honour this, apparently because it is "too difficult", and will offer something "equitable" instead. Nobody knows yet what that is, but since a 10% discount is hard to be anything other than a 10% discount, it'll be interesting to see how this goes.
Not sure about anyone else but I received 5 week of free game time .....pretty good start for a 10% discount
"And lastly, the 10% patron discount will take effect in the form of a 10% bonus to Credit Pack purchases beginning later today. In addition, the 10% bonus credits from any Credit Packs purchases made after Head Start while you were a patron will be granted later today. This is something we’re able to roll out independently, without adding more workload on the game’s developer. As such, we’ve agreed that this is the best way to get a great benefit into your hands as rapidly as possible."
So this isn't equitable, since founders don't get the discount promised on their inclusive credits, and nothing is granted for credits purchased via Apex, as originally promised.
"Hey we screwed you once with this already, but buy credits now and we'll give you 10% off...we promise..hah, hahah, Hah! HAAHAH! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH! MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH"
Edit: I think I misread. So this means if I bought the 49.99 pack and got 2000 credits, I will now see 200 credits available?

If you bought a credit pack (nothing else) you'd get 200 extra. If your credits were part of any founder or starter pack, you get nothing and no discount.
Originally posted by TiamatRoar Mathematically speaking, a 10% discount lets you buy more items for the same amount of RL $money$ than a 10% increase in credit purchases....
Yes, a 10% bonus on credits works in Trion's favour (no surprises there), plus you have to spend more money on top. There's no discount at all now, so nothing on Apex credit purchases, and nothing from packs. Also any founders who bought credits before head start get nothing. It's not remotely equitable, and there's a very bad reaction to it on the official forums.

I can't believe they're considering stand-alone credit purchases to be a different case than credits bought as part of a bundled package - i.e. founders or starter packs.
Not even remotely equitable to exclude credits that came with the founder's packs.
It just boggles the mind what they consider equitable over there,
