Starter question

Hi all! I'm giving this game a whirl later tonight. I'll be starting on the Naima server if anyone cares.

I was hoping for some starter tips. I was thinking of rolling an Auramancer! My main interest is in the crafting + land grabbing/ terraforming aspects of the game. Any beginner tips?

Waiting for something fresh to arrive on the MMO scene...

Just as a heads up...  You probably wont be able to get land.  I have played since pre-release and I haven't been able to find anything larger than a single 8 x 8.  There are hackers that gobble the land up before real players can possibly do it, you can buy land but that usually goes for close to 1k for a 16 x 16.

Do with this what you will :-)

Could you elaborate on that a bit? how exactly does one "hack" the land?

I haven't played AA. From what I've read, there's some kind of bot/program that identifies land for sale and buys it faster than any normal player can.

In AA you can only claim land in designated spots.  Most of this land was grabbed up by guild zergs during pre-launch within the first hour or two in the safe zones and within a few days after launch in the PvP zones.

If I want to get land at this point in the game I have two options buy it from someone selling (have to watch for scammers and its super expensive) or look for plots already owned by someone who didn't pay their taxes.  So basically if I have a 16 x 16 every week I have to pay taxes if I don't then the plot will be demolished at a specific time, let's say 11/4 @ 16:51.  Right at that exact time people will gather around that plot and the fastest person that can position their farm/house can place it there... So you will see like 20 people gathered around waiting to spam the button, except that's not the real challenge, hackers have figured a way to drop a false packets into the game that will claim that land the millisecond that it's available without even being anywhere close to the land.  This pretty much makes getting land limited to paying ridiculous amounts of gold, which subsequently it's hard to make gold without a farm.

I doubt Trion will do anything about this issue because the game has been out for 2 years in Korea and the hacks still exist.

    Forget about land.

Choose classes that revolve around using a bow.

Forget crafting seriously, get to Hasla and grind there for gear till the random number generator gives you something better. Hasla will be quicker.

This too... If you plan to do large scale PvP or run any of the max level dungeons pick a ranged class or healer.  Melee is basically useless in this game as most people won't take melee DPS with them for raids because the healers cant manage to heal both melee DPS and Tank because there is no mana management abilities in the game.  As far as PvP goes it's mostly zerg type PvP where if you're melee as soon as you get close enough to hit something you get CC'd and zerged down in 2 seconds.  So again ranged with strong AoE DPS is preferred.

You will never get land bro. Just forget about land.

As others have stated, the best way to enjoy this game is to rush to 50 and start the grind. If you stop to smell the roses you are going to realize just how terrible those roses smell.

Also, join a large guild with lots of resources. You will thank me in the end.

You'll also want to get a trade cart ASAP, so you can begin making trade runs.  Then you, too, can experience the joy of griefers using their trade carts to block other carts from passing, without being able to do a damned thing about it.  Report them?  Good luck.  Trion fully supports this "sandbox" behavior.

I actually think they've fixed the hacking for land. Maybe not, but the last three house burnings I went to were won by people right there next to me. At least one of them said thanks when people congratulated them.

I'm not sure of that, but I think it's so. I know the 20+ I went to before that I checked and almost universally the person who won wasn't at the site, many times they didn't even show up online. I've seen the same person win 4 in a row the whole time showing up in a zone on the other side of the world.

Still, most burnings in Arid land have a group of people trying to win land. you're much better off running trade packs until you have enough gold to buy. The sad part to me is that you're probably supporting the gold trade when you do.

Back to Starter Tips I would say you don't really need any. 0-50 isn't a long journey even for a semi-casual player. It's all quest hub stuff for the most part and you want to at a minimum follow the quest hub game up to the point where you get your mount, Glider, 8x8 scarecrow and Donkey.

They're all pretty easy to get.

here are some tips from a guy who has 2 level 50s in GHA gear with his Hasla weapon

forget about the land you will be lucky to find an area to put down a small 8x8 farm ... and thats extremely rare.

if you want to become a crafter get patron if you are lucky enough to find land ... you HAVE to get patron or go afk for long periods of time to build labor.

Classes - Archer this game should be named Archerage. 90% of the people you will run into will have archery as their main form of damage.

Don't play a healer - I have a healer and the game does not want you, XLgames made a kneejerk reaction to healers ... as i understand it healing power use to be based on magic power and intelligence. Healer/Mages were too powerful so XLgames created Healing power BUT forgot to itemize the game properly in order to accomodate for this new stat.

don't believe anyone selling land unless you learn about their reputation ... most who are selling land are trying to scam you. which by the way Trion full supports scamming in this game.

expect the most vile, garbage, cesspool of player 1) its a PVP game ... and we all know how civilized PVPers can be. 2) its a free to play game and we also know how those communities are (im looking at you LoL). I mean i ran a dungeon with a guy named "F***yourmother" and another group with "P***ypounder" without the stars.

    so yea

Forget about crafting and land for the time being.  Also the quest hubing slows quite a bit at 20.  Maybe I just hate quest hubs so much that I'm not grinding them as much as I should.  I'm only lvl 38 and ready bash my head against something sharp.  You can grind some levels here and there by making hereafter stones.  But you need money and labor to do that effectively.  No way you could gather that much raw stone in the open world, look to the market for the mats.

It's just a shame PvE (mob hunting not questing)is sooo unviable for leveling/loot or really any kind of progression.  Also the mob loot tables are the absolute worst in the genre.

There are a lot of important unique features that this game has that many others in the genre don't.  And they do have a great level for attention to detail in the world and their crafting and farming systems.  They are to be commended for much of it.  Just don't expect to make a lot of "progress" without a ton of grinding.

OP truthfully the game is a bag of poop.  I have played since pre-launch and just recently left because the game feels like beta only with a huge community of douchebags, hackers, and scammers.

FFXIV has a way better crafting system, you can own a house but they are in instanced zones.  You may want to check that out.

  • jdizzle2k13jdizzle2k13 Member UncommonPosts: 251

Find a guild would be my suggestion.  If you want to get serious into farming and crafting, there are some guilds out there that have members with multiple plots of land, and one of them may be able to let you use some of their land to grow crops or tend livestock.

Don't ask me about buying land, because although I have Patron now, I haven't tried to buy land off of anyone and I've heard all the scammer horror stories on my server (Inoch) lol.

So you picked Auramancy as your first skill tree.  It's a great choice, though I would never have thought to pick it first.  What would you like your character to be?

For a ranged physical damage character, Primeval (Auramancy/Archery/Shadowplay) is a popular choice.

A good caster spec with auramancy is Arcanist (Auramancy/Sorcery/Witchcraft).

If you want to heal (and have someone who can help you level or to level with) you can be a Cleric (Aura/Vitalism/Songcraft), but you're not going to do a lot of damage with healing weapons.

I haven't given much thought to good melee specs with Auramancy, but I think you should experiment and find the right combination for you.

And if you ever find the need to change up and try something different, just go to a Skill Manager or Priestess of Nui, and for a fee they will help you change your skillsets.

    Good luck and have fun.

Would an Auramancer Occult Songcrafter work well? Especially if playing with 2 friends?

In a group for PVE, just about anything works. For solo PVE or for PVP some things work a lot better than others.

If you want to play a caster, two of the better all-around builds that can handle any of the 3 situations above are Daggerspell (Sorcery, Witchcraft & Shadowplay) and Demonologist (Sorcery, Witchcraft and Occultism.)

I have no idea how Auramancy and Songcraft work with Occultism. Songcraft and Auramancy are both mostly defensive and buffing skill lines.

If you want to play around with builds, Jamellahouse is probably the best. Just remember that currently the cap is level 50, not 55.

Basically, what people are saying is... if you plan on playing the game the way you want to you should pick another game. I agree with them. I just started playing and even though I'm around level 20 I have realized that I cannot spend most of my time doing non-combat pursuits as I am unable to do so as all the land is taken up. If you are looking for a game to progress only by crafting and trade you should go and play EVE, you can stay in HiSec and play the way you want to and have a lot more fun than being forced to level and play in a way you don't want to just to progress.

    This..

    I am done.

Ok out of all honesty, *Auramancer* isn't a class, it's just a skilltree. For everybody who doesn't plan to get Archemaster title (All skilltrees to max), I just think of them as stupid. I was trying to explain it once to someone but he kept saying "well I play however I want to". While that aspect is 100% true, to lock in in a real class, say Blighter (than something fake like "Auramancer"), you just totally lost the game at versatility. Geez, it has sandbox component, live a little.

About the "land grabbing" and "terraforming", you just haven't really done any real research and post something like this to try your luck. Seriously, why nobody just play the game but post something and wish others to play for them? As for land, if you don't hack nor using stupid macros with every tiny detail plans, on top of having lots of time available, you won't get any, ANY at all at this late stage of game, simply due to greedy people who are hoarding everything by themselves. Besides, F2P can't own land. So the terraforming is rather a bit mis-advertised. You don't really "terraform" any place; I mean, I don't even understand when someone talks about "oh whatever you do, really do impact the world" seriously. All you could do about terraforming is just to plant something, then guard it if someone saw it, and they definitely would come for maturity, then pvp comes, ect, ect.

Anyways, I am happy with the game in some ways, but just the community.. I mean, why everybody aim for the top and grab every little land as possible while leaving none for the newbie or someone who would really need? On the flip side, I know if I could've, I would have gotten as much land for myself too. I guess that's how the game is supposed to be played this way.

I made it to level 32 and I think the games gets annoying.  I just got the quest to get the 16x16 scarecrow, but actually getting it is NOT easy.  You have to row / swim / find a guild with a big ship to get across the water.  I tried to row across with a trade pack and almost made it to the docks, but got ganked. I was out my gold / trade and the money I spent on materials to craft the trade pack.  The questing is annoying to me.  Everytime I turn in a quest I cringe waiting to see if another !!!!!!!!! pops up.  I have patron status so I dont have a problem with labor points, but there is no land.  I found room for my small scarecrow, but that is it.  I have not run into bots yet they pretty much wiped them out I believe, but from what I hear on my server one guy (Minti) owns the majority of the land.  Someone said you need a farm cart which is true and helpful, but to build one you need a thunderstruck log which cost 300g or you can get lucky and try to farm one at a less than 1% clip.  I am undecided what i am going to do in the game now.  Definitely think you need to be in a guild for this game to do crafting / trade runs...

Well.... apparently I can't log in.

I logged in, got to level 3 and noticed I was lagging horribly (3 seconds, no rendering of characters) so when I went to re-log, it now says I can not connect and to check my settings.

    Um. Wut.

Yeah there have been some issues the past couple of days.  I think it mostly has to do with the Auroria patch.

I haven't had too much issue today logging in but I did yesterday.  Hopefully they're ironing it all out.
