Quitting because of blatant cash grab and p2w features. What now though?

wfsaxtonwfsaxton Member UncommonPosts: 73

I paid for two $150 starter packs before launch and played every day, for hours.  I love the features of this game, but the f2p/p2w nature, along with the latest cash grab, have killed it for me.  Unfortunately, I don't know where else to go now.

Anyone have any suggestions (that aren't EvE)?

I suggest staying whatever the financial cost.

    Firefall.

All they have to do at this point is add more PvE content like the current Headless Horseman event surrounded by open world PvP and that game will be balls out. I've had more fun soloing this event than i've had in a while gameplay wise. The game is really maturing and I see it turning into something special as long as it can stay financially afloat.

I'm pretty much on my way out from Archeage as well, but I have to say it's been a very interesting experience. By far - my favorite times in this game were the 'Alpha' test. I joined from Day 1 that they made founders packs available. Best times i've had in a game in years.

What I realized is that everyone I was playing with was on an even playing field. There was no cash shop. In 1.0 the profressions were all decent and profitable, nui tears existed, and of course no f2p. When they patched to 1.2 and released the cash shop, the game simply changed. It was not nearly as fun for me. Professions got crapped on. Archeum and TS were extremely rare. So many negative things. I probably should have quit at this point, but I had hope that Trion would bring the game back to a better spot.. and they did.. sort of.

Yet at the end of the day, they make some really questionable decisions with the limited amount of power they do have.  I don't see this game as a positive experience and it's simply not fun for me anymore. I said many times that Alpha would probably be the best days this game will ever see, and for me it was.

I am a bit bummed they released the pay TS trees so early as well as the t2/t3 Hasla weaps. The economy is all over the place! I just got my fish boat and I think once my patron is out in Jan/Feb I will catch up on some PS4 games. I figured this would be a bit of a cash cow, but I just think they are doing everything too quickly. Still some of the most fun moments in an MMO I've had in many years though. Well worth trying, but I can see now that this is not a long term MMO.

I have played this longer than most MMOs in many years. Lots of good non-MMO games out and coming out though lately.

Well OP, I think that is why the game has a cash shop, because XL know that they have the only fantasy sandbox worth playing right now.

There is no competition in this specific Market. There are sandbox games, there are RPGs, and there are MMOs. There are no AAA Sandbox MMORPGs (except EvE) with a large following other than Archeage.

Do I think this game would work better with purchase price and a subscription only model.. sure. But I know for almost a fact that they would have made less money at least at this point in the game. Long term.. who knows? I think if enough people leave or once Black Desert launches in the West we'll see things change. I don't doubt Alpha is better than the official launch, however there is a lot of fun to be had in AA. Especially if you don't worry so much about the cash shop.

Looking forward to: Crowfall / Lost Ark / Black Desert Mobile

The Repopulation looks promising and if you pledge $25 you can get in the alpha at the end of this month.  EQNext is also a possibility but I dont know when that one is coming.

Take a break from the mmo genre. Play Binding of Isaac: Rebirth.

Yes it's a good time to take a small break from mmorpg and play the new Dragon Age.

This is what I'd suggest as well.

The gear you'll end up with will be very competitive even with those who've spent a LOT in the cash shop.

This above theory might make someone a 100 years old and stuck in an MMO which cannot offer FUN.

This is exactly what I meant when I said the "player driven economy" is an illusion and doesn't exist. No player(s) will ever be allowed to drive this economy. Trion will see to that.

DM, I totally agree with the finally point you made here. However, each of us you, me, and the many, many out there that do not frequent discussion forums play their games in different ways. If a game becomes too tedious and simply isn't fun or just feels like you are "falling behind", then for THAT player alone the game might well be "put on the shelf".

I would suggest staying if you feel you are part of a warm and understanding community that has the ability to support you. Remember, OP you can still farm and have co-ownership of land if you have found a friend in your guild with land and is willing to put you in his/her "family"

DM, this thread comment you made is much, much easier for me to read. I hope you will return to being a bit more positive and inclusive. It really does feel better when you work with people even if you disagree.

I whole heartedly agree, I liked the 1.0 state of Archeage both in the lack of a cash shop and the features of the game. It was only a week after 1.2 came out that I left Alpha. I also only played 3 weeks post-launch after simply not enjoying the game and being disgusted Trion has hosted such p2w features.

You might not be able to directly buy power in the cash shop, but when I can buy apex and exchange that for gold in game that can be a huge advantage. I don't even have to craft anything all I have to do is hit up the auction house and buy my way to greatness!

My big deal is not being able to own a house or 16 x 16 farm plot, as a patron im not gonna support it any more till I can have those. I would also bet im not along.

in the meantime the people you sold your Apex to makes his way to to the cash shop and buys subscription time/ regrade scrolls and make his way to greatess free of RL money, yes.

That makes lots of winners through different options, don't you think ?

All you have to do in any game is go to a 3rd party account sale site and buy a raid geared/PvP geared character, WoW, ESO, Rift, you name it this option always exists.

The difference is where your money goes - does it go back to dev studio (cash shop) or some other gold/character selling company?

The option of spending real money for greatness is in every game.

So now this is your line of defense? Yes this type of thing has always been there, but devs/publishers didn't do us any favors by building this stuff into the game, they simply did it because they saw how successful the black market has been in offering it.

At least you admit now that AA cash shop gives advantages and therefore it's completely p2w in my eyes.

I can out buy any play time you might have put forth in the game simply by swiping my credit card.  It takes time to make gold to be able to buy the items you mentioned above and I can just simply bypass that grind and just pay.  In the past MMO companies would make a concerted effort to try to control gold buying in their games in order to protect the game's economy.

Now most of the F2P games even some sub games like EVE and Wildstar have resorted to selling currency for real life money.  In my opinion this has really tainted the MMO scene and I don't see it going away any time soon. There are some games that get F2P  right though and AA is not one of them.

Its not a line of defense - it is reality.

The option of "buying greatness" exists everywhere - not only in gaming.

Again would you rathet have cash go back to devs or 3rd party gold sites?

I'd rather it go back to the way it was (SUB only), whether that's good for companies or not is another discussion. That's neither here nor there when it comes to my personal experience in a game.

    ArcheAge is unique.

Some love it, some hate it, some just considered a "meh" mmorpg, but is still unique.

So no, you wont find a substitute in current market, sry.
