So I played this game for a couple months and got to level 46. My opinion of the game is that it is a solo game with a shallow storyline. I like to play mmorpgs to make friends and to explore the virtual world with them. This game is very linear and after playing the game for two months and getting to level 46 I never needed to play the game with anyone else.
The storyline doesn't encourage you to meet anybody or form friendships. The only time you ever group with anyone is if you do a dungeon through dungeon finder which puts you together with other players from different servers. Everyone in the game is in their own little world doing their own thing and nobody is interested in sharing the game with other people. I like to join a guild and be a part of a community with voice chat and all of that jazz. I did join a guild but people rarely did anything with each other.
The city is so linear that they have multiple zones just for one city. The world doesn't feel open and the loading screens take quite some time to load a zone. There are a lot of invisible walls everywhere too which is irritating. What is more irritating is there are places where you can actually fall so it is inconsistent.
I enjoy pvp but this game did not do it well. They have this thing called the wolves den which requires no skill and has nothing interesting about the small arena.
This is my rant concerning my time playing the game... what are your thoughts?
I'm not going to berate you OP, you seem like a good guy. My thoughts are... that this is not the MMO for you.
The main problem I have with someone of your mindset is that you expect the game to condition the making of friends and comrades. This is an MMO and not your prom date, you don't have to wait for someone else to make the first move. I have many people in my friends list I can hook up with, as well as a linkshell for all of us to talk through, plus I have other linkshells for monster hunting etc whom we chat and do things together.
You get out of it as you put into it, but this game does not hold your journey, it expects you to play like an MMO player and be proactive in your search for companions and friends.
I'll give you that the wolves den is not a good catalyst for PVP, its essentially arena play and it really requires some of the pvp unlocks for it to be consistantly fun and competitive. The Front line pvp is where the pvp fun is, but this is sadly at the end game, could of done being front and centre, but in honest PVP is not this games focus. If that's yours, then you'll do yourself a diservice in this one.
As for the inviz walls and loading, I cn see how this bothers some, myself, not at all... why would I let it bother me. Does not break my immersion at all. Just mine and 2.5 million others opinion mind you.
So what you are saying is that unless you are forced to group you will not ? That is your own fault is it not. You can form groups to do anything you want. The game caters to people who want to solo too and what is wrong with that it gives people a choice. You're just finding fault. No point discussing this with someone who is blind to the choices.
Just because a game allows you to do things solo does not mean you are then precluded from making friends or doing content in groups. The tools are available use it. Not every aspect of a game has to be group orientated nor does it have to be solo either it is a mix of both.
Again read my posts up above. This is a multiplayer game, your supposed to be playing with others. There are many good final fantasy stories, among other rpg stories for you to play alone.
In the end who loses? People that want to play alone or people looking to play cooperatively with others?
Your free to enjoy the millions of other solo games, while others loose what couldve potentially have been a great multiplayer experience.
Now all games offer solo experiences over cooperative experiences, with the very few options being instanced dungeons, in every modern mmo.
Its no longer cooperative based gameplay.
Also, you say you can form a group to do anything you want. What? did you see what I listed? Wait can I do early storyline quests with my friends? Can me and my friend do job quests together? Hell, maybe we wanna team to do all the quests in a zone? Can we?
Nope, endgame coil, story line instanced dungeons that are in different order depending on starting city.
WoW, I can't play with my friend until I solo to 50, we can do some fates, but LOL, can we? Oh wait she started in Uldah, me and Gridania, so we cant do fates until we get through a bunch of solo story quests that we cant experience together?
No matter how many times you say youve played the game, everything you say make sit sound like you havent because you dont seem to have the slightest clue what youre talking about.
1) The only solo forced content in the entire game is the main story instances and class/job quests. EVERYTHING besides that can be done in groups. Choosing not to do it does not mean it doesnt exist. You act like the game is forcing you to run dungeons with PUGs and prevents you from forming a group of just your friends to run them with. For some odd reason you seem hellbent on insisting that if the game doesnt force you to do it with a premade group, the option to do it doesnt exist. Sorry kid but thats not how things work. You can group up with some friends and play through every single dungeon in the game without having to join up with those evil dirty people from other servers *GASP!*
2) Dungeons do NOT go in different orders depending on your starter city. Only he content leading up to 15 has you stuck in your starter city. Afte rthat, you get the envoy missions to visit the other cities then you start on the dungeons which will ALWAYS be in the order of Sastasha, then Tam-Tara, then Copperbell. FFS those dungeons all even have different level requirements of 15, 16, and 17 in order to even enter them. It would be impossible to do Copperbell as part of your level 15 quest.
3) Just because you dont like the way something can be done, such as using the Duty Finder to group with PUGs for dungeons, doesnt suddenly mean it isnt cooperative. Cooperative simply means you are working with other people, it does not mean you have to have a preformed group to do it.
4) Nothing is preventing you from playing with your friend aside from select story / class based missions. In fact my FC, which has over 400 members, constantly has people forming groups to level together either with new players / characters or with alts. You very well can go ahead and pick up all the regular quests in a zone and do them with a friend. The only quests you cant do together are the ones where you have to join an instance by yourself, which is typically the previosuly mentioned story / job quests.
5) The only people losing are the one's who can't think for themselves even the tiniest bit and do things for themselves, like put together an organized group to get things done, without whining and ragequitting because the game doesnt hold their hand and tell them that they absolutely have to group to get it done.
WoW, I can't play with my friend until I solo to 50, we can do some fates, but LOL, can we? Oh wait she started in Uldah, me and Gridania, so we cant do fates until we get through a bunch of solo story quests that we cant experience together?
I think the first dungeon is level 15 you can group for that and continue grouping for subsequent dungeons. As for the Uldah and Gridania example in Everquest if you started an erudite in Erudin and your friend and dwarf in Kaladim then he would be in Butcherblock and you in Toxxulia. You won't be seeing each other anytime soon for sure. You would have had to in that game started quite close to play together and Everquest was considered a highly reliant in group mechanic game.
It's lvl 15, but depending on your city you start with a different dungeon, so you still can't play together.
In FFXI, you can choose any city to begin in, with any job.
The main problem I have with someone of your mindset is that you expect the game to condition the making of friends and comrades. This is an MMO and not your prom date, you don't have to wait for someone else to make the first move. You know, I remember we used to say the same thing in FFXI, when people complained about waiting around for parties.
You expect things to just happen? You have to communicate, learn how to build parties, learn who to invite, build a list of people you know play during your time. Etc.
But see w/ FFXI, you needed others, the big difference and positive as its cooperative game.
In FFXIV, talking to people who bask in the idea that they can be antisocial is the exact opposite. Nor do we need to for things that don't require teamwork.
In FFXI, I wanted an OHat, I hit my friendslist, did /sea all and shouted with people in party in different areas. The thing is, people needed interaction.
In FFXIV, all your cooperative activities can easily be done with duty finder, removing the need to be social.
Plus, your playing a multiplayer game, it should be expected of everyone to play with others, b/c thats what multipolayer means.
FFXIV is very socializing MMO. It is up to you how much you want to socialize. I played FFXI for few years and that time i didn't know any better. But now today i won't play FFXI if you pay me to do it. Days of forced grouping are done for.
This is what happens when you support such a shallow design like Wow and every game like Wow,it gives developers like Square Enix and impression that is what the majority want.
Square Enix was never like this,i believe they actually were clueless as to why all the negative feedback in the beginning, they refused to believe it was their RUSHED effort. So when they hired Yoshi to take over the lead,he went on a mission sending employees to other high success games and took from them those ideas. It had NOTHING to do with not being like Wow,people scoffed the original release because it was a streamline shallower version of FFXI,going directly towards a Wow design.
Well if you consider Wow once held 65% of the market and other WOWesque copies most likely another 20-25% you soon realize how easily influenced a developer would be.
I don't play FFXIV because it is imo exactly a WOW copy and that is also imo the worst possible design for a MMO and has little to do with ROLE playing. The Square Enix fans never asked for this,we wanted a FFXI with updated graphics and some tweaks to make the game better.Instead Square said it couldn't be done, too costly,so they set out to make a new game because that would warrant a full sale price.Problem is they invested Soooooooooo much money and time into the new game engine and configuring it to make it work, they had to rush FFXIV.
Long story short, they needed or felt they needed to cater to the biggest market and in doing so gave away their trademark which is creativity and lost a lot of faithful FF fans.
However in saying that, there is NOTHING aside from a VERY small handful of games that are not Wowesque linear games out there and the majority are supporting that.So take it or leave it,the big difference is that in FFXIV you are imo getting the best possible linear Wowesque copy with the best graphics,so why would anyone support a cheaper design such as Wow or the many other copies.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
1) The only solo forced content in the entire game is the main story instances and class/job quests. EVERYTHING besides that can be done in groups.
Tsk... Tsk... "can" and "multiplayer" are two different things. "can" is the option while playing a multiplayer game means you complete activities with multiple players... does that not make sense to you? I dont get how you dont understand that
I remember when FFXI came out, the whole idea of a final fantasy being online is that you got to experience the story with your friends, b/c its always been a solo experience
So now we have an online solo experience, thats quite disappointing
4) Nothing is preventing you from playing with your friend aside from select story / class based missions. Snipped the other irellavence, but THIS, you confuse can with multiplayer again
Yeah, we can get all the spam quest, be in the same party and kill all the trash mobs, but thats not at all multiplayer, thats solo while being in the same hub world
although many quest require you to initiate yourself, the idea of killing a mob that calls for cooperation is different than killing trash mobs that can be soloed
a good example is divine might, where you NEED others to complete the quest, you need people to farm the pop items to start the fight, that all took cooperation, even at high levels, b/c you could always die in ro'meave if not careful, and heh dieing actually meant something in the game
the gods in Tu'lia, no way you could begin to solo these pre abysea, you had to play with others, b/c its a multiplayer game, again, you dont wanna play with others go play many of the solo games designed to be played alone
you cooperated with others to complete the quest, in some instances, you had to have a group just to reach a destination for a cut scene, which called for communication and cooperation
...because its a multiplayer game were you depend on others to complete activities
because the game doesnt hold their hand and tell them that they absolutely have to group to get it done.
Your saying this game doesn't hold your hand? You really are delusional.

Considering the success of FFXIV compared to its older version which tried to be very creative you are so very wrong. If anything it gained more fans.
But i don't know why i am replying to you. You never post to participate in discussion? You use these forums as a facebook update or personal blog entry.
Make a post with obvious bait hidden in somewhere and then never look back at the topic again.
It's lvl 15, but depending on your city you start with a different dungeon, so you still can't play together.
Absolutely false. The order for the dungeons is always the same. Satasha ,Tam Tara then Copperbell. What are you trying to pull with these lies ?
He clearly doesn't even play the game so don't expect any credible information from him. Some people just love to get up on soapbox and write lengthy posts.

SIgh this is so true. Its so not Japanese to give up, and thats exactly what they did.
I'm pretty sure you've spent more time trolling on this tread then you have played the game..
if you hate the game so much then shut up and don't play it period... why are you arguing over something you don't like to others who obviously like.
It's called Party Finder vs Duty Finder... you DO NOT have to just use duty finder... you have a CHOICE to solo or play with friends you are not FORCED to solo anything other then the class/story quests, and even then you are lead into new dungeons etc from the story quests.
I really hope you don't play this game cuz you are a cancer that doesn't wanna go away
This is my rant concerning my time playing the game... what are your thoughts?
You "like" making friends in mmorpgs yet you don't actually do it unless the game forces you.
People who want to make friends are open to being approached, and approaching, other people (people unlike you, since you are clearly not even trying). In this game and in any game. Don't act like there is no benefit to having friends in this game either. It makes the experience more fun and more efficient, as doing things with friends always does.
The only complaint you have here is that the game throws the ball to you as far as making friends is concerned and you don't like that. You have to be willing to put in the work for friendships to form, just like in real life. The game does not hold your hand.
Wow, I didn't realize this thread would get so popular! I enjoyed reading all of your posts and I think a lot of good points were brought up. Just to update you guys, I have started to play Guild Wars 2. I am a Sylvari ranger and I have experienced making three friends in the week I have played so far. When I logged on I talked in the main chat and found a friend right away who was lvl 80 and was willing to adventure with me. I have joined a small guild that has Teamspeak.
One of my favorite parts so far has been the exploration and it is fun to explore the different vistas with others, especially the hard ones that encourage you to ask for help. I have found that it is a lot more fun to play this game with at least one friend and the community has been very gracious. It is easy to make friends because even if they are at max level each area adjusts your level to the area you are in. There is never the inconvenience of being a different level or not at the same part of the story.
I find that the zones are very big and it feels very immersive. As a ranger player I have found my experience to by far superior to that of FFXIV. The combat is faster and less rigid. I am very happy with this new experience and I feel that Guild Wars 2 has everything that was lacking for me in FFXIV. My only complaint is I have not enjoyed my experience with pvp as much as I hoped. It takes a long time to kill anyone but I have been reassured by others that it is because I don't have a pvp build. I think I will revisit this part of the game when I reach max level.
The biggest thing that I have come to realize after reading through this thread is the basic fact is that there is rarely ever an incentive to ever be social or interact with anyone in FFXIV. I want an mmorpg to give me an incentive to group with others and to be social. If someone doesn't want to play with others then there should be an alternative and slower path to get to the same goal.

Selective reading at it's best and then deciding to play a game that is total antisocial compared to ARR is totally laughable. Again, you chose to be antisocial and blame it on the game. The game has plenty of incentives to be social. As people have pointed out, if you are antisoical in ARR you will not get anywhere in the game when it comes to progression. Again, selective reading at it's best.
I was just sharing my own personal experience with Guild Wars 2 compared to FFXIV. Sure Guild Wars 2 is not geared as much towards grouping as I would like, but there are not the same amount of restrictions as there are in FFXIV. You are not stuck in a story quest, you don't get stuck with people from another server on duty finder from what I can tell, and you arn't restricted by lvl difference.
Another thing that bothered me about the duty finder in FFXIV is that when you do the low level roulette you are stuck doing the same dungeons every day just to get a little more exp. That was a big reason I left the game because I would go crazy if I had to do the same dungeons over and over again with each class.

Call a game a friendless solo game but complain about having to play with others. FYI , you are not stuck in having to do anything. Let me make this clear, you chose to get stuck. Big difference.

I quite agree. They dangle a daily carrot in front of you and you feel you have to jump all over it!
But to actually make a decision for yourself and decide to group with a bunch of people for fun, nope can't do it.
No incentive. What a terrible game.
FFA Nonconsentual Full Loot PvP ...You know you want it!!

You unlock more dungeons as you level up and progress through the story. There's essentially a new dungeon every 3-4 levels past level 20, and there are 12 total dungeons before level 50, as well as the three Primal trials. I'm not sure how this isn't enough dungeons for a game that's a little over a year old. (all of these dungeons were in at launch as well)

Are you aware that GW 2 has something like megaserver technology. The people with whom you are playing with in an event could be guesting from another server. At least the people you see on your server on FFXIV are actually from your server. From what I recall the story quest on GW 2 is also solo. There was absolutely no need for me to group ever in GW 2 because you were autogrouped when you did the events.
You met someone on GW 2 and that experience changed your outlook of the game but the same could have happened in FFXIV .That does not make FFXIV a friendless solo game. In my honest opinion when I played GW 2 if not for the guild I was in no one talked or said anything during the champ trains in Queensdale. In fact it was truly a solo experience but that was my fault also since I decided to go other zones where no one was about . I hear things have changed now in GW 2 with regards to the champ trains but FFXIV in terms of grouping experience beats GW 2 hands down. However everything in games depends on what you put in. You made friends in GW 2 so your outlook changed but that was your imput you just did not bother to in FFXIV so you had a different experience.
The ludicrous thing is that if you look through some of the threads on GW 2 one of the oft lamented points people raised was the total lack of interaction as a result of the autogrouping. But here you are saying you found it more group friendly than FFXIV. I guess this is why there are so many games in the market and your opinion on FFXIV is just that , an opinion which is neither right nor wrong. Just like your thread is simply your personal opinion and in the light of what you said about GW 2 quite startling.

And we already told you that your personal experience isn't universal but you are somehow under the impression that it is.
Also i find it highly ironic that you call FFXIV anti social game and then go on to praise and enjoy the most anti social MMO that is GW2.

Long story short, they needed or felt they needed to cater to the biggest market and in doing so gave away their trademark which is creativity and lost a lot of faithful FF fans.

Wait, so you think FFXIV doesn't incentivize grouping enough, and the solution is to play GW2?
Wha???
Are you a friendless, solo person in real life?
If not, then why do you need "incentives" in a game?
Also, why do you wish a game to "force" you to group? Would you not rather choose your own path?
Games aren't the problem here.
FFA Nonconsentual Full Loot PvP ...You know you want it!!

Clearly the problem is with you and not FFXIV.
