Project Gorgon

asyndetonasyndeton Member UncommonPosts: 87

I found this mmorpg yesterday while perusing the internet.

http://projectgorgon.com/

It is actually quite fun. It is early in development, so it is lacking in some areas, but it really captures a certain feel that I look for.

It's a bit hard to explain, but definitely worth checking out. There's no page for it here at mmorpg.com.

I was immensely enjoying the tutorial. There is no hand holding, no classes (you level up skills as you use them). You learn other skills as you discover them in the world. The dungeons are non instanced, although there are zone lines.

Monsters are actually challenging.

There are puzzles to solve throughout the game world.

Talking with NPCs is very important.

Basically a lot of "old school" elements. Graphics are meh. Reminds me of EQ1 days. But hey, it is a nice game.

Early in development though, so it is not fully fleshed out. It is still a pretty small world... but the community seems pretty dedicated.

Link above if any of you all are curious, and sorry if this has been posted before. I just kinda stumbled on it yesterday and was surprised to find something I have been looking for.

I like it too,I  love how you learn skills and there are no levels.lots of fun things like getting a curse so some words you type in world chat turn into moooooo if you get turned into a cow lol..I will give it a try for sure when it launches.

Exactly. I love that the RPG part of the acronym is not just for show in this game.

Tried it out a few weeks ago. Really found it interesting, but gonna wait a bit more untill I try it again so I don't get biased or bored when it's actually more up and running :)

I enjoyed PG until I got turned into a cow and found out I was going to stay that way for quite a while......Also it seems to be taking an awfully long time to get anywhere.

I play it OP and is the only game i enjoy right now.

The graphics are actually not that bad,we just don't see a lot of assets because it is a VERY small team handling this with very little money.

If you max out the settings they are definitely better than EQ1 and more in line with every game except a few like FFXIV of course  is higher end .

It does everything the way i like ,except it is missing one aspect. The main guy in charge is trying to push more grouping but A not enough players yet and B there is no player to player combos,it is like every other game still a solo player within a group.  it is solo minded aside from healing others if you have that skill on and it seems some skills just passively hit others that are close by when you use them.

But i can't express enough how much a breathe of fresh air it is to NOT see those lame yellow markers over npc heads, that alone brings a smile to my face.

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

I concur with the OP.  Enjoying the sandbox elements.  The little things like bathing can influence how NPCs react to you... a lot of nice touches all around especially for an early alpha.

Anyone have a clue on the size of this game? Is it Vanilla WoW size, or Vanguard huge? And how is the population?

Death is nothing to us, since when we are, Death has not come, and when death has come, we are not.

It's a very cool early alpha game - very rough around the edges though.

Not sure on the size of the world but the population is small - its in the hundreds during prime time.

Thank you Kano. I started the download! I guess thats the best way to find out.

Looked through this, found it very interesting. It's a shame they didn't fund.

For starters they need to come up with the real title instead going by the codename.

I havent played a game in about 4 years which has made me actually stay up late and not care to mind my self imposed "bed time"

But last night I looked at the clock, I had sat down at about 10PM and it was 2AM by the time I logged out. Okay, 4 hours isn't all that long (compared to how easy it is to get really lost in some mmos...), but I only intended to do some fishing for a bit and maybe a quest  before turning in for the night...

Somewhere along the lines I just got distracted.

I take that as a good sign, I hope this game goes somewhere it has a good tone and feel to it.

I saw too that the kickstarter didnt fund when they last tried. I am guessing it was a lack of exposure issue. I hope they try again.

Seeing this game mentioned in another thread, I thought I would check it out. I have run into a problem. I download the Windows installer zip and when I unzip it, there is no ProjectGorgonWinLauncher.exe file unzipped, although it shows in my Winrar window ready to be unzipped. Since it seems others are playing this, I am feeling that this is a "just me" moment :)

I've looked about on their forums and see no mention of the installer not getting unzipped. Not sure if I want to create an account if I can not play.

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.

The download is a zip file and Windows can handle zip files natively. Try right-clicking the zip file and select "Extract Here" from the menu. It should extract it to a folder with the same name as the zip. You can move that folder anywhere you want before you install it.Alternatively there is a free archive utility you can use called 7-zip. It will handle zip, rar, 7z (it's own compression style), and many other archive formats.I just downloaded the zip file from Project Gorgon again to ensure the win launcher file still exists. Note that the game doesn't have a true installer yet. The win launcher program downloads the game and puts it in your AppData folder and create a launcher icon. If you don't want the files in your AppData folder there is a thread in the support forums describing how to install it elsewhere.
Thanks. I do have a registered version of WinRAR, and it was not working. Trying your "Windows Explorer" idea, it expanded nicely, with a strange message that I forgot to write down about the files being extracted :)

My problem isn't unzipping the thing but patching:

Project Gorgon server does not appear to be running right now.

Error: Could not resolve host: projectgorgon.com; Unrecoverable error in call to nameserver

I'd like to post a solution here but I'm not sure how to fix that. Might I suggest you try this link?

    http://projectgorgon.com/forum

I  would like but honestly can't help but there are many people who know more about networks than I do. There was a problem with a  patch during the last update and one of the players, forum name fingers and a really long name ingame, solved it within a short time. Maybe someone else can help you. So my suggestion would be to register an account on the forum and post it there. Not that I want the forum to have more registered users but it is the place you will most likely find a solution to whatever probelm you have. From my experiance there are some people who know a lot about that stuff.

edit: reminder that it is still an alpha and if you have a problem it is always good to make it known to the devs. Even if you wont like the game, it takes 5 min to help them make it work for everyone who might like it.
