I used WASD to move around and the mouse to adjust the camera. Thats on compact controls of course though. I don't know anyone who keeps the controls as is, at least not in the PC version.
Frankly, the mouse sucks in FFXI (as opposed to WoW, where it's done very well). My recommendation is that you get a game pad. FFXI was originally developed for the PS2 and it shows; it really does play best with a PS2-style game pad. Square reommends one of Logitech's, and that's what I use--a Rumblepad 2. It even gives you vibration function. With that, you have your two thumbs each on a joystick. The left joystick controls your movement and the right controls your camera. Works very well, IMHO.

yea i recommend you to also use the controler xD, it works great :P
