An old saw says something about the appeal of an "oldie but a goodie," and Square Enix is banking on it. Next year, the company's releasing an "enhanced" version of its 1997
Final Fantasy VII for PS4 based on the PC version of 2013. Young 'uns who just discovered FF during the era of HD hyper-realism might not be impressed, but gamers nostalgic for good old addictive RPG gameplay are in for a treat.

You say fear; I say common sense.
If SE changes anything in the remake there will be a bloodbath. If SE doesn't change anything there will still be a bloodbath. In both scenarios there is only one party to blame: Square-Enix. It would sell like hot cakes, but the backlash would be unprecedented.
Unfortunately only SE seems to understand this simple truth.
FFVII remake should be added as the perfect example to the dictionary under "lose/lose situation".
I'd love a true HD remake. Unfortunately, i think Hyanmen is right, even if SquareEnix does it's best. Which is the next big issue.. most r emakes are not exactly remakes, but the name and general setting reused for a completely new game. They would probably cut half the stuff and add some kill 10 rats quests to it, complete with changing the art style. And the overworld is DLC content, base game has only Midgar.
So maybe it's better this way..
I'll wait to the day's end when the moon is high
And then I'll rise with the tide with a lust for life, I'll
Amass an army, and we'll harness a horde
And then we'll limp across the land until we stand at the shore
I hope that the remake for the PS4 is better than for the PC. I have bought FF7 (all re-released versions actually) for the PC and it's still the same graphics as it was on the PS1, but only in a higher resolution...
I'm sure though that this PS4 version will be a smashing success. After all, how many PS1s are still out there in working order and how many FF7 versions for PS1 are still available? It's just one of those classic RPGs that you *MUST* have in your collection!

Personally I never understood why studios make game a specific console exclusive. Especially now that the PS4 and the Xbox one are so similar. Seems to be to be braindead marketing. There is no way Sony can come up with even close the cash that they would make on other console releases.
The trailer looks just like the ps1 version of the game. I've seen mod enhancements to the pc FF7 and they are much better.
I was expecting upgraded graphics/models like from crisis core or something. So this is just a ps1 port to ps4. Very disappointing.
This ^
This is something most devs seem to understand, and most gamers refuse to believe. While I would absolutely LOVE an HD remake of FF7 I also know the risks involved with doing so.
Artwork isn't generally as simple as just flipping a switch and going 'okay, now it's HD!'. You have to re-do a lot of the textures, the models, etc. And this means that the re-interpretation of such things will inevitabley be different than what each individual imagines in their minds. As a result you will have an unpredictable portion of the community that WILL backlash against the remake.
Maybe someone's favorite monster doesn't look good enough to them. Maybe they hate the way the new aeris looks. Because when you're changing characters made out of hexagonal cubes into things that actually look somewhat real, there are bound to be quite a few differences.
And as they say, the devil is in the details.
Agreed. For one reason or another, FF fans would get pissed about a remake. If four pixels of Cloud's emo tears are out of place during a cut scene, there will be much wailing and gnashing of teeth the world over.
There's no way to placate the majority of fans, so SE is making the sensible choice and not even trying, just releasing the game as it was all those years ago. People might bitch about the graphics looking dated (which they are), but will still appreciate and play the game for nostalgia's sake instead of screaming and carrying on about how Aeris' hair looks a half inch too short.
AN' DERE AIN'T NO SUCH FING AS ENUFF DAKKA, YA GROT! Enuff'z more than ya got an' less than too much an' there ain't no such fing as too much dakka. Say dere is, and me Squiggoff'z eatin' tonight!
We are born of the blood. Made men by the blood. Undone by the blood. Our eyes are yet to open. FEAR THE OLD BLOOD.

Problem with a remake is the original developers who made Final Fantasy 7 are gone. It used to be Square, now it's Square Enix, and honestly Square Enix has yet to release a game that isn't riding off the past glory days (aka everything they release is known IPs, sequels, prequels, etc.).
They are talented at making things look pretty... That's about it.
Smile
Obviously that couldn't have been done on PS3...
This is overhyped a tad and they should give the poor PS3 owners this game as well, instead of dumping on them, but yeah it obviously can only be done on PS4. /sigh
A cool game I can get for my nephew some day. Old PS1 and PS2 games look like GARBAGE on big new flat screens. When I play old games I play them on a PSP or Vita.
Nobody seems to respect the idea that this will make the game playable on a 55" screen the way is was meant to be seen in it's original glory.
I really wish you had chosen your title words better, or added Non HD remake.
For those short lived few seconds before rushing to play the video, totally skipping what you wrote (sorry), I honestly felt the joy of Christmas again, but now I'm back to my Scrooge persona.
I hope ya'll get coal for Xmas. Or a nuclear bomb with 2 seconds remaining.
I agree with you but not for the reason that it would take more work, its just that they are lazy. Not just them, but most companies are now. PS1 and even some PS2 games were so packed with content and the ability to free roam, then it just got smaller and smaller. So they try to sacrifice quality to piggy-back off of what someone else said earlier, the names of a series and such. XII was pretty well crafted and is quite overlooked. The story wasn't really the greatest and half the characters you really liked or didn't really care about (Balthier was awesome). Aside from that though, there was hours up on hours of content to keep you busy. X is a love/hate for me because the story was ok, the characters were ok, blitzball was awesome (played 100 hours of that alone), but everything else was kinda meh. X-2 was garbage. There's nothing they need to change for 7 except the graphics, there's a few ps2 games that had multi-discs and were really good, so its no excuse for SE to not do it at least to PS2 graphics lol.
You're joking right? Playtimes are just as long if not longer now than they used to be in the past for similar type games.
They messed up final fantasy franchise too badly beyond repair.
Funny thing is, brave/default is the best title they came up with for years and it is 3DS exclusive.
