ED is a sandbox MMO, in the sense that you have no endgame and the only goals are those that you set. So you can approach the game as a grind, were all you do is make credits to get the next size up in ships. But you don't have to do that, you can set your mind to master and fully upgrade the starter ship, find out how far you can push the little guy (I did this in the beta). If you want to go mine for a while do that, want to go bounty hunting well do that (well when they fix the rep problem anyway), pirate? Yep you can do that as well. While there are no story lines that you have to follow there are both player events and Dev events and story arcs that are created. The game is not perfect, and is missing some features that you would expect in an MMO, but the underlying gameplay is just amazing.
Again, I feel the need to explain ED is about as much of a sandbox MMO as Team Fortress is. (Both are not)
Max 32 players? Team Fortress is the same.
Persistant Economy? Team Fortress has hats that can be sold/traded and persist between servers and sold offline the same as the economy works in ED.
Able to play on an empty server by yourself? Team Fortress is the same way.
You can't argue that just because the game has currency and trading that persist between the instances (or servers for team fortress) that it is a MMO. It is the same as a Team Fortress 32 players per server death match just hidden a bit better.
And If you take a look at the official forums I'm not the only person who thinks this. Many are doing charge backs and getting refunds and there is even a lawyer providing an open email for people to us to get full refunds based upon the false advertising of being an "mmo" that I am talking about. The game is flat out claiming to be and selling itself as something it is not.
If you are so simple that you believe you're playing a mmo, when you are playing the same thing as a first person shooter except with auto-connecting between servers based on location, the more power to you. It is a fake mmo in every way and people are rightfully getting refunds based upon that.

You still trolling?
Does the game world change for everyone based on players actions in TF? Nope, well it does in ED, you can work for different factions and increase their standing in the system, up to creating civil wars for that faction to take over, you can expand the major factions to new areas. Does everyone play in the same game world as each other in TF? Nope, well they do in ED. It is an MMO, it just does not have all the communications that you whine about. No, many are not doing charge backs or getting refunds, that is just you spitting out BS. Here I will even link the forums.
ED is an MMO, it is just not a guild based MMO. You can still group, you can have in game voice comms for up to 6 players, its just more work then most people expect from an MMO.

Indirectly affecting npc factions doesn't exactly sound like "changing the game world" to me, sounds like a cheap gimmick or like high scores in a single player game. X player does something in his own instance, and that changes the score of a faction. And yes, players play on the same maps in team fortress in different instances (servers), which is exactly the same you are describing.
You must be very simple, enjoy your single player game with persistant high scores for npc factions indirectly affected by players. That is not a mmo.
I don't consider a game an MMORPG when it doesn't even have the simplest of social interaction tools available for an MMORPG: An in-game chat box. Sorry, but some people like me don't enjoy talking to people through voice chat. Social interaction is a huge part of MMORPGs, without it, E:D is not an MMORPG, but a single player game that requires an always online connection (and if anyone buys the developer's excuse, sorry to break it to you, but it is 100% for DRM reasons) and just so happens to have some co-op features.
Of course opinions are opinions, but to be an MMORPG requires at least some fundamental aspects that all MMORPGs share in common with one another, and yes, one of those would be having a functioning chat in-game.
I don't think it matters much if it is labeled as an MMO or not, it is not like a MOBA which is definitely not an MMO.
This game seem to have some elements of an MMO, such as a shared online, persistent world which lives on when you log of. But the fact that they have instanced it to such a degree that you can only have 32 players in an instance is quite limiting.
I would personally not consider such super-instanced games as MMO but one cannot deny that it is not much different from STO which is considered an MMO but I dont feel it plays much as one. But then again tons of modern MMORPGs are super instanced like that.
I think the more important question is if the game is good. So far I am not convinced by the visuals, no 3rd person view and lack of meaningful activities. The combat looked pretty lacklustre as well.

It has an ingame chat box, so there you go, you can consider it an MMORPG.
I would not call ED a MMORPG, it has very little RPG elements. But it is an MMO.

The problem is you can only chat with players directly around you, so there is no way to meet up with people in different areas and that is a major problem that many players are complaining about.
And again, by your very definition Team Fortress and Call of Duty are MMO's. (Not the case and I see many more people disagreeing with you than the other way around)

Nope they are not. Nothing I have said would indicate that. But heck you are just trolling and spitting out BS. But when you don't have an argument you make up lies, like you keep doing. Nothing I have said has indicated that TF or CoD would be MMO's, heck I even said TF is not, but keeping trolling its fun for a laugh.

The only difference between ED and games like Team Fortress are that you automatically join a 32 player instance instead of picking the server yourself. To quote you this game is lacking RPG features, and essentially the economy and trading and NPC factions work in exactly the way they do in Team Fortress. (NPC faction stats work like player statistics or high scores in other games)
More people are disagreeing with you than agreeing on these forums, and for good reason. Also many are asking for refunds because of exactly what I am saying. I am just hoping people don't support a product that markets itself on a lie. People buying into alphas and falsely marketed games are a problem in games today and I feel obligated to tell people that are on the fence about this game the truth. You seem to be a dev or someone very personally invested in this game and defend it blindly.
Here is 111 page post on the official forums of people asking for refunds FYI : (If 100+ page post of paying customers complaining about this doesn't make you wonder if you might be wrong on this I'm not sure what would)

I figure the game is definitely worth 35£ but just so you know what to expect:
Multi player ~ barely at least right now and chat feature needs serious work
massive ~ yes it has a massive universe thus you do not run into people all that much
space sim ~ yes close enough
voice commands ~ the game does not have voice commands, when you see videos with people issuing voice commands it is because they are using a 3rd party program called "voice attack".

Well sure its space, people congregate at trading points and space stations or around rare resources. Its space after all its huuuuuuge!. I am aware that voice attack is a third party program but its so fitting for the game.
Im sure communication will be improved upon some, but we are probably seeing a quicker push out of the game due to the holiday season.
Ill let yall know how it is after this weekend. (got next week off to play away).

Cool I have been in beta so was just letting you know what was what as from your post you didn't seem to know about voice attack etc.
As for congregating at space stations you will find the game is instanced so that only so many people can be together at once so don't expect huge 100 real people fleets etc.
Enjoy the game!

All requesting refunds. I am too lazy to list anymore but there are different players asking for refunds on every single page.
Yep that is a very small number of players, and if you had looked on you would have found that many of them post over and over again. Heck that does not even come close to being a few. FD has stated that they have sold more then 200k copies. So as I said very few, thanks for proving my point.
Wow, now this thread makes me want to poke myself in the eye, good job guys :P
Stop thinking gauges and level of : it is massive (one vast interconnected universe holding tens of thousands of players at once), it is multiplayer (you can play or against other players) and it is online (interwebsthingie). These are facts, no matter how you look at it or troll about it.
Thank you and you're welcome.
Now, it is a fun game to me, very spacey simulationney and makes me want to discover stuff around. So I'm playing and you should watch a few vids/twitch to see if it could work for you
OP, you keep trying to redefine MMO, it isn't massive unless you can get a large number of players together at the same time. Numbers vary, but 500 seems to be a good rule of thumb, and this game (as well as many others these days) falls short.

I believe the Massively part refers to the number of people that can simulanteously play the game, not how many people there are in a given area of the game. The Multiplayer bit is obvious as is the Online requirement.

It do. This is an online games but it's not an MMO. Good game tho.
One of these days we will see discussions on these forums on wether a game is fun or not and not focused on if it meets some random forum users definition of an MMO.

Quoting out of context is slimy so I've fixed the above. Elite fits the definition above and is a persistant world, if that's not close enough then I don't know what is.

I'm not sure what your point is. Anyway, who has actually played the game?
As someone who has played MMORPG's for some twenty years, I'd definitely put this game into the "Online Multiplayer Game" genre.
Only being able to interact with 31 other players at a time nor able to communicate outside my small instance is in no, way, shape, or form "Massively".

Smile
My gaming blog

LOL you might want to reread that thread, most of those posts are by only a few members. NVM you don't know how many of them are real Paying costumers, as anyone can make an account. Like I said, you only spit out BS.
im going to pick this up this weekend.
Multi player
Massive
Space sim
Sounds like a blast!
I cant wait to roleplay a trader or fighter pilot! or even a disgruntled pacifist trying to survive in a hostile galaxy.
I also just love the fact i can issue commands to the ship using my voice that just takes the cake, and when it talks back to you wow so cool.
Voice Attack is definitely worth the 8$ it costs!

A few? Who is the one lieing? All of these players are asking for refunds, and for every 1 your seeing there are probably ten more that aren't bothering to post and just getting refunds. Looking at a dozen pages here is a list. And there are 100 more pages I could have looked at:

All requesting refunds. I am too lazy to list anymore but there are different players asking for refunds on every single page.
Brenics ~ Just to point out I do believe Chris Roberts is going down as the man who cheated backers and took down crowdfunding for gaming.

The term is Massively Multiplayer Online not Massive Multiplayer Online.
I believe the Massively part refers to the number of people that can simulanteously play the game, not how many people there are in a given area of the game. The Multiplayer bit is obvious as is the Online requirement.
It do. This is an online games but it's not an MMO. Good game tho.
One of these days we will see discussions on these forums on wether a game is fun or not and not focused on if it meets some random forum users definition of an MMO.
....lol nah. Who am I kidding?

Quoting out of context is slimy so I've fixed the above. Elite fits the definition above and is a persistant world, if that's not close enough then I don't know what is.
When everything is an MMO, MMO as a term means very little. Eventually we won't even use those 3 letters anymore.
Kool that this game is out, though.
