Guild Wars...a little over-hyped?

I have been playing Guild Wars for little over a month now and  I have to say I am highly disappionted in the game.  I mean dont get me wrong guild wars is a ok game, and all you who are on Guild Wars balls dont come in here and flame me for my opinion, but its just not that GREAT of a game like everyone says.  I mean you go out and look at the ratings and it is still at a 8.7, thats crazy!  I mean it might be better then WoW (which I believe is over rated too), but it is def not a 8.7.  Now granted I am not max level yet and I know everyone says that a lot of the stuff you can do is when you get max level, but I believe I am far along enough to make a accruate review of this game.  First off my beef with the game is when you first start off, I think they allow you to get your secondary job WAY to soon.  I mean take for example FFXI, they dont allow you to get your secondary till 20 I believe.  IMO I like that better.  Another beef I have with the game is there is no AH.  I know this seems like a minor thing, but it is big deal to me.  And now the graphics are smooth, nice, what not, but they gameplay is not smooth and the world is not seemless IMO.  And the community just plain sucks!  I mean it is almost liek you are playing by yourself.

Now dont get me wrong the game is a good buy, but just dont be fooled this isnt going to keep you occupied for very long.  One very nice hting I like about the game is the Henchmen.  Although this promots you not to talk and group with other people, not many people group anyways so they help you out a lot when you cant find anyone.  But yea if you got a extra 40-50 bucks laying around and you got nothing better to but I would say go buy it, but its not the best game and all that people play it up to be.

    That is very true

I played all the way thru the story mode, really don't want to do it again, tried PvP, that got old really quick,  turn out Guild Wars is nothing liked I had hoped for

Don't you worry little buddy. You're dealing with a man of honor. However, honor requires a higher percentage of profit

Amazing. I am amazed by how much our opinions are apart. Heck, i registered just to post this. I love that game, have been playing for months now. I made a ton of friends, i never use henchmen, and i'm in a huge guild with helpfull and fun people ( who even speak my main language, wich is Dutch ).

Just today i went to the international district, and i met a Korean guy ( whose name i couldn't tell you because it's in Korean characters, wich, off course, i cannot read...) and we started talking. He's a level 17 and i'm 12, so he helped me do some missions. We had great fun ! We've been talking for hours on end. There was nothing to gain for him to assist me on quests he alllready did, other then maybe having a few laughs with someone from a different continent.

That sort of thing happened to me a lot in guildwars. You meet other players, do a few missions, and you make jokes and share adventures. not to mention share cool items and cry in despair when you lose a mission together ( Aaaaaaarfg !!!! NOOOOOO !!! Not Althea's Ashes failed AGAIN ! RES ME ! RES MEEEE! )

I think you guys need to explore the game further. If you've only been playing for a month, i think you've only seen something like 10 % of the game, unless your one of those poor unemployed, single, fat middle aged nerd who playes 24/7 but i'm getting off topic.

Don't judge GW just yet, give it a chance. You'll be hooked... and ( insert cheesy inspirational music ) remember the community is what you make of it. YOU are the community.

ive being gaming since 85' , been playing rpgs since 87 and mmorpgs since 1998 and i must say GW is the WORST single game i have EVER played. Now at this point i could go into the reasons why but to save time im not becuz at the end of the day ill  still hate the game with every single fiber of my being and you the reader of this thread will either agree or disagree so really what is the point of explaining why i hate it ... i just do  image

Hey, I play GW and I really like it! BUT I agree with you the game is over-hyped heck just about every game is over hyped these days. I think a large part of that is due to the fact that people are jaded and are all looking for the next great game that they can play and recapture the good old days.

The hype-meter is based on what everyone enters into it and GW has recieved a lot of positive input from a lot of people. If the 8.7 bother you then put your hype in and see.

Witty saying to amuse you goes here.

The single worst excuse for an MMO. I've had pizza that lasted longer than this game.

I think GW is overrated, but then so is WoW and many other games. I tried GW during the preview event and a few hours is all it took for me to know I'd never buy the game, the PvP was ok but didn't come close to what I've experienced in DAOC.

Im some one that has tried basically every MMO out there, i just recently tried SWG and EQII (that was a mistake) Honestly.. the genre is going down hill fast. People need to stop hyping this pieces of crap and stop putting up with the lack of effort on the dev's part. Honestly, i think anyone could make a game and hype the crap out of it deliever a Sh**y product and make tons of money. Thats all they are doing and as long as were putting up with it, they'll keep doing it. I for one, want to change the market (one of the many reasons i want to design video games.) Anywho, guild wars was a huge dissapointment. Instancing is the worst idea in an MMO ever.

I have to agree this game got boring on the first day.  To me just the fact that the whole world is an instance and you can meet people while traveling (which to me is one of the main purpose of an MMO) really sucks.  Of course it is free to play and i havent uninstalled it yet, but i highly doubt it will get much more play.

I also hated Guild Wars.  I pre-ordered GW and played every weekend beta event.  I disliked GW so much I didn't even pickup my pre-order.  I also played WoW from the start and quit it about 1 month ago.  I just got bored with WoW because there wasn't any end-game for me.  IMO WoW is way better then GW though.

i dont think it got boring the first day at all..but if you put good hours in playing, you will be bored pretty quick. i actualy had to delete a max lvl char becasue i had no more slots left, and made a 5th lvl 20 all in the first month.
i did quit now, can only do same exact pvp battles so much but it was an ok game.
still have no idea why its on this site though, but i dont want to start that up again::::40::

Looking down the forum list GW, WoW, EQ2 and CoH were the most recently really hyped games on these forums. Out of all of them EQ2 is the only one that seems not have gotten a ton of "it sucks or got boring" repetitive posts. To me it actually appears to be gaining a bit more positive responses.

i for one...agree that it's overhyped...i bought this game because of the reviews...and got very disappointed :o oh well... :x

Yep, definately, and more than just a mere little.  Many people I talk to including some clerk who works at a software store say they love this game, many because they hate MMORPGs.  I go against my better judgement and buy the game to try it out, and I can't say I was surprised to find nothing more than Diablo II with a makeover.  Disappointed, but not that surprised.  It was the first time I ever played a game and gave it just a week of play before I called it quits.  For me, that says alot.  image

got 90 hours+ out of the PvE, and enjoying the PvP. Comaprable with most console RPG's that cost more. Stop comparing it with pay monthly MMORPG's and suddenly it all makes sense ;) GW is a game to pick up and play with a couple of mates (either RL or online), not to spend 24 hours a day playing.

    ---sig---

PvE in general is pretty lame, if you think long and hard about it. You are spending your time beating a severely gimped AI that would lose to a well trained monkey. Best not to think too long and hard why you are wasting time playing games in general actually...

You can do this in any and every single MMO on the market, and it doesnt make the game good.

    Good point i guess.

What is it about guildwars you guys don't like then ? What does it not have that other games that you do like, have ? Or is it a general disliking of all computer games ? Where's the arguments ? All i hear is "it sucks !" and " it's boring"

Compared to what ? Am i playing the wrong game ? If i am, you guys better tell me wich one i SHOULD be playing. ;)

I love Guild Wars, the PvE is pretty good but the story is a bit weak (but what ORPG has a decent back story). The PvP is where the game shines. I had some issues with pick up groups in the game but if you have friends to play with, then guild wars is awesome. If not, join a good guild that uses some from of voice comm and you'll have a blast. This is also one of the few games where you can solo almost as effectively as a group in the PvE part of things. Hell a group of henchies > 90% of random pick up groups.

Oh and for a game with no monthly fee, it has excellent customer service and fast response times, it has already got rid of player run casinoes (which is the bane of every MMORPG) within the first few weeks of them popping up. Also there is already 2 free area expansions. Now compare this to a game like SWG with a premium monthly fee but has devs who treat their customers like shit. Well its obvious why GW got such great reviews and is so popular.

Just couldn't get into GW despite numerous attempts...

It's weird that I can't explain why, because pre-release this game was everything I was looking for...

How often does Guild Wars add content?  And by content, I don't mean a new mob occasionally, I mean actual content, land area, quests, etc.  Or, is Guild Wars like a stand alone game.  What you get when you buy the game is what you get?

I stand by the high rating i gave guild wars on this board but..that being said its not a game you can buy and expect to play 24/7 like some of the mmorphs of old.

Its best played with friends or a good guild, its also helpfull to really like pvp. In short its rpg lite for casual gamers and those who like small pvp battles.

The only way I can get any enjoyment out of Guild Wars is by treating it like a single player game. This is because, in my opinion, GW has the worst and most hostile community out of any game I have ever played.

Every time I walk into a common area populated by other players, I get nothing but immaturity. Now I know all games have this, but I've never played one where it was so apparent. I stopped asking questions about the game a while ago, as all of my questions were met with profanity and insults because, God forbid, I didn't know the answer already.

Honestly, I could give a crap less about the PvP in this game, because I don't really care to play with any of the people I've encountered so far in this game. I'll play it until I can't solo the content anymore, at which point it will stop being a nice single player game.

    Flame away =)

Yea I can see getting some enjoyment out of it if you treat it like a single player game, but I didn't buy it for a single player game.  And they didn't market it as a single player game, so I was expecting a lot more.  And I also agree that the game should be taken off the site, but again I am not getting into that eitherimage.  But yea I just think its what your looking for coming into the game, I mean if you already know what you want in a game or have judgments about it and the gae doesn't deliver all of them your going to disappointed.  I thinks thats what happen to me.

Biggest grip and whine post .....

Don't like it ...don't play, sounds simple.

I am sure that when or if the first GW expansion bombs the devs will get the signal

I ask again , what game has come ont in the last two years without being overhyped?

Well, there you have it. Guild Wars can be reviewed by how long have YOU been playing MMORPG's actually.

The longer you have played them, the more and faster you dislike GW.

For me, I haven't played MMORPG's for that long, so GW will probably keep me up a month or two atm, but I tend to agree that I wouldn't want to go trough the story again. It's just like playing a singleplayer game twice.

Also, the over-hype thing. Well, lots of people did buy the game and are still playing it and I'm guessing they are enjoying it too so I wouldn't suprise about the rating at mmorpg.com.
