The Borderlands series (3 games so far) is the most fun i have had in an FPS ever.  It has the progression you are after with different skill trees, multiple weapons etc.  It probably doesn't have the multi-player you are after, it is more single player and co-op.  Great games and loads of fun, and unlike most FPS it is not completed in under 4 hours. Borderland 1 and 2 will easily clock in at around 40+ hours of play time.

Firefall has been fun, with the latest updates.  Dunno If that would be your cup of tea, but its free to play.

Yea know, I played Borderlands back when it released. No idea what happened to the install. Its not on my Steam list. Hrm. I recall that it was actually a fun game.

The three games are Borderlands 1, 2, and the pre-sequel? I think I might go that route.

I probably wouldn't reccoment a COD pc game simply because they spread matchmaking really thin and it becomes hard to find matches a lot of the time depending on where you are located. I just got BF4 for the pc and am really enjoying it.

If you can get BF4 to run without chrashing its a good game. But you never know before you start it up, because its a bugged piece of shit they cant seem to fix.

    Halo 5?

Wouldn't play anything EA FPS as they all feel the same and over charge.

This isn't a signature, you just think it is.

    Verdun

Requires a specific taste as the setting of the game is WW1 trench warfare but oh boy this is a fun game! :)

Edit: Not that popular but if you want to experience something a bit different give it a try.

Something with progression is always nice.

    Suggestions?

If you want progression AND popular AND multiplayer, EA is your company. You're looking at the battlefield / Call of Duty series.

If you want good / less popular FPS games, check out Evolve or Natural Selection 2.

If you're looking for more single-player FPS games, check out any of the Bioshock games, Dishonored, Deus Ex.

If you want a shooter that's more similar to an MMO, check out Destiny, Planetside 2, or All Points Bulletine. All 3 have progression.

What is most popular? Honestly the big one atm is CS:GO (counter-strike: global offensive). Battlefield, Call of Duty, and Team Fortress 2 are also really popular.

    - Honestly, there's a lot of options when it comes to FPS. All depends on what you're expectations are, and how picky you are about your games.

I find it kinda odd noone has mentioned Half Life, Half Life 2 or Left 4 Dead, they are to this day pretty much the industry standard as far as pure FPS goes and really noone can top the series after all these years.

    All 3 amazing games.

    Industry standards, no. Classics, yes.

Few people still play the original HL anymore. Same goes w/ HL2 (outside of certain mods). L4D2 still gets played, but I wouldn't still call it popular. They are all great games, just a bit old.

Battlefield 4 and Hardline are great games. Battlefield 3 is still lively. CoD: AW is for 10 year olds. Just saying.

Red Orchestra 2 is in my opinion the multiplayer shooter you can play right now. It may be hard the first few times, but once you get the hang of it, it is an experiance.

Battlefield 4 is the best shooter at the moment. Don't listen to haters. It works great and is discounted right now. There are a lot of players around

I'm not playing anymore, but I've played more than 200 hours and I don't even like shooters.
