I left when I got to level 50 i.e. veteran rank. That was so high and solid wall that I quit. I still think that VR is a total fail as a concept but then I read that they are about to remove it. Resubbed a few months ago, rolled a new sorcerer in another faction (playing the other one as a clothing/woodworker) and I really like what ESO has become. Now I'm VR3 as a complete slacker and things to do in real life but I don't mind even VR stuff. I've played better MMOs (EQ, EQ2 and even Lotro until Mirkwood) but ESO as it stands has a real potential to become a good ES game and MMO imho.

I'm not trying to convince someone, this is just my experience with the game. One more thing - P2P is a seller for me and the moment ESO becomes F2P I think I'm gone. Hope it never happens because there's enough to do and explore in this game. And all those claiming that it isn't an MMO - go and solo group and open world dungeons or Craglorn.

    First Impression....

I flamed the hell out of this game at launch - I played beta - I thought it sucked bad - it did the elder scrolls no justice.

    Today.....

It's really come a long way since launch and my resentment has settled off. I picked up the Imperial Edition on Steam the other day. I can't seem to stop playing it now. Combat feels different, ai is still lacking, but the custom builds are pretty neat and as you play and become one with your character it just starts growing on you. As you play, you really start to know and understand your own unique build and playstyle - mix in some 3 faction pvp and the story/immersion single player part and it's really turning out to be a decent game. It is starting to feel repetitive - that is just par for the course with respect to mmorpg's though.

    Tomorrow ....

    Consider patch 6 coming

    Long Term Commitment....

This game has done a lot of growing and is still growing - bottom line, it's actually turning out to be pretty good. While things are going well and look to be getting better, I don't see any long term commitment for me with respect to ESO. At this point my tastes in games require alot more freedom, don't get me wrong ESO does have some freedom, but it is limited, I am looking for something else, something that allows me to be unorthodox is much as possible without the classic "mmorpg grind" - so long term commitment isn't any fault of ESO, it's just my tastes.

Oh right now it makes sense.

Anyhow I will probably wait until 1st or second of January; that is when the deal ends on Steam and I am hoping by then I would have more information about the 1.6, more visual presentation, you know gameplay sort of thing.

You people keep mentioning VR; can you give me a basic explanation of what is that and what you do there? Also I see lately on the official forum quite allot of discussion about CP 30 and how "people that have worked to get those xp gains, will get nothing in the end" sort of posts. Anyone can elaborate?

If you do decide to get the game, go to Green Man Gaming. With the discount code, its just over $15 at the moment.

"VR" is Vetran Rank play and it's the post-50 game play which, at first, consisted of just going to a higher version area of the two alliances you didn't see 1-50. It was just more quest grinding with a higher degree of difficulty. Later on they added true end-gmae content with a couple of new zones, trials (think raids), etc.

That whole system (but not the content) is going away and is being replaced by the Champion Point (CP) system beginning with 1.6 and continuing through 1.7 and 1.8 where the VR ranks will be removed.

The "CP 30" controversy has to do with the way they're introducing the Champion System (which lets you add more passive abilties and therefore strength.) People assumed that when the system was introduced they'd get full credit for all the post-50 gameplay they had done - the more you did, the more CPs you'd get.

But since they're phasing it in and the VR ranks will still be around for a few more months, they are only giving everyone who has at least 1 VR1 charcter in their account (CPs can be used by any and all charaters in your account - e.g. if you have 30 to spend, every character in your account can spend their 30 any way they wish) 30 CPs when 1.6 launches.

This has created a lot of drama because they haven't said yet what they will do about CPs later on when the VR ranks actually do go away. People with one or several VR14s (max rank at the moment) assumed they would be getting many more CPs than everyone else. They still very well might eventually, but not until the VR system is totally removed.

If they had distributed the CPs proportional to VR ranks at the beginning, this would have just resulted in the current VR14s becoming even that much more powerful compared to their VR1 opponents they PVP with. Since they're not and this is a PVP game after all, much drama has ensued.

I have soloed many VR level public dungeons on my sorcerer and fire staff with a combo of Elemental Ring and Volcanic Rune, using Inner Light and Critical Surge to self heal and immovable to mitigate damage and CC.

I've also done many bosses solo using the good old fire staff Destructive Clench to keep knocking them back, but only those who are not immune to the knockback + stun, of course... so yeah, many things thought of as group content can be soloed for a challenge... and there are many much better than me at it :)

Early on before release people were upset that they had to roll an alt to paly the enemy faction areas. ZOS's solution was to open those zones up (still only see your alliance) at level 50. The decided to allow level 50 players to continue to gain XP and thus gave birth to vet ranks.

Vet XP gain was much slower than regular XP which lead to people complain about the grind to get to v14. Some what justified complaints imo. The champion system when fully implemented elimates vet XP and ranks and puts AA in it's place.

A few months ago when ZOs rolled out the details of the Champion system it was said that XP is being tracked and that you will get champion points based on that XP gained account wide while waiting for it's implementation up to a certain point. Earlier this month they said CP would be capped at 30 no matter how many alts you leveled. Thus the upset threads.

My personal opinion on this is that ZOS thought the Champ System would be out sooner when they originally said what they said. This lead some people to believe they would be able to have enough CP to nearly complete the system by the time it launched. Again personally the cap makes sense since this is supposed to be a AA system. I for one do not mind and look forward to gaining points through pvp once the system is implemented.

Ofc things are doable. In EQ my buddy necro soloed mobs that would have wiped me as a SK but then again I shined as a tank with the ability to pull mobs with feign death and then tanking them. Was better than pure warrior tank in a usual exp camping group.

ESO is a fine game but solo friendly as most MMOs these days. Time has moved on and so the concept of MMOs. I must admit though that I'd vote for a bit more group content, communities and guilds tend to be better in group heavy MMOs imo. I don't blame WoW or any other MMO, we just have what we have.

Oh I'm with you: I prefer group content also. Especially when you're with a good group that complements each other well and know when and how to use synergies... it can be a thing of beauty and much more fun than solo.

But like you say, it is what it is in 2014 and many people choose to solo because they can use and control their play time more effectively or have been burnt enough times in toxic groups with asshats that they now shy away from it.

I actually group a whole bunch in ESO - especially in PVP coordinating and working to fake-out the other side...much fun.

First off, I am not a fan of TES:O. That being said, take what follows with that in mind :)

It sounds like you are OK with the general design of TES:O. If so, then "bug and balance work" will make you happy.

However, if the basic game design is giving you pause (like my case), then nothing short of a total rewrite would work for you (or me).

    - Al

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.

    He's also a vampire.

He's using a combination of bow, dual wield and vampire abilities... the ultimate he's using is Devouring Swarm from the vampire skill line that leeches health.
