Hey, Im pretty new to the EQII community. I was wondering what type of PvP is it going to be? I see in games that do not have PvP many players are always worried about griefer types coming in. If they plan on launching "free for all" PvP I can see where this would be a concern.
PvP is a very important part of gameplay though. DAoC is a pretty good example of how planned concentual PvP can go. I hate to say it but WoW and Guild Wars are good examples also. WoW is the type of game designed for a more general "gaming" crowd and GW is basicly a FPS style game with 3rd person. The communities are generally a "poorer" quality because of thier broader and more basic gameplay. Griefing in PvP is pretty much a thing of the past. Its all concentual. If you dont want to do it, dont flag yourself. (bar being on a PvP server, in which case you only have youself to blame, I never understood why anyone would complain about griefing when they choose be be on a PvP server)
That shouldn't reflect badly on the mechanic of PvP. Used correctly, PvP can be one of the most exciting aspects of gameplay. Its one thing to fight off scripted mobs, its another to defeat a group enemy players. It can be very rewarding. Asherons call is probably my best example of how NOT to do PvP. No purpose but to annoy one another was really all it was about.
EQII looks like it could have a great PvP environment if they go that direction. You already have a "good kingdom" and a "bad kingdom". What is the point if there is not going to be conflict between them? Just imagine the role-playing/questing opportunities that could be opened up!
Duelling isnt really PvP so if thats all they are doing, dont even worry about it. Duelling is just...well....duelling. I guess it could be fun if you like chest thumping. All that sort of PvP shows is you have prepared for the single challenge of defeating another player in a controlled situation. Usually in the open facing off. The challenger is usually looking to show off his ability to click in a preset sequence of attacks faster then the other guy. Weee... Real skill in PvP is in tactics of the group. Taking of a keep in DAoC can not be accomplished by a rag tag unorganized mob of poop talkers. Even a small group of moderately organized defenders will have an easy time holding them off.
Concentual - balanced PvP can be a great feature to EQII IF done correctly.
Im a casual PvP person. I never played on a PvP server. Nor would I ever. However, I gotta say that some of the best game experience Ive had is in "battlegrounds" and "raids" of other games PvP systems.
Big shock to everone but not evryone likes PVP and SOE know this. They will lose many mant people if they institute any type of open pvp. In my experience open pvp does nothing but attract griefers and gankers. If i wanted to deal with those types Id be playing WoW still. So, SOE better realize that the more mature PVE crowd they have now dont want PVP to interrupt the gmae play we know and enjoy. If they want to make a special rules server with open pvp then thats fine
whats the problem? Wouldn't they just put open pvp on a seperate server if they were going to do it? As for dueling, that doesn't even count as pvp.

I was suggesting this before that they should have seperate pvp servers just like they do in WoW and in the first EQ. In the first EQ they had 4 pvp servers each with they're own different set of rules. One had no rules I think. As for the dueling option, well I always click cancel on it cause the person whos usually challenging me to a duel is at least 10 levels over me or more. I will duel my friends and guildies if we'er bored or having duel events, those are fun with guildies. I remember back in EQ1 we would all rush into the arena and just start beating on eachother. I'm not much into pvp myself but I'll do it when I'm bored of Questing, grinding xp and tradeskilling.
Kinda hoping they have PvP zones, or maybe a flag/TEF system. That way people who WANT to pvp can, but we don't get the ganking "ROFFLE U CAREBEAR N00B!!!" type.
It was announced that the PvP system will be arena based. You also must accept the duel before fighting. Basically, SOE learned from their mistakes. I bet there will be a PvP server, though.

I just hope it doesn't drag back the Pvp asshats that may be detrimental to the community.
This game is getting more like WOW every day.
Pretty soon you will not be able to tell the difference.
And Yes I play both WOW and EQII.
Support Bacteria, its the only culture some people have.

I will say, it has gotten alot like WoW, but PVP is a good thing for any game. I think they were planning it from the start anyways.
