Hello, I have the game but I have some questions before I start playing. Well, I'm going to play as a Black Mage, but I want to know if it's good to mix that job with let's say WHM? Or can I play just with one job all the way?
So what do I lose if I mix jobs, and what do I lost if I don't. Also, if I play Black Mage all the way, do I have to choose black mage as a second job? BDM/BDM

Im also waiting for my copy of FFXI but I'll try to answer your questions since Ive read up quite a bit. First of all, you cant sub your main job, so there is no BLM/BLM. There is a quest to unlock the ability to have a sub job, and I think you can do the quest at lvl 18 (correct me if Im wrong).
And WHM seems like a good sub to BLM...Id say WHM or RDM but I havent played the game yet so I might be wrong.
BLM/WHM is the most common combination for a Black Mage. It gives you the ability to backup heal in dire times, and keeps your MP up there. Also, in addition to gaining spells for curative purposes, you'll also eventually get spells such as Dia(reduces defense), Slow, Paralyze, Raise, Erase (gets rid of a bad status on an ally), Banish (holy magic damage) and other things that black mages can find effective.
Subbing Red Mage with a Black mage is really only effective in upper levels because of 3 spells- Dispel, Phalanx, and Stoneskin. THese spells are only available is subbing RDM at levels 64,66,and 68 respectively. Dispel gets rid of an enemy's positive status, Phalanx greatly reduces damage taken by you, and Stoneskin temporarily makes you immune to damage. Since Black mages have some of the strongest attacks in the game but also the weakest armor, you are always at risk of generating too much emnity, or hate. Most enemies you will kill in experience parties can kill you in 2-3 hits, so the Stoneskin/Phalanx is great for that.
Subbing Summoner is also acceptable, since this will give you even more MP to cast spells, and at high levels, and auto refresh ability that gradually refills your MP over time. But at the beginning, BLM/WHM is the best, and is acceptable throughout your gaming experience.

No, in fact you really can't play one job the whole way. At level 18, you'll complete a quest that allows you have a second job simultaneously as your "subjob". Your subjob *must* be a different job. And you're going to have to play with it as your main job in order to level it up, since an unlevelled ("gimped") subjob is almost useless. WHM makes an excellent subjob for BLM. If you don't have a subjob, or an unlevelled subjob, your stats will be lower, and you won't have access to a subjob's spells or abilities, and you'll find you get few invites to parties, since most parties don't want members who can't pull their weight.
