OK, techies. I need some help and some folks here are quite helpful and knowledgeable
It has been a long while since I have messed about with "Permissions" in windows products (Win 98, about).
I am coming across permission denials more and more frequently with Win 7, signed on as Admin, Owner, and other supposed FULL ACCESS accounts. Why is this happening and how can I get rid of it?
My current headache:
Madden NFL 2008 for PC. Trying to find some kind of .ini file because the game is giving me fits. Cannot access the Madden NFL 2008 folder under .../users/AlBQuirky.
I can understand locking access to actual windows SYSTEM files, but this other perifory folder crap is getting old. Fast. Why even bother doing this?

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.

That game specific directory should be under UserNameAppDataLocal or LocalLow
MAKE A RESTORE POINT.
Who is the Owner of the directory?
Right click directory > Properties > Securities tab > Advanced > Owner tab.
Is it TrustedInstaller? You might have to change that to you.
Messing with TrustedInstaller ownership has a potential for screwing it all up. Be sure to revert to TrustedInstaller if it was the owner after you tried what you want.
Not sure if you checked it, but check the shortcut/launcher and make sure it isnt trying to run as admin, right click it.
Also, disable UAC. Good luck.

It is one thing if you can't delete or change files in the folder, W7 can be annoying there, getting rid of protected folders is more work then one would think...
...but that you can't even look on them? That sounds seriously messed up.
First of all, check if the main folder is write protected or not, and that you have acess to it (right click on the folder anc choose properties). You should have full access and the write protect box should not be crossed in.
Here is how you get ridd of write protect if crossing out the box doesn't hurt (which I spent 5 hours on a month ago myself):
Start > Run "cmd"
type--> diskpart
type--> list volume
type--> select volume #
type--> attributes disk clear readonly
If this doesn't work I would seriously clean the computer from viruses and malware (I recommend YAC, it is free).
try first being on administrator user and then b right clickong on .exe and > run as admin
Disabling UAC won't actually fix anything. UAC is just the pop-up that comes up asking for Admin permission.
Sure, if you disable it, you never get that popup. But that popup does more to prevent malware/viruses than antimalware/antivirus software does. And that popup isn't what screws up file permissions - that's bad installers - and since Madden 2008 was out before Windows 7, I can understand why it's not compliant with Windows 7 security (well that, and it's EA). That's why Microsoft has the Compatibility modes (right click->Properties->Compatibility->Run As pretty much any version of Windows back to 95).
Yeah, it can be frustrating. So is getting infected with malware though.

when is the last time you simply did a reinstall of the OS?
trying to fix stuff aint verry effective when it comes to windows, once it broke you can glue it but the breakline will be bugging you.

As long as you don't get some malware on your computer which causes havoc with the OS, you shouldn't have to reinstall Windows. People who claim that a reinstall is necessary were likely messing around with things they didn't understand, or ended up getting malware which modified some things in a nasty way. I have had Windows 7 running on my current PC since the day I assembled it and I've had no issues with it.
If you're only having problems with one game, it sounds like that game was programmed poorly (not surprising coming from EA) and you should refer to that game's web site or forums for help.
