I've played Uncharted Waters Online and it was fun for a while. Then, after sailing around the world avoiding other pirates (players mostly = the dangerous ones), I settled down into the grind. And grind grind grind it goes from there.
It was fun for the first month or so, building up a ship and taking it around the world. Nice environment, fun places, and in towns people are generally pretty nice (and occasionally helpful). The bartering and what not makes leveling easier if you buy the right stuff to sell, which makes the crafting go fast enough (to upgrade your ship and its cannons, I found this easier than say "buying" them from other players).
Overall, it was fun enough, like I said. Dungeon crawling to improve the character got to be a grind, since the dungeons aren't that involved. But some folks might be able to tolerate this for the nice ocean voyages.
Originally posted by Kilrain I'm sorry, but Archeage has more sandbox content than Darkfall. This is the main reason I don't play DF anymore. Just not enough sand/tools
Huh? Darkfall head and shoulders more a sandbox than ArchAge which really is just a themepark with a few sandbox mechanisms.
Have to agree with this. AA tries to hide certain aspects of the game but anyone who has played more than a couple MMOs will see that AA is 10 pounds of crap shoved in a 9 pound box. That doesnt mean AA doesnt have its good points, it does have several, most are weak.
Is anyone still playing PoTBS? I played for a few years, it was a blast. Being a real sailor, I loved that PoTBS had many realistic sailing features in it. Ever since SOE dropped it, does anyone still play?
Uncharted Waters and Voyage Centry are both almost 10-year-old games. I surely love them, but still, their graphics and game mechanisms are a bit out-dated.
What makes me even more sad is that, when we talk about best sailing games in "2015", 2 out of 5 are from 10 years ago. Are we really out of sailing games?!?!
I just started playing Archeage and got my first ship 2 days ago. The only problem I have in this game is that this game is totally only designed for hardcore players. The level of entertainment value decreases a lot if you only plays casually.
This list seems like an excuse to list Archeage first at something.
I wonder what will be next... maybe the "top 5 mmo that starts with A and ends with E". Whatever.
As someone else said who replied, I was thinking exactly the same thing. It was literally the first thing I was thinking when I saw the title. And sure enough as I scrolled on down there is ArcheAge at number one.
ArcheAge has gotten so much bad publicity, and for very good reason in my opinion, that I wonder if Trion / XL Games didn't have this site make up some crazy list just to try to get them a bit of good publicity and help their extremely tarnished image at this point. I usually enjoy reading the articles on this site but I truly feel this one was written with underlying reasons.
"Taking that and also factoring in the fact that the rest of the game is incredibly polished and fun to play, and you can realize that ArcheAge is a more well-rounded and complete experience."
I am not sure what game hes talking about..... The game I played was far far far far far from polished. With the devs busting the economy with a cash shop item, because they have no idea whats going on, too bots running all over x100, from falling through the world into the ocean under the world, and i could go on and on.
I dont think the person who wrote this played AA very long, maybe like 2 days, if well polished comes into the review. As far as sailing goes in the game ha, you got people launching boats, and pulling them crossed the land with a harpoon gun. This must be some of that great polish he was talking about.
Ultima Online def does boats way better than Arche Age. Must be UO didnt fork up enough cash to be put on the list lol.
Wow AA really ?? the sailing was enjoyable but all the other crap sunk it , sure smells like a AA payoff here to try scrape up some good PR. by some of the comments there seems to be a few botting fan boys in on the action to drum up spin for the pretty looking steaming pile of dung AA turned into.
The actual sailing and naval combat mechanics of Voyage Century Online are probably the best out of any game on that list. Much better than PotBS or UWO by a long shot. It's just too bad the game becomes a total grindfest once your skills get to about level thirty or so and the game has one of the worst P2W cash shops of any game in history.
As ReesRacer said Naval Action is the one to watch.
Still in Beta but it showing great promise, Open World MMO test will start soon. Currently the "Sea Trials" are your Ship vs Ship in PvE or PvP. Certainly worth a look and if the devs say what their Open World will be like it will put PoTBS to shame.
This is very interesting to say theLeast But I really dont understand why MMORPG isnt covering this or did I miss the cover? But when you get to their Home page pay a visit to their Facebook page. Enjoy!

Naval Action this is worth looking in to I see some familiar people from POTBS in it, and some from other Sailing Games such as Sea Dogs and POTC.
Thanks for the reference.

Currently: Games Audio Engineer, you didn't hear what I heard, you heard what I wanted you to hear.
UWO is definitely a gem for those players that like this type of mmo.
If you want to get an idea for what ship combat is "kinda" like in DFO all you need to do is watch the video below.
