This was to be expected, considering the fact only about now majority of pc gamers are starting to have decent enough hardware to run witcher 2 on full settings.

Agreed.  Imagine there aren't too many gamers with spec's lower than the minimun, and a heap willing to upgrade to play The Witcher 3

You did some kind of survey to come to this conclusion?

I guess 580 GTX does not make the grade. Well too bad I guess .

There are folks indeed who will upgrade (me too, even though I'm somewhere between the two specs right now), but if there's a turn in the trends, W3 could be left out on no-mans's land... like those games back in the days which were developed with the expectations of continuous speed increase by the time they will be released, and during that the industry changed the course and not chased the GHz's further, instead they switched onto the multi-core route of today.

Dunno of course for sure, that the previous year will be just a "hiccup" or the start of a new trend, but the year was all about consumption and not the chase of the faster and more powerful... just check Samsung's Ativ 9 2015ed on CES, I think that's the direction the industry will focus on, during the next 1-2 years. Maintain the speed, while massively lowering the TDP.

And it could put games in a difficult position, games which were developed with an aim at the current top level, "since there will be even better gear a year later anyways..."

Everybody's complaining about the video card requirement but how about 64 bit OS?  I ran into this issue with DAI, and upgraded to windows 8.1 64 bit because I was running a 32 bit OS.  So now I have it, but 8.1 sucks and now I'm stuck with it until 10 comes out I guess. Not to mention the price tag and hassle of having to reinstall windows and all your programs and games.  I never noticed when I preordered DAI that it required a 64 bit OS, so I had to scramble to get one right at the last minute.  Fun. Just wanted to mention it, in case people didn't notice.

Anything that requires over 4GB of RAM requires a 64-bit system as a 32-bit system can only handle 4GB (a 32-bit integer is 4.2 billion give or take a bit). I don't exactly know DA:I's specs but this is a good rule to follow. See 6GB+? Automatic 64-bit.

Don't be surprised that this trend continues. Now that people are starting to push these boundaries with specs like these it's only a matter of time before another Crysis comes along to set the bar for future games to look. Witcher 3 might be that benchmark. It isn't going to get lighter. It's only up from here

    I'm good to go!!! :)

    Hi

Well my 2 year old Falcon NW Talon computer still exceeds the recommended settings so no upgrading yet for me.

    I7 3.6 Ghz, 32 Gigs of ram, Nvidia 690, Windows 10, 64 bit.

I'll be done with Dragon Age Inquisition by then and ready to go.

Yeah baby, got a box fer Christmas hits those specs easy.

Unless there is a serious advantage to using more than 4 cores, I highly doubt there will be a performance hit to those with a decent i5, or equivalent.

Minimum vid card is pretty ridiculous, though.

The ai and engine for calculating things do not use the GPU(s). From what I gather, those are pretty extreme in this game. They have both the CPU and the GPU requirements high though I'd argue the CPU reqs. are higher in comparison. The fact that they even named a specific minimum model and have a speed over 3Ghz on both min and rec. says a lot. Also, they DO have an i5 listed - the minimum and notice it is one of the best i5's made in the past few years and an unlocked one at that (partly imho, partly reality). Most games I've seen released in the past few years do not name specific generation models to meet or exceed, they just name i5 or i7 or dual core, or quad core (DA:I) and a Ghz.

The point being, an I7 is pretty much an I5 with added hyperthreading, yes there are minor buffer differences.  There are lots of game benchmarks out there showing very little difference between either cpu when hyperthreading is not used, hence why I made that point.  This point is rather obvious if you read any game benchmarks comparing the two.   The exact reason I got the top I5 rather than an I7 as the $100 difference does not get you much.

Whew, got lucky on choices for my new system build (first in just over 7 years). I crossed my fingers and skipped on the newest Intel generation (not really the best CPUs for gaming really anyway with what is out now - especially bang for buck versus going back to the last Haswell generation). I needed a new system anyway, but 80% of the reason I built it versus procrastinating another year or two was Witcher 3 (I knew it would hammer systems) and DA: Inquisition (well, other games too, but those two especially).

Pricing was great on a lot of parts leading up to (and over somewhat) Black Friday this year, especially the Samsung 1Tb EVO SSD. Some prices were the lowest they have ever been. After about 8 different comparison builds for pricing on a spreadsheet I realized that it was better to try and future proof more and toss out the idea of expanding / upgrading later (except maybe, just maybe the video cards in a few years, maybe).

Get a good case with good air flow and the ability to really run your cables clean. After the hemming and hawing, I went Corsair 750d - all case fans replaced with AF140s adding another AF140 to top next to the 280mm cooler and two AF120s to the bottom.
    Asus Maximus VII Formula Mobo
Intel i7-4790k (without much effort have it running right now @ 4.6Ghz all cores, 4.2Ghz uncore and @ 2.2volts). I might see if I can finesse more later but no need right now and runs cooler than pushing to far.
Corsair Hydro H110 CPU cooler (swapped the retail 2 fans with 3, could not do 4, Noctua SSO redux grey so it is 100% push with only 50% pull). Contrary to most over clockers postings and lots of testing I think push-pulling in cool air into the case runs cooler than push-pulling air out from the case and over the radiator. Of course I have a 140mm exhausting out the top right next to the radiator and right above the MOSFET with the rear 140 exhausting also right next to the MOSFET. Only two fans exhausting. Everything else bringing air in so should be pretty high pressure inside to keep dust low and push air out the various vent holes.
2x SSDs for most stuff with 2 WDD Black 2Tb for general storage and older games. Win 7 on one SSD; Win 8 on the other.
32Gb RAM (Corsair Dominator Platinum - not worth the savings to just get 16Gb RAM only to be tempted to upgrade later, and I also do lots of video encoding and graphics).
2 EVGA GTX970 FTW (in SLi) - like the RAM, just not worth being tempted later to add a second card only to not be able to not get it or have it cost more if it was out of production.
    EVGA SuperNova 1000 P2 80+Plat. PSU

Anyway, dang, I rambled, sorry, but the comment about the fan noise triggered my brain as this case actually runs very, very quiet which is saying a lot when you consider the sheer number of fans in it plus the two video cards. While certainly audible if I hammer the system and push the CPU to 100% usage and / or run a hardcore 3dMark benchmark, it is not horrendous considering what is being calculated. ;)

Well since we're counting inches I have an i7 2600K, GTX970, an LG UHD 27" monitor, a 256GB Samsung 840, two 1TB drives for media and 16GB of ram.  This is more than enough for the next 2 years easily and Witcher 3 on my PC will look just as good as yours for 1/3 the cost.

Translation, you have a chip on your shoulder and need to justify your cheap shit to someone who is excited about a new setup.

I know i will play this game with mods on PC when i can afford an upgrade that runs it on ultra settings at 60fps. But until then i will be playing it on PS4.

no it will not look as good, but your comment about console kiddies make me laugh considering how "kiddie" your attitude is.

I have seen screenshots and gameplay from the PS4 version and it looks pretty good to me. Unless TW3 offers better modding capability than the previous 2 installments ( I own 1 and 2 for PC ) I will be getting it for my PS4.

And the release date of February in your OP is wrong. It was changed a while back to May, May 19th to be exact. Though I wish was still February, as I look forward to the game. But the extra polish will be nice.
