Long time MMO player here, played alot of em and have a specific taste, upgrades.
An example is Zero Online, just shut down but that was my goto game. Reason being is there is always something to upgrade! You controled 3 Mechs, all with there own gear, sockets, gems, cores(special gear) Levels, skills.
This game kept me hooked for so long because max level, was sooooo hard to obtain, as well as max level gear. Outside of gear it also had tons of skills to upgrade, passives, actives, triggered. An example would be -3 pct damage, you could level it by -3 each time to a max of 15. Or damage increase. Then theres pets! Mounts! all that can be upgraded, kills, sockets, gems!!!
Bottom line was there was a handful of people who ever got maxed out, not because of lack of player base, there was people who played for multiple years and sstill didnt obtain max strength. This is what I want, A game where there is always something to work on.
Another example is Runescape. Truly an amazing idea of a game, just poor "gaming". The skill tree, upgrading were amazing! Just crap graphics, movement and pvp. But when you logged on, theres always something to upgrade! Yes you could hit max level everything, but it took alot of time, and grueling effort : )
Wartune. Hate it, but love it. Again, so much to upgrade! But, the combat was bland, and everything had set time frames (battlegrounds only at certain times of the day, world boss fights) I can overlook combat sometimes, but to be set to a schedule to reap the benifits of a game.....dont think so.
Any suggestions? I dont want a WoW like suggestion. WoW, you got a piece of gear, that was it maybe get to put 1 enchant on it? maybe 1 gem? . Old school wow that had 3 trees and you could mix and match, yes. Super cool, new age, not so much.
I basically want a game that has upgrades at every turn, everything could be upgraded! Pets, mounts, gears, skills, talents, housing? crafting? I want a game where there is always something to strive for.

Neverwinter online seems like a good fit for what you're asking. Mounts and companions have to be upgraded, as does your gear and the enchantments and runes in it. Plenty to keep you grinding. (Provided you don't take the easy way out and buy your way there)
Artifact gear also requires constant upgrading.

Downloading it now, gonna browse there site. Thank you. The forums seem alittle harsh towards it. I dont mind p2w, spending some money is never an issue for entertainment. Id never goto the extent of hundreds a month tho, people be crazy.
But, if you say its upgrade heavy, screw the nay sayers. Most peeps on video game forums are toxic to the game, because the people who enjoy it are to busy playing it to back it up!

If you are looking for a game where it is haaaaaaaaaaaaaaard to reach max level, try out Ashen Empires. Been playing for about 1 1/2 years so far and am only lvl 101, max level is 110. Leveling is decently easy until past 100, and for level 110 you need like 1 bil exp. But the gear, and everything is worth the grind. Takes a looong time. Skills are hard aswell. There is a PvP server (Heroes) and PvE server, (Legends). On the PvP server, there is a PvP skill, and the game has been out for 10+ years, and people who have been playing all throughout, only have level 31-34 PvP skill. Ridiculous!!
I'm enjoying my time! Graphics are eh as it is an older game. But you can do simply everything, farm resources for a house. Level up your carpentry to make advanced arrows, and for big bosses, you have to collect items, like the Dragon boss. Collect 20 scales, and 1 pristine scale to summon him. Takes ages and ages to get the scales, and it is crazy hard to get the pristine scale.
Another Bonus would be how massive the world is, and how wherever you go, you'll find new monsters, caves, dungeons, cities, and quests to take!
Highly recommend if you are looking for a game to really sink your teeth into!
So been playing neverwinter, lvl 21 Guadian fighter, and gotta admit it is fairly fun. Lots of people to group with and the combat is kinda exciting, for now ; )
Very surprised at the ease of getting dungeon groups, and love the instanced portions as well. The talent treee is diffrent, as it gives you a decent variety of skills to choose from since you can only have several active at a time (choosing 2 out of 10 typed deal of 1 kind, 2 of another 6, and so on)
Definatly going to keep this on my computer. But it doesnt feel, like the one. Great suggestion, awesome game, but it feels like somethings missing, cant put my finger on it. But going to continue to play, its free so no harm there lol. Love doesnt happen overnight right lol.
Warframe....seems interesting. Reading up on that, but seems alittle outta my comfort zone, but I am looking into it, ty.
World of tanks, I saw that on my xbox, and it does seem really popular, I never put the effort to look into it till now. Gonna check that out right now.
As for ashen empires, i love the fact you said the leveling is a horrible grind : ) but I am judging that book by its cover, the graphics/gameplay, are a little under my taste radar. However, im going to download it and try anyway just because its the only way I know for sure.
Keep the suggestions coming, but as of right now, Neverwinter holding a pretty good candle! Just have a missing feeling....
I'm glad you managed to get some enjoyment from it! I only play it on and off myself, so I get what you mean there. And it does have some pretty fun customization indeed.
I think you'll be getting your first artifact soon, if you haven't gotten it yet. (Can't remember the exact level, but I think it's between 20-30)
You can always check out Aion as well, since it's also one of those games that requires a lot of upgrading, and acquiring gear with a lot of sockets (a bit like D2 in that regard).
