Tigerdirect Problems

Electro057Electro057 Member UncommonPosts: 683

So about two months ago I went ahead and shovelled a fair bit of cash out of my savings account for a new PC, the old rig was aging a bit as it had a second generation Phantom II and an old Radeon 6990. Plus I wanted to upgrade my RAM and with all the peripherals and drives I was running it didn't feel like 700W was cutting it anymore, not to mention 8 case fans.

So I went out and forked the money over for all this:

NZXT Phantom 410 Case

Intel Core i5-4690 Processor - Quad Core, 6MB Smart Cache, 3.5GHz

Asus Sabertooth Z87 Motherboard

Asus GeForce GTX 760 Video Card - 2GB GDDR5, PCI-Express 3.0

Kingston HyperX Fury Blue 16GB

And a Corsair 1000W PSU

I forked over for the next day delivery, and it all came EXCEPT the PSU. Today I got a notice that said the "Drop Shipper" had never been able to acquire  a PSU and that it had finally been cancelled from my order.

So I finally caved and transferred the old PSU over and built the new rig despite my nagging gut instincts. Everything has been working fine so far, so here's hoping.

However I'm wondering if this is a common occurrence that I've managed to skip over the years? Has anyone else ever had this issue?

Well the PSU isn't generic thankfully, it's Coolermaster's original line. Which isn't all that terrible mind you, even if it isn't well known.

And I actually didn't bother with the SSD this time around even if prices have dropped, just shifted over three 1TB HDDs and continued to make due. Most the time I  only have 2 connected if that. I do have a massive pagefile to make up for it, I think it's 64 gigs or something. I basically crank that sucker up as high as I can on the slave HDD.

I do not think you truly understand what pagefile is for or how it works.

Pagefile is used as a storage for least used "pages" of memory onto your HDD, instead of storing everything in RAM.

If you have more drives, it is better to set pagefile at each drive because the pagefile used is the one that responds faster.

People seem to often mistake virtual memory for some sort of cache.

I only do it cause back when The Witcher released in 2007 I had all these issues running it on my PC at the time, and they told me to increase my pagefile and see if it works. So I did and then I never experienced any more of these errors that had been plaguing my machine constantly in multiple games. So now I just do it out of habit, though if it's not helping maybe I'll have to change that. Looking at the full definition it's likely my PC just didn't have enough RAM to run it at the time.

Hard drives are slow.  They are good for cheap bulk storage, but that's about it.  A page file on the hard drive is going to be very slow and is basically memory Windows doesn't need anytime soon (relative to computer speeds).

If you haven't experienced the amazingness that is SSD speed, you are missing out.  Windows will load from a cold boot in less than 1 minute.  It might be less than 30 seconds if your BIOS finishes its stuff fast.  Games will load faster than you have time to read loading screens.  Your life will feel more complete after using a SSD.

A ~128GB SSD is large enough for Windows and a couple games.  If you don't switch between games daily or weekly, it is large enough.  A ~256GB SSD is large enough for several games without having to uninstall.

I think the issue with Tigersdirect is their current scale. They are the most successful brick and mortar computer store now. They also supply several other stores like Walmart. When you are talking about supplying that many carriers, there are going to be delays in inventory control. It's a little amazing they managed to update you that quickly. They also probably have limited supplies of Honeywell based PSUs. Most people buying them don't understand the price verse quality aspect.
If you want something fast, you should always go with newegg in the US. Their setup results in faster delivery every time.
