PS+ now required for ESO

seldinseldin Member UncommonPosts: 196
With the new B2P model the PS+ subscription is now required.  I wonder if this will upset many PS4 owners.  I know that Microsoft was getting flamed for requiring XB Live sub.  To be honest I never saw the problem I don't know anyone who doesn't have a subscription anyways.  SO what do you guys think is it a big deal now to require PS+?

Makes sense. Sony was going to wave the PS+ requirement because of the sub fee but with that gone there is no reason too.

I never saw why it was an issue to start with anyways.  I always felt like Microsoft was getting a bad rap over nothing.  Who is going to own and Xbox or PS4 and only play ESO.  If you own one of the new consoles, the owner will be wanting to do something the requires xbox live or PS+.  It just feels odd that that no seems to care that it is required now.  Oh well I will continue to play on PC.  Don't think I will convert to console version anymore.

Yeah, I saw that coming a mile away. I think I actually said it in another thread. 2015 is supposedly going to mark the start of the online services push for both Sony and Microsoft. We saw Bungie, basically, get skewered for requiring PS+ for group play in Destiny, so it doesn't really surprise me that ESO went the same route. I would say we'll probably see similar pushes from Sony directly for PS2, EQN, and H1Z1 once they come to console.

One less reason to own one of their consoles. As if the lack of power equating to almost no 1080p 60fps titles wasn't enough.

If you don't have PS+ already, you're really missing out. Free games every month and heavy discounts all the time. Is silly not to have it honestly

I believe Zenimax at least quadrupled their console sales for ESO with the move to B2P.

I'd wager that ESO is going to outsell Skyrim

I bet they did.  I cant image that convincing people to pay for a sub for a console game was an uphill battle.  I curious to see the price points for the DLC and how fast they are going to put out DLC.  Have they said if they are still letting PC players pay a small fee to convert to console version?

Yeah, I guess. Then again, I pay the phone company 10 times or more per month for Internet access that is quite, spectacularly horrible. It doesn't mean I'm just going to up and not have Internet. Plus, I get free games each month, so it's worth more than most services I subscribe to (including ESO for that matter).

I do not know if I believe your second point, but I bet you are right on the first one.  My console only friends were very interested in an online elder scrolls right up until I mentioned it might have a sub.

    I wouldn't go that far...

It was a smart move for consoles, however, current players are not blind. This does not actually change anything, ultimately everyone still has to pay the same price for the game. You want that content patch you better be ready to fork over about the same amount you would as you already do for a sub. Maybe the game was already doing okay and they didn't need to go completely F2P, but to me this seems like the same model essentially with a cash shop. Its almost like a Freemium model, but with a buy in.

Has any console game that required a "subscription" (being first or thrid party) ever done well?

Why would it upset PS4 players? They need to have PS+ to play multiplayer games anyway?

I think that FFARR moved over a million copies, didn't they? To console specifically? I'm not sure how many people still subscribe, but I suppose they did at least for a while.

Other than that, no, I can't really think of one :)

Actually, Sony has stated many times that individual companies can decide if they wish to require PS+ or not for their games. They do not get any of the PSN benefits though if they forgo PS+ requirements.

DCUO doesn't require PS+ but they already had all their infrastructure setup. Plus they boast being cross platform with PS3 so might have been somewhat alienating having half your users requiring PS+ and the other half not.

FFXIV does not require PS+, but again, same thing.

I'm guessing Sony must offer enough of an incentive that makes it worthwhile for a developer to worth with the PS+ system or else Zenimax might have decided to bypass it as well.

As I said a few weeks ago when this was raised:

    • last years deal was last years deal when Sony were promoting PS4 sales in a big way. When TESO didn't launch the deal will have lapsed.
And - almost certainly - it will have involved Zenimax paying Sony. As I asked previously: does anyonr believe that Sony provides access to their infrastructure for nothing? So with the move to b2p - no surprise that PS+ is needed..

if they could of had the cpus clocked at 3.2 ghz instead of the 1.6 they could hit that 60 fps much easyer

    From Sony

    "Exceptions

Free-to-play games are exempt from this requirement and can be played online with no PS Plus subscription. Examples of games that fall into this category are: Blacklight Retribution, DC Universe Online, and War Frame."

DCUO is f2p where as ESO is B2P

Having both the PS3 and a PS4 PS+ pays for itself so many times over through the year it's not even a decision.
