i rememebr skyrim has 17 million players that purchased skyrim where did those players go?
elder scroll is the biggest ip. just where did those 17 million skyrim players go?
in fact the total purchases on the elder scrolls ip alone is 30 million worldwide. skyrim sold more then those older elder scrolls titles alone. where did those millions of players go????
Troll elsewhere dude this wasn't because they aren't making money on PC, we already have enough evidence of them doing ok financially. This is because Microsoft refused to waive xbox live fees and now we are all screwed over. ZOS decided not to charge sub +xbox live fees : /
Also, it was 20 million sales, and roughly 17 million of the skyrim sales were from consoles.
Jesus...did you really just blame ESO going B2P on the xbox one???
well another wow killer bits the dust? is there no other mmorpg that can challenge wow subscriptions?
looks like its 2015 and still nothing challenges 10 million active wow subs kind of sad really.
It is funnyu you mention Wow because back in the day without knowing much about Blizzard,i only glanced at their portfolio and found nothing good from them.None the less ,along came EQ2 and short after WOW,i played both and not being a fanbois of SOE nor Blizzard just simply looking for a good game,i EASILY chose EQ2 over WOW.At the time i actually said to myself WOW i can't see anyone playing that game over EQ2 not even close.
I tried a few times to see the fuss, but nope nothing in Wow ,EQ2 is simply better. Now it took several years alter and after hanging out in Twitch and listening to people talk and chatters type,it became apparent that Blizzard followers simply buy ANYTHING and EVERYTHING Blizzard sells no matter how good it is or not.
Now fast forward,i discover this game called Path of Exile i think ok it has the usual faults i don't like in game but it's ok fun and i like the character and gear building idea. The servers go down,so i am bored and think ok how about Diablo,i hear a lot about it.Google a bit and see it set a recorDed for the mOSt sales in the first 24 hrs.I am thinking great i'll give the trial a WHIRL.
I was again like WOW,typical Blizzard fashion low end graphics easier game play. Now i am not saying POE is difficult either but it is a tad tougher than Diablo3 to the point i was actually getting very bored playing D3.Now you can criticize POE for copying Diablo and i was surprised it is an exact copy of the game almost right to the tee,but it took everything Blizzard did and improved on it and i mean everything.
Moral of the story?Blizzard makes millions or Billions selling slightly inferior products al lbecause it simply is a mass marketing giant and has a fanbois following.,Me personally i am not a fanbois of ANY developer,i simply look around for the best possible games to play.I loved Quake but UT99 was better so i moved to that game.I loved FPS's but discovered FFXI,i loved it and played it but quit when they made changes i did not like.I loved UT99 did not like ANY of the renditions afterwards.I "MOVE ON" i do not stick with a game if it is simply not cutting it nor because i spent years and have all these levels and can't let go.
Blizzard is imo popular for all the wrong reasons and makes more money than it should, but whatever it is what it is ,Farmville made millions as well,i will never say that game was any good not by a long stretch.Geesh i remember kids all wanting those scooters because some fashion models and tv stars had them, now nobody cares about them,it is all about popularity and not about reasoning or common sense.
I was pretty much the exact opposite. I did have a negative opinion of EQ before I tried EQ2 because I always thought that AC was the better game. I found WoW to be head and shoulders above EQ2 in fun. EQ2 was boring. Graphics sucked, waiting for groups blew, animations were horrible. I just could not get into EQ2. My friend that was new to MMO's felt the same.
What killed this game is that it was another watered down DAOC clone with WOW like features and no world pvp. The same reason GW2 bores me to tears. If they had made a game for actual edler scrolls fans, maybe it wouldn't have failed so fast.
Originally posted by zzaxB2P is not B2P anymore, its box price + cash shop, which in reality makes it F2P+B2P hybrid, which is worse than just F2P.(but still better than WoW's sub+box+shop three in one payment model)
What other revenue model could they use then? Besides a subscription of course, which has failed. They need to generate income to keep the updates coming and servers running. Box purchases isn't enough to sustain it. At least with a B2P method, you can keep most people from making multiple accounts too, which would otherwise ruin economies worse than they are, or let in all the countless hackers, cheaters, and gold sellers. It's not 100% proof against these people, but it's also not letting the floodgates open for them
B2P is profitable enough to maintain Diablo3 etc, and still was profitable in older games such as GW1, Diablo2, in times when servers weren't actually almost free. I don't see the need for shop in games with box price, other than pure corporation greed.

Not sure where you got the idea that ESO was supposed to be a "WoW killer" - but that was never even a consideration by anyone at ZoS.
I think he is referring to that topic by knotwood where he said ESO will surpass 10 million subs by december 2014. And yes he was pretty serious about it.

I read somewhere that 80% of the sales were console owners. So if that's the case then ESO is likely to do very well with the console release with no sub. From what I understand ESO has a good population already but the console owners will have to pay for playstation plus and xbox gold if they want to play so dropping the sub makes good sense.

I played ESO and GW2 for the DAoC clone thinks and it is way more fun as WoW PvP

By this move alone, they've probably guaranteed themselves at least triple the console sales vs. a sub required release. The vast majority of PS and XBOX owners these days pay the on-line surtax since everything seems to have an online mode these days, That won't stop anyone.
How many stick around after a month remains to be seen but the B2P model is front loaded anyways. Box sales + returns every few months for a one month sub to do the latest DLC or just buying the DLC outright is how they'll make the bulk of their earnings.
If at some point after the console release you want to guess the health of the game, just take a look at the cash shop: if it remains as it currently is with a lot of trivial doo-dahs that will mean that they're happy. If it gets more aggressive with more "services," gambling boxes and all that shit, that'll be a pretty good clue that it's struggling.

They are still there, on Console...right where ESO is headed. This is why they've pushed on the console release with such vigor. If 86% of your market is in somewhere else, you have to adapt or miss out on a significant bump.

Right... Sure.
You must be 3 year old and must have taken a look at the game Blizzard released in your lifetime then. Because if you look at Blizzard's portfolio, you will see games like: Diablo 1, 2 & 3, Starcraft 1 & 2, Warcraft 2 & 3, World of Warcraft, ... And others (Blackthorne, Heartstone, HotS, etc.)
You're not a fanboy you say, but you sure sound like a Blizzard hater - but I think you missed the trend by a few years... It's not really that cool any more to hate on WoW and Blizzard.
I don't even know why I'm wasting my time to reply to your post to be honest. You're just rambling about how "superior" you are because you have double clicked on another game icon than the WoW, PoE or EQ2 icon to play another game. What do you want, a medal?
Nop, WoW didnt do anything to ESO. On the other hand, me and some of my friends yesterday after the news, quit WoW and bought ESO. Better to give our money to a B2P game which offers open world content, than giving a monthly sub in a game that 90% of your playing time is in garrisons etc. For us it was a good deal and imho it will be a good deal for ESO too in the long term.
All Time Favorites: EQ1, WoW, EvE, GW1 Playing Now: WoW, ESO, GW2
It was never intended to be anything that it isnt now becoming. We all saw it in beta last year and how they handled the Imperial additions and the explorer packs. It just seemed like they were pushing to keep it sub based longer than most of us predicted.
Yeah, the whole Imperial thing was definitely them 'testing the waters' back then.
Look, I think by now it should be pretty much assumed that any MMO that launches as P2P will eventually go F2P. It's just a matter of when.
I fully expect that even FFXI will eventually make the switch, when ever SE decides the time is right. It'll have had a very long and successful run as a sub-only MMO. Likewise, Yoshi-P has flat out come out and stated that it would be a mistake to assume that FFXIV will never go F2P; this despite the incessant declarations by many that "it will never go F2P!".
WoW, too, will someday go F2P.
To argue that it will never happen is just wishful thinking.
Honestly, for those who enjoy playing those games, that's a good thing, considering the alternative is watching the playerbase bleed down to nothing, and the game ultimately going offline.
As much as I loathe Cash Shops, and the kinds of design choices that are made in support of them, there is one benefit I see from a MMO going F2P. Thatbenefit is giving the game more life, so those who enjoy it may continue playing, rather than having to see it go offline. I think it's awesome when people get to continue playing something they enjoy, regardless of what I think of the game, or its revenue model.

If you wanna make comparisions, you should talk only about the Subs that WoW have in the western market, so if the 80% of the WoW subs are from asia, that could be like 2 mill of subs in the western market.
By the other side, ESO and WOW doesnt have the same playerbase. So you should post this on Wildstar and not here.

Amazing the opinion stats keep getting higher and higher for amounts in Asia.
It has been stated millions of times why WoW still has large amount of subs and It's not really about its a great game It's has always been.
1: Blizzard allready had millions Warcraft/starcraft fans before WoW released.
2: Blizzard released WoW in the right time just when MMOs starts to get out in the market in big numbers.
3: crapload of gamers first MMO were WoW so you know how it goes, you never forget your first love, you play with friends and family for years in the same guild.
With these 3 points combined ofc WoW still rules in sub numbers.

ESO will sell another 2 or 3 million copies on console which will make it the second most successful MMO of all time. Not bad for a game that is considered a failure.
