He was just doing his job within the constraints in which he was given...  his hands were tied... had this occurred, things would have been different... this guy knew Einstein before Einstein was even a name...

Seems to me, anytime you dig up a developer of a game that was *IT* back in the day and assimilate them into your workflow, aren't you essentially cloning an old goat instead of creating a lamb?

This is just another case of nostalgia blinding you to the light... new ideas need to come from new people not the guy who has been doing this forever.  It's been 8 years and that *IT* hasn't had a second coming yet... you're waiting for a miracle... from an old goat.

Exactly, or as Scambug put it "consumables".

If by 'goat' you mean GOAT (Greatest Of All Time) then yes you've pretty accurately summarized Raph Koster.

His website is great for discussion about all things gaming and related, and more recently he's worked with Disney and several other groups as well as start-ups and consulting. He also does a ton of talks on gaming and game design, all of which are great reading for anyone interested...

I was just about to post his website. These people have no clue. Raph is about building worlds, not hamster wheels. I am really excited that he is on a project like this.

UO changed greatly from design choices made after he left the design team, the same for SWG.  Hard to blame the decline of those games to him.  As to the rest of the games on the list, none are MMO's and not designed for long term existence.

What happens to Crowfall when he abandons that game as well?

    Raph Koster?!?

Well there certainly won't be any of this...

'Sandbox MMO' is a PTSD trigger word for anyone who has the experience to know that anonymous players invariably use a 'sandbox' in the same manner a housecat does.

No game is more fun than the one you can't play, and no game is more boring than one which you've become familiar.

LOL, and this is why games fail before they've even gotten out of beta... and by fail, I mean, the population loudly states their disdain for it.

I ALWAYS end up having to reply to this. Only in the game industry do people think someone's washed up because they switched to doing something else, or went a few years between releases... :)

PS, no claims here that I'll provide the secret ingredient that makes everything epic. :)

Oh well, i will say i hope they can make it, but i really doubt that they will.

The PvP and loot systems in these games are not generally the problem.  The problem is that everything else in the game is lacking.  You can't make a successful MMORPG by creating counterstrike with elves.  The gameplay outside of PvP and land ownership is always severely lacking therefore the game and its world are just not compelling because of it.

What games in the last 8 years have have memorable features that someone 5-10+ years from now is going to remember as being "epic"?

UO, EQ, SWG, DAOC, WoW.... maybe I'm getting old, but I don't know many people that go "Man X from Aion was amazing" or "GW2 has the best Y" "SWTOR changed the game with Z"

Obviously it takes more then 1 person to create a game or even game features, but if I was a game company and he wanted to be a part of the team, I wouldn't ask for a resume. Even if he or others on the team haven't produced any "epic" titles lately, some of them were around when things were still original. Not lets take Skyrim and DAOC's RVR and make ESO or WoW Scifi Edition would be awesome, lets call it Wildstar. Albion is a UO ripoff, Repop is a SWG ripoff, etc. If an author or director I liked all of a sudden started writing/directing after years of being out of the spotlight, I wouldn't go "meh". Maybe it's just me though.

Except that its hard core pvp with full loot. No thanks. I'd rather gouge my eyes out with a spoon.

Just to elucidate you, Raph is a sandbox designer, please tell me about all the sandbox games that have been developed recently...   oh right there has not been any.  There are few indie sandboxes being developed at this moment, none have much backing or financing.   Both UO and SWG were successful and never went the f2p route.  SWP was changed into a themepark and died because of the switch and Raph was long gone by that time.

Rather hard to get a hired on a themepark design with his resume.  So I will classify your disdain as just being misinformed.

+5 for using elucidate in a sentence.

But then some people will point at this game and say see this is why people go out and loot stores or gas stations should this game not have a moral compass?

Because Grand Theft Auto where they go out and loot stores and gas stations has a moral compass? It's a game, nothing more, you're playing to have fun and enjoy yourself in a harmless virtual environment.

+1 for hijacking the topic on your first ever post btw.

yup now i have to go hijack someone elses conversation in real life, because i saw it happen on a forum post.
