The concept of sequels is very familiar to anyone who plays video games, so much so that we basically expect any hit to spawn one, if not more. In the MMO space, the situation is somewhat different because the titles continue to grow and evolve over time. Accordingly, follow-ups aren't nearly as common. That said, it wasn't hard to come up with a handful that would potentially be of significant interest for me.

Aren't SOE launching SWG 2.0 ?
Joking aside, it's possible EA could award SWG 2 to another developer (not Bioware). Dice are developing Star Wars Battlefront (a FPS on their frostbite 2 engine) so anything is possible.
My top 5:
Star Wars Galaxies 2
Star Wars Galaxies 3
Star Wars Galaxies 4
Star Wars Galaxies 5
Star Wars Galaxies 6
Anarchy Online 2!!
The promised GFX update has been delayed for 6-7 years, and wont do anything for the game as it will already be dated when/if it comes.
The only one I can think of, off the top of my head, is City of Heroes, but I guess 2 or 3 different indie studios are working on spiritual successors. I hope one has the random layout "dungeon" (instance?) creator aspect. It really stepped up replayability.
edit: hmm, after investigating, it seems City of Titans will not be doing random map generation, because the back-end development would require too much testing? That's disappointing.

Here's hoping Crowfall brings us a Shadowbane/SWG type sequel. Good list BTW.
A true Guild Wars sequel. With 8 skills, builds and all that stuff. I like GW2 but I miss GW.
Atlantica Online. Really cool game.
A true sequel to Lineage 2 without all this cute stuff they started to add few years ago.

Although I can understand the sentiment of the article and the spirit in which it was written, the ideals of sequels to MMORPGs is terrible concept. MMORPGs are suppose to keep developing over time and add new content. The minute a sequel is planned the previous one is done for and it just becomes a money grind for companies and you end up with junk like movie studios put out most of the time when it comes to sequels. Meh, just bad phrasing is all I suppose.
I think it more of a reboot of old MMORPGs, with updates engines and content. Overall the list looked pretty good except WOW being on it. I don't play WoW but I like the fact its still around, as it gives the WoW players someplace to be so there is a higher (albeit slight chance) that now every new game is like WoW.

A StarCraft MMO would be a better idea than a WoW II. Personally, I'd like to see a definitive successor to EverQuest, not all of the quasi ones we've been given over the years. EQNext doesn't even remotely fit the bill either.
Ultimately, I'd much prefer companies design games that can be upgraded from the ground up, so they remain fresh, on the edge of new technologies and truly transformative over the years.
We're discussing this in another thread.

No Asheron's Call? Is this list a joke? You want to see another rehashed version of a MMO that has been rehashed 90 times since it was released but not a sequel to a very underrated but highly unique MMO? Funny.
Also, before you say Asheron's Call already had a sequel. That was nothing more than a game Microsoft forced Turbine to make and interfered with to the point of destroying the game. It had very little in common with Asheron's Call. It was also made while Asheron's Call was still very popular.
The funny thing is my list is sort of weird lol.
I actually want to seethe REAL sequels i THOUGHT i was going to see.
Sooooo
1 Where is the REAL sequel to FFXI?

4 I would like to see a sequel to Ultima Online
5 Then last but not least a real effort into Tabula Rasa
