Incredible Downloads?

Electro057Electro057 Member UncommonPosts: 683

Is it just me or are the amounts required for a user to download these days becoming increasing excessive? A few years ago I tried out TERA and it was some 40gigs or something to download, and though I don't have any issues with storage that's an incredible amount. Not everyone has light-speed internet, I'm living in SouthWestern Ontario and my best service available is Wireless Broadband that usually nets like 130kb/s. And that's not considering for nearly 200$ I only have 50 gigs of monthly bandwith...

I'm sitting here downloading 29 gigs for Elder Scrolls Online, and it's not only going to take weeks but will also put me over my cap. Does anyone else find these numbers ridiculous these days? I know in the past I had to sport two Dial-up connections hooked up ISDN method to play Everquest, but that wasn't as frustrating as this.

I understand why it's necessary for maps, models, and textures but at the same time I think it's absurd.

Wow! I feel sorry for you mate. I'm over in the western Montana and have a cable/broadband connection that can get up to 1 mb/s plus a little more depending on the patcher and all this without a bandwith cap. And to your point yes, it seems like the numbers are just growing.

Part of it is Canada's stubborn population that is technologically illiterate, until a few years ago dial up was the only service offered in my area because "It's too rural to support the maintenance or costs of laying infrastructure."

But I feel that these numbers weren't so daunting or impossible to overcome in the past.

Nope ... my AT&T u-verse goes up to 50Mb/s .. i usually get roughly 5-6MB per second .. that is without my wife & kids watching netflix at the same time.

A 40G download is a little over 2 hours .. bad .. but not that bad. And there is no limit on download here.

Jealous! And I hear people complaining about AT&T and Comcast all the time, this is the first time I've heard such good things about it.

Haha i feel for you OP,i also live in Southern Ontario,we have no competition in the market that is why they get away with murder.Every region has only one choice of each,Cable or telephone lines and they make sure to not cut throat too much to keep the costs high.We get big time ripped off here,i pay 100 bucks a month for 160 gb's space which i had to do because of Apple TV was eating up far too much with the HD movies being downloaded.

What many GOOD ore smart devs have been doing is have downloading in the background while playing the game.So all you need is a bare minimum to actually get started,i think that is the smartest idea to date.

Zenimax is brand new to the MMO field and sort of the reason i hesitate to touch their game. This is  because every single developer i felt did not understand the difference from MMO>Single player gaming has not understood it,so my gut has always been right and i feel that way about this game.

I feel for ya! That is terrible.

And the size of MMOs has blossomed out of hand, in my opinion. 40GB is 10 (TEN) DVDs (4.7GB each) full of info. Even on Blu-Ray, that is 2 x 25GB discs. That is outrageous, especially for people who have limited bandwidth plans for their internet.

But... players no longer want discs. It is unfortunate.

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.

I thought Ontario was the center of the Canadian universe..or is that just TO and hockey? image

Here in the greater Vancouver area we have good competition between Rogers Cable internet and TV and Telus Optik TV over IP and high speed.

I use Optik and can watch one channel, record up to 2 others simultaneously to the PVR and still get 6 MB/s DLs... and that's not even the fastest plan.

But we pay a premium on housing. You've got limited internet in rural Ontario but I bet your housing costs are dirt cheap.

I pretty sure you can still buy the discs for most games.  I see the Elder Scrolls Online for PC at Amazon.com.  I could be wrong though.
