looking for a good turn based PC RPG

MMOman101MMOman101 Member UncommonPosts: 1,787

I really like games like:

Avernum

Shadowrun Reutrns

Might & Magic X

Knights of pen and paper +1

Jagged Alliance

X-com

Squad turn based games where there is depth of character/group customization.  I have been playing through the Avernum series, but they are substantially similar.  Does anyone know of any other good games like these.  I have not listed all that I have played.

Thanks in advance.

How is the deep is the character customization?

I have been playing blackguards 2 and well......um.  It has not grabbed me.

I have not heard of Massive Chalice.  Do you think Original Sin is the best of the lot you listed?

There's no deep character customization, but Valkyria Chronicles is atm -50% on Steam. You might like it.

EDIT: Read a review or other description of the game before purchasing though. It's not quite what you're asking, I'm just suggesting it because it has some of the same elements and it's cheap. /EDIT

Played that one and it was very good.

Added to wish list.  I don't purchase games until they have been out for a bit.

    Divinity original sin.

Grimrock 1 + 2? Not really turn based, but it is somewhat similar. First person view, controlling 4 character via UI.

So just about everyone is saying Divinity Original Sin.

I played Grimrock 1.  Fun game.  The game was not very well balanced.  Did they resolve that in the second one?

I have been looking at banner saga.  Some of the steam reviews kind of scared me off.

Actually, Dragonfall is a whole new campaign in that game.  You don't even see the same characters.  It takes place in Berlin (whole different city) and a whole new story.  Dragonfall is also vastly superior to the original Shadownrun returns.

Have not played it myself, but from some vids I saw, I dont think it is very well balanced. Unless you go with certain options you select at new game screen.

Save crystals only usable once etc.

Just started this http://www.darkestdungeon.com/. I have only got about 3 hours into it and have to say it's very challenging. $19.99 on Steam.

Death is nothing to us, since when we are, Death has not come, and when death has come, we are not.

Shadowrun: Dragonfall, like someone said, its not an updated version of SR:Returns. It is a standalone campaign in the same way Guild Wars 1 did its standalone campaigns separate from the base game so it is basically a second full game. Plus it is of course a much improved game compared to Returns.

Divinity Original Sin is also a must play.

I heard Banner Saga (the single player game) is pretty good, but i havent played it. That one is on my to-buy list too.

I picked up Divinity Original Sin last night and let the download run.  I will try it out when I get some time.

Thanks.  Any other thoughts would be fine too.

Well, since you already got it, I don't want to discourage you from trying to enjoy your purchase.  But... frankly, I thought Divinity Original Sin was overrated big-time.  I put in nearly 50 hours into that game, and had no idea what the main story was about.  It was just a huge exercise in my patience - more so than I care to practice.  But... lots of other people loved it, and Gamespot gave it PC Game of the year.  So what do I know?

Dragonfall is indeed worth the price.  Shadowrun Returns was a pretty decent campaign, but it left a lot to be desired.  Dragonfall actually feels like a real RPG: great characters, really great story, even better narrative, fantastic environments that look really great with the Director's Cut improvements, really really tough choices to make in the story.  The combat is roughly the same, though it has been polished up a bit.  It's probably my number one game of last year - and I'm not blowing smoke.  It really reminds me of the old-school great CRPG's from the day - like Fallout, really.  It's not quite on that level, but you can tell that's what they're shooting for.  I think their third major release will definitely hit that mark.  I can't recommend it enough.

Recently I bought Invisible Inc.  It's more of a Rogue-like than an RPG, though.  But there IS a story in the sense that the new XCOM game has a story.  It's currently in a buy-in Beta, but what I have played of it so far, it's already really, really slick.  I stopped playing it, though, because I was satisfied with the development, and will wait for the game to officially launch to start playing once again.  The only thing it's lacking is a base-building mechanic.  If it had that... it would be the best thing since the original XCOM.  No kidding - tough decisions, hard AI, procedurally generated maps... it's all good.

I was also really impressed with Dungeon of the Endless.  It's also a Rogue-Like and is kind of a turn-based thing.  It's hard to explain.  You should watch some game play footage.  All I can really tell you is that if you like the general way things are set-up in the video... the game is a lot more fun to play than it is to watch someone play.  And like any Rogue-like, it has tremendous replay value.

Someone mentioned Xenonaughts earlier.  I agree with that choice if you're looking for something exactly like XCOM... and I mean EXACTLY like XCOM.  It's just a little too similar for my tastes, though.  Especially when you could just get the free download of Open XCOM.  Still, I mean... it's a great choice.  I'm just funny about games that blatantly copy another game without really innovating much.  The game just feels really dull to me.  It's XCOM without the "character" that made it so unique and fun - you know?

Pillars of Destiny is supposed to come out... sometime.  It isn't exactly turn based, I don't think.  But it's kind of in that same niche.  It's basically supposed to be a really slick updated Baldur's Gate if that's anything like what you're looking for.

Of course, there's always the Fallout Series and the rest of the XCOM games.  Terror from the Deep is a great addition to XCOM (it's really hard.)  I know that XCOM Apocalypse has a solid following, but it's so different from the original, I couldn't get into it.

    Hope this helps.
