I have been following this game on steam for a while. I have watched all the videos I could find on youtube and read through the forums.
Has anyone been playing this yet?
The graphics and visuals look great, the features are interesting, however, there is no real way to get an idea of the game play without talking to someone playing it.

Looks cool, it peaks my interest and I would like to try this but it's on STEAM. what a shame.
Many people here do play STEAM managed games and perhaps some of them have tried this one. Be interesting to hear people's opinions on it.

I'm playing The Forest right now and it's pretty decent. I got goose bumps the first time I was gathering and looked up through the trees, and saw a humanoid watching me.
Death is nothing to us, since when we are, Death has not come, and when death has come, we are not.
Playing it on pve server. The amount of gear you drop when you die is considerable. Mobs drop blueprints. You collect mats, build bases and upgrade your gear. There is a limited amount of character skills that can be developed, basic quests are not yet present, though there are generic npcs in the world. The game seems to lack some direction atm. While you can build a base there isn't a great deal of point in doing so, at least on pve server.
You can build a weird kind of bike and jetpack with the appropriate blueprints, the world is pretty and the game receives updates fairly frequently. At the moment there does not appear to be enough to do to keep playing in the medium or long term. I wouldn't expect to be entertained for more than a few dozen hours at least on pve servers. Game has potential though.
I am curious how grav compares to eden star. Eden star seems conceptually very similar but with better graphics and extreme system requirements that are out of my reach at present.
You may have just saved me $19.99! I was seriously just about to buy it and swung by here one more time to check on more responses and read yours. I do think I will wait and see what happens with this and further development. It is in my wishlist now though! Thanx

To me, Survival appears to mean "spend 99% of your time running around, collecting garbage from containers". Which isn't a fun game.
Slapping a "Survival" label on a giant mostly-empty world that you've scattered a tiny spread of items through just seems like a cruel joke being played on players (who strangely seem grateful it's being played on them.) Any other genre and you'd be forced to provide compelling, interesting gameplay, but call it "Survival" and you don't have to worry about providing that.
Doesn't mean I've never enjoyed games which are somewhat survival-like. But things like Don't Starve or Terraria provide more gameplay variation and let you spend a significant part of your time doing things, and/or even the act of traversing terrain is at least a little game-like (choosing where to mine in Terraria).
Grav didn't interest me because the trailer didn't show anything interesting (but did show buggy low-quality dance moves). The phrase "action survival" definitely sounds more engaging and appealing than typical survival games, but it still seems like an excuse for wasting a lot of time doing nothing.

Depending on the game, there is more to most of them than just crafting and building using "a tiny spread of items". Most of them the environment is trying to kill you as well, and most have a pretty good AI for wildlife and enemies. A lot of them are very sandboxy and it seems that is a huge benefit. Besides, the main idea of any game is survival in one way or another. It's not my favorite genre but it is fun now and again.

The game looks great, but with little to no direction, quests, or that dying need to survive, I too think it might be a bit early to jump in.
I love the sandbox crafting free form game play and with scifi thought for sure this was going to be a game for me and it still may be, I guess time will tell.

Anyone know if they will eventually be adding NPC towns, then quests and such or is this game 100% player driven?
There are quest givers in the environment but they are generic and don't give quests.
I must say patch 10 addresses some of the bigger issues I had with pvp servers. The death penalties were brutal, you could be set back tens of hours trying to recoup/recover from death. Dropping materials rather than equipment seems a fair compromise.
Teleporters will help getting around alot, minimap apparently. New planets should mean being able to progress past level 30, I have blueprints for items 30+ but very difficult to acquire materials for them. Downloading patch atm will write impressions later.
